Chris Weitz, the director behind The Golden Compass, About A Boy & producer of the American Pie movies is officially on board to helm the Twilight sequel New Moon, replacing Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke. Weitz issued the following letter to reassure fans that the sequel is in good hands:
Meanwhile, author Stephenie Meyer endorsed Weitz in this letter on her website:
December 13, 2008
There's been a lot of worry and speculation on the boards lately, and I want to let you know what's going on.
First of all, like you, I'm sad that Catherine is not continuing on with us for New Moon. I'm going to miss her, not just as a brilliant director, but also as a friend. She has such a distinct, authentic voice that did amazing things for Twilight. I'm looking forward to every movie she does in the future.
And she didn't leave us empty handed. »

Although we haven't been actively following the project, M. Night Shyamalan's big screen adaptation of the Nickelodeon cartoon series Avatar: The Last Airbender has been gaining buzz due to its enormous fanbase. Entertainment Weekly claims to finally have the casting details for the film, which includes a handful of young and fairly unknown actors. But as always, we know that Shyamalan claims to want to find the right actors, not big names, and thus he seems to have chosen a few that fit the roles. Paramount is still developing this feature as a big franchise and is hoping to have the first of three films out in July of 2010. After an open casting call in Texas, Shyamalan discovered karate star Noah Ringer and offered him the lead role as Aang. Twilight star Jackson Rathbone will play Aang's friend Sokka, while Nicola Peltz will star as his sister Katara. And »

M. Night Shyamalan has just locked up the cast for his next movie, The Last Airbender. No his actors will not be plants, or in the case of Mark Wahlberg blocks of wood. The Last Airbender is based on an Emmy winning anime series which airs on Nickelodeon, about a world full of people who use martial arts and manipulate the elements. Most of you have never heard of it, and according to EW you'll also have never heard of his cast. He's filling the movie mostly with unknowns. The movie's star, Aang, will be played by a karate star named Noah Ringer whom Night found at an open casting call in Texas. Hot of the heels of the announcement that shooting on the Twilight sequel New Moon could begin as early as March of 2009, Variety reports that director Catherine Hardwicke will not be returning to helm the second feature. The following Variety piece explains all the details:
"In an unusual move after the successful launch of a franchise that has already generated $138.6 million, the upstart distrib (Summit Entertainment) is not bringing director Catherine Hardwicke back to direct New Moon. Summit and Hardwicke cite Summit's wish to rush the movie into production as one reason for their split. Summit wants to release the picture, which will demand substantial CGI work, by the end of 2009 or the start of 2010. A former production designer, Hardwicke wanted more prep time."
