'Star Wars 7': Tech Secrets Behind Bb-8 Droid Revealed!

22 hours ago | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Star Wars Celebration kicked off yesterday with the first panel, where several actors from Star Wars: The Force Awakens appeared on stage, and fans finally got to see the first full-length trailer. Perhaps the most memorable moment of the whole panel, though, was the reveal that lovable ball droid Bb-8 is an actual, practical robot. When Bb-8 was introduced in the first teaser trailer last year, many fans thought and/or assumed that the droid was a digital creation, since it is literally a rolling ball with a head somehow attached. But many fans looked on in wonder as Bb-8 literally rolled out onto the stage. How is this possible? Forbes reveals the company that developed the technology behind Bb-8 is called Sphero, a Boulder, Colorado start-up company.

Producer Kathleen Kennedy teased during the panel that Disney CEO Bob Iger discovered the company himself. The company describes itself as a, »

'Star Wars 7' Sith Villain Kylo Ren Gets 2 More Posters

17 April 2015 3:21 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Are you starting to feel Star Wars fatigue yet? Or are you getting more and more excited with each new reveal coming out of Star Wars Celebration? Up next, we have two more posters featuring new Sith villain Kylo Ren and his now legendary lightsaber with a franchise-first cross guard that has earned its place in Star Wars lore even before Star Wars: The Force Awakens has had a chance to debut on the big screen. These arrive following three posters from yesterday which revealed Kylo's mask and his army of stormtroopers.

It has not yet been revealed who is hiding under Kylo Ren's mask, or which actor is playing this unique Sith villain said to be as menacing as Darth Vader, but much more deadly. Many suspect that this is the character Adam Driver is playing, while some suspect that he is part of the Skywalker family bloodline. »

'Star Wars: Battlefront' Will Lead Into 'Force Awakens'

17 April 2015 11:28 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Yesterday, during the Star Wars: The Force Awakens live panel, director J.J. Abrams revealed that the desert planet we see in the new and original teaser trailer is not Tatooine. It is, in fact, a completely different desert planet named Jakku. And we'll get to learn more about this planet, and one epic, defining battle that happened there, with the upcoming Star Wars: Battlefront video game, which will hit stores in time for Christmas to coincide with the release of the new franchise sequel.

Yesterday's Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer opened with an awe-inspiring tracking shot across Jakku, which showcased a crashed Imperial Star Destroyer. How did this happen? Dice and Lucasfilm plan to take players into the 'Battle of Jakku' firsthand with a special addition to Star Wars: Battlefront. It will serve as a direct prequel to Star Wars 7, and offers backstory on some »

It was a roar heard around the galaxy.

The latest trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was unveiled on Thursday with fans watching it on YouTube and Facebook more than 25 million times. The buzz on it is insane!

Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaacs as well as veterans of the original saga Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Anthony Daniels, and Peter Mayhew joined director J.J. Now that the Force is back, it left millions of fans dissecting every inch of the new trailer. What’s with the new weapons? Who was Mark Hamill referring to? 'Star Wars 7' Flametrooper & Snowtrooper Revealed at Celebration Exhibit

17 April 2015 8:33 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Empire has now transformed into the First Order, and the Rebellion is now known as The Resistance. And with these changes comes new costumes for both the X-Wing Pilots and the Stormtroopers. Which, let's all agree, greatly helps the sales of Star Wars action figures and other related merchandise. With Star Wars Celebration going on this weekend, the Anaheim convention center has built a loving shrine to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, where they are showing off costumes and props from the new movie. We've collected some of the fan photos, which reveal two new stormtroopers. The new and improved Snowtrooper. And the never-before-seen Flametrooper, who was first introduced on a poster released yesterday.

Also included in this epic exhibit is Sith villain Kylo Ren's lightsaber hilt. We get to see both Rey and Finn's full costumes. The new droid Bb- »

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Will Introduce The Empire As “New Order,” Rebel Alliance Now The Resistance

17 April 2015 8:13 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

From the off-set, the inspired second trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awaken made it crystal clear that J.J. Abrams’ upcoming sequel would take place years after the events of Return of the Jedi. Heck, even the haunting opening shot included a downed Star Destroyer, crashed on Rey’s arid home planet of Jakku, hinting that the legacy of the old trilogy will underpin Abrams’ rebooted universe as opposed to influencing it directly.

As a matter of fact, it now appears that the totalitarian Empire will be referred to as the New Order, while the Rebel Alliance has been rebranded as simply The Resistance. To reflect this change, each faction has witnessed their respective logos be tweaked, too, with the most prominent being the New Order’s blood-red banner glimpsed from yesterday’s trailer. It’s a neat, wholly welcome change, and one that marks a new era for »

Beyond the opening panel, there was at least one other interview with Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams at yesterday's Star Wars celebration in Anaheim. Guillermo, from the Jimmy Kimmel show, donned some rags from a galaxy far, far away in order to speak with Abrams and ask him the truly pressing questions. If you're still riding the buzz from that amazing trailer, I think you'll find the time to enjoy Guillermo asking Abrams essential stuff like, "is Chewbacca a bear or a dog?" Also, J.J. reveals whether or not he has been probed and tastes some space juice (aka Patron). Watch the interview below. Ex Machina Review

17 April 2015 5:40 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

A B-movie that tried to be something better but stayed a B-movie. Writer/director Alex Garland’s sci-fi flick is the latest in a long line of slipshod Hollywood treatments of artificial intelligence. This tale starts with a pseudo “imitation game” in which Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) has been chosen to determine which is the real person and which is the computer armed with AI. To our surprise, Caleb is confronted with neither a computer nor a person, but an automaton programmed to act like a human and equipped with the computer generated human face, and body, of a very beautiful woman. Smart, stylish ‘Ex Machina’ brilliantly mixes emotions and technology

16 April 2015 8:36 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Ex Machina

Written & Directed by Alex Garland

UK, 2015

Ex Machina is a superior techno-thriller that asks a lot more questions than it’s willing to answer. Filmmakers have long exploited the dangers of artificial intelligence, but few have the courage to examine the hubris behind Man’s technological self-destruction. Alex Garland’s assured directorial debut showcases a patient filmmaker adept at world building. Like all good sci-fi films with big ideas and bold visuals, you’ll be thinking about Ex Machina long after you leave the theater.

The opening scenes of Ex Machina are like a tutorial in non-verbal storytelling. Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), a young, somewhat naive computer coder, wins a contest to spend one week with his mysterious and brilliant boss, Nathan (Oscar Isaac). A helicopter drops Caleb into a desolate field, where the pilot advises him to, “Follow the river” to find Nathan’s secluded estate. It’s »

'Star Wars 7' Teaser Poster & Behind-the-Scenes Photos

16 April 2015 6:24 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Last week, we reported that Disney and LucasFilm will debut the first teaser poster for Star Wars: The Force Awakens during the opening kickoff event of Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California, which runs from April 16 through April 19. Director J.J. Abrams and producer Kathleen Kennedy were on hand to present this one-sheet to the fans assembled at the Anaheim Convention Center, and now everyone else can check out the poster for themselves. The director and producer also debuted the first trailer for this highly-anticipated movie, which will be attached to prints of Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1.

Way back in May 2014, we reported that poster artist Drew Struzan, who created the posters for all six Star Wars movies, was coming out of retirement to craft the one-sheet for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That report was never confirmed, though, and this latest poster is just the logo that we've seen before. »
