The UK’s Health and Safety Executive is prosecuting the Star Wars: The Force Awakens production company Foodles Production (UK) Limited – a subsidiary of Disney and Lucasfilm – over the on-set accident that left Harrison Ford with a broken leg.

The BBC reports that the Hse has brought four criminal charges against the company, having found sufficient evidence during an investigation into the incident to charge the company with alleged health and safety breaches. The case will be heard at High Wycombe Magistrates Court on May 12th.

The accident occurred in June 2014, with a hydraulic door on the Millennium Falcon falling on the actor, fracturing his leg and leading to production being suspended for two weeks. Ford then returned to work in the August following his recovery.

Watch: 9 Oscar-Nominated Screenwriters on How They Got Their Start, Their Writing Process, and Much More

9 February 2016 2:13 PM, PST | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Representing eight of the 10 films nominated for Original and Adapted Screenplay at this year's Oscars, there's a very good chance that at least one of the nine screenwriters on the Santa Barbara International Film Festival's "It Starts with the Script" panel will be on stage at the Dolby Theatre later this month.  This is always my favorite panel of the year, where we get to hear from the year’s most lauded and gifted screenwriters. This year's was the biggest group ever: Writer-directors Pete Docter ("Inside Out") and Charlie Kaufman ("Anomalisa") are both nominated for Best Animated Feature. Novelist-turned-screenwriter Alex Garland ("28 Days Later," "Sunshine") made his directing debut on sci-fi breakout "Ex Machina," starring Domhnall GleesonAlicia Vikander and Oscar Isaac. Irish-born novelist Emma Donaghue decided to adapt her bestseller "Room" and then find a director; »

Star Wars: The Force Awakens becomes only the third movie ever to gross $2 billion worldwide

7 February 2016 9:58 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Having become the first release ever to gross $900 million at the North American box office this past Friday, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has now achieved another milestone, with the movie crossing the $2 billion mark worldwide today.

It’s only the third time ever that a film has reached the landmark figure, with James Cameron achieving the feat twice with Titanic ($2.187 billion) and Avatar ($2.788 billion). However, it is unlikely that The Force Awakens will have enough left in the tank to knock either of those from their current positions and will surely have to settle for third in the list of the highest-grossing movies of all time, leaving Cameron as the king of the box office world.

It had already taken the crown of the highest-grossing North American release of all time back in early January, and now after fifty days on screens Disney and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the first film in history to pass $900 million at the domestic box office.

“The film’s achievements are truly astounding, and it’s our great honor to relaunch this cinematic galaxy not only for all the devoted decades-long fans but for a new generation who will keep the Star Wars legacy alive for many years to come,” states Disney’s Alan Horn.

Worldwide, The Force Awakens is expected to become only the third film ever to reach $2 billion this Saturday after James Cameron’s Titanic ($2.18 billion) and Avatar ($2.78 billion).

‘The Revenant’ Review

Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter, Forrest Goodluck, Paul Anderson, Kristoffer Joner, Joshua Burge, Duane Howard, Melaw Nakehk’o, Fabrice Adde, Arthur RedCloud | Written by Alejandro González Iñárritu, Mark L. Smith | Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu

The Revenant a simple story of revenge, but the arduous journey from aggrieved to exacting that revenge is anything but simple. This is Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s latest film and is a huge departure from last years eccentric, superhero movie Birdman. We join the history of how the USA was colonised at the point where white settlers from Europe have disrupted and destroyed all prior notions of civilisation to such a degree that Native Americans are reduced to the same killer tactics to survive and thrive as their recent arrivals. These are hard, frontiersmen times. Snow is on the mountainous, untamed ground and peace and tranquility is nothing but a fantasy. »

Movie Review – The Revenant (2016)

24 January 2016 6:45 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The Revenant, 2016.

Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu.

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Will Poulter, Domhnall Gleeson, Paul Anderson, Lukas Haas, Brendan Fletcher, Forrest Goodluck, and Grace Dove.

Synopsis:

In the 1820s, a frontiersman, Hugh Glass, sets out on a path of vengeance against those who left him for dead after a bear mauling.

You would assume that with a production history of being passed between numerous directors, taking over a decade to complete, that The Revenant might take on a miss-cut mosaic of scenes moulded to separate styles, with the thumbprint of each director clearly detectable in every segmented scene. However, The Revenant is anything but. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s film is a breath-taking and intimate experience. Its tactile approach to cinematography detains its audience forcing them to share in every experience its characters enter into. The film’s eclectic raw qualities keep the narrative consistently captivating and solely unique. »

Is this not the most brilliant screenplay from 2015?  Alex Garland assembles a perfect fable about robots, artificial intelligence and the hubris of a software genius who thinks he's a God. Garland's direction is tops as well, as is the acting of Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson and Alicia Vikander. When did I realize I was seeing a killer diller Sci-fi winner? He had me as soon as I saw that house. This is the movie with the sexy see-through robot. The question not asked but that every male viewer is thinking is, 'could I have sex with that?' RSVP to the (Free) Saoirse Ronan Retrospective

One of the freshest talents to emerge out of Hollywood in recent years is Saoirse Ronan. Ronan is only less than a decade into her film career, but her résumé reads like a who’s who list of Hollywood A-list filmmakers and co-stars. Ronan’s career continues to burn bright after receiving a second Academy Award nomination at 21 for “Brooklyn.” Ronan stars as Eilis, a young Irish woman who immigrates to Brooklyn in the 1950s in search of a better future. She almost immediately falls into a romance with a young man named Tony (Emory Cohen). However, Eilis’ past eventually catches up with her and she must return home to Ireland. Torn between two worlds, Ronan beautifully conveys Eilis’ internal conflict and her realization of what “home” actually means to her. “Brooklyn” earned two additional Oscar nominations for picture (producers Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey) and adapted screenplay (writer Nick Hornby »

44-Minute Documentary For The Revenant Finds Beauty In The Wilderness

Curious as to how Emmanuel Lubezki and director Alejandro G. Iñárritu captured Hugh Glass’ harrowing journey in The Revenant? Today’s 44-minute documentary ought to answer your questions.

Thrusting the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Will Poulter, Domhnall Gleeson and one pissed off grizzly onto the bitter-cold American frontier, Iñárritu’s Oscar hopeful was drew praise for its gripping story and naturalistic style. It was a production fraught with environmental problems, too, and in the lead up to the film’s release DiCaprio et al. conceded that temperamental weather was the biggest obstacle for the cast and crew to overcome, which would often lead to reshooting at a very specific time of day.

Couple this with Iñárritu’s commitment to filming in chronological order and you have what should have been a recipe for disaster that ultimately produced a cinematic car crash, but low and behold, the filmmaker’s »
