Jon Hassler, whose novel, Staggerford, he adapted, is one (out of three) of his artistic "heroes". The opportunity to adapt it, one of his favorite novels, came when a mutual friend (he hadn't yet met Hassler) popped the question to Hassler without his knowledge.
