ThunderCats: roaring back into cinemas?

Footage leaked online from an aborted film has reinvigorated demand to see the 80s cartoon at feature length. Is it worth it?

Back in 2007, when the runaway box-office success of Transformers taught Hollywood that there was big money to be made in the forceful molestation of cherished childhood memories, it seemed as if no 80s cartoon would be safe from its grubby advances. There would soon be a Voltron movie, we were told. And a ThunderCats movie. And a GI Joe movie. And a He-Man movie directed by John Woo.

Of these, only 2009's little-loved GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra ever saw the light of day. Both Voltron and the (now Woo-less) He-Man film remain stuck in development hell, while ThunderCats had been permanently put out to pasture. Leaked 'ThunderCats' Movie Footage: CGI Lion-o Vs. Slithe!

14 February 2011 12:31 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Way back in July 2009, almost a full year before the new "ThunderCats" animated series was announced, some concept art hit the 'net from the scrapped "ThunderCats" movie that was originally intended to bring the characters form the beloved 1980s series to the big screen. Now, some test footage from the "ThunderCats" movie has also found its way online — and it offers our first, in-action look at the movie that might've been.

Posted over at Flixist, the footage shows Lion-o practicing with the Sword of Omens, only to be interrupted by the reptilian villain Slithe (who also sports a new look for the CGI film) and dropping the sword. After brawling a bit on the side of a canyon, Lion-o recovers the Sword of Omens and issues the familiar "Thunder... Thunder... ThunderCats... Ho!" call.

The film's new "ThunderCats" logo is then revealed, and when the action resumes, Lion-o is crouching over Slithe's unconscious body. »

Thundercats CGI Test Footage Video

12 February 2011 11:13 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Warner Bros. is set to premiere a new Thundercats series on the Cartoon Network later this year. But before that came to fruition, a Thundercats CGI adaptation, based on the popular animated series that debuted in 1985, was set to hit theaters in 2012. And it has since been shelved. Today, CGI test footage from this planned big screen outing has leaked online.

The following footage hasn't been classified as official just yet, but the action on display falls in line with concept art that was leaked more than two years ago, when Jerry O'Flaherty was set to direct the project. You can check out the test footage below and decide for yourself.
