Homeland vs. Scandal: Battle of the Political Soaps

18 December 2012 1:30 PM, PST | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

One show's a high-end drama with the Emmys to prove it. One's a soapy underdog just starting to gain traction. They're both political stories with assassination attempts and scheming politicos, highly trained snipers, and more pantsuits than any sane person would know what to do with. Homeland and Scandal are cut from the same cloth, and that cloth is a soap-soaked American flag. There's room in our hearts for both, certainly, but how do they stack up head-to-head?Crying Homeland has the obvious advantage of having Claire Danes and her cry face, but Scandal casts a wider cry-net: Olivia (Kerry Washington) cries, but so do her sidekicks Abby (Darby Stanchfield) and Quinn (Katie Lowes). We've seen Jessica Brody (Morena Baccarin) get choked up, but it's not the open sobbing we've come to expect from the fixers at Scandal's Pope and Associates. Winner: Scandal. Homeland almost never makes the audience cry, »

'Scandal': 5 theories that could explain why [spoiler] shot Fitz

7 December 2012 3:55 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Note: If you haven't yet watched Thursday's (Dec. 6) episode of "Scandal," you'll probably not want to read the following post. Spoilers -- big ones -- ahead.

"Scandal" followed up last week's shocking ending -- the shooting of President Grant (Tony Goldwyn) -- with an episode Thursday that ended with almost as big a jaw-dropper.

By every appearance, the shooter is none other than Huck (Guillermo Diaz), Olivia's (Kerry Washington) close friend and associate. He's also, it should be noted, the guy who's done a lot of the dirty work in covering up the Cytron voter fraud that gave Fitz the White House in the first place.

Still, even though we know Huck is a trained killer who often liked his old job very much, "Scandal" has taken great pains to show his efforts to leave that world behind. So why would he have shot the president? If a definitive answer is coming, »

Scandal Scoop: Was the Election Rigged?

15 November 2012 6:23 AM, PST | TVGuide - Breaking News | See recent TVGuide - Breaking News news »

Do not miss the next three episodes of Scandal.

That's the message executive producer Betsy Beers conveyed following the reveal that Scandal's secret cabal of five — Olivia (Kerry Washington), Cyrus (Jeff Perry), Mellie (Belamy Young), Verna (Debra Mooney) and Hollis (Gregg Henry) — may have rigged the election that put Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) into power. The explosion that nearly got Quinn Perkins (Katie Lowes) the death penalty? A way to cover it all up... apparently. Below, Beers dishes on what's in store for the five and how they'll handle their David Rosen (Joshua Malina) and Abby Whelan (Darby Stanchfield) problem. Get the scoop:

'Scandal' picked up for a full second season on ABC

29 October 2012 6:47 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

"Scandal" will get more time to delve into the mysteries and deceptions of Olivia Pope and the world of political hijinks in which she works..

ABC on Monday (Oct. 29) picked up a full second season of the drama, which has been a steady if not spectacular performer for the network on Thursday nights. Its second-season order had initially been for 13 episodes -- a fairly common practice for shows that have short runs in their first seasons ("Scandal" aired only seven episodes last spring).

Through its first four airings this fall, "Scandal" is averaging 7.65 million viewers and a 2.4 rating among adults 18-49 (including DVR use for the first two episodes). Those numbers are pretty close to its average for last season (8.7 million viewers, 2.6 in 18-49).

"Scandal" is currently unraveling the story behind why Olivia (Kerry Washington) gave Quinn (Katie Lowes) a new identity -- an arc that, presumably, was designed for the initial 13-episode order. »

'Scandal': Katie Lowes on Quinn/Abby tension. Plus, this week's behind the scenes video!

25 October 2012 1:18 PM, PDT | EW - Inside TV | See recent - Inside TV news »

After several episodes (and some might say an entire first season) of tensions between Abby and Quinn, last week’s Scandal saw the two finally go toe-to-toe in a bar blowup. Or, as Katie Lowes puts it with a laugh, it was the moment when “Quinn finally to stand up and say, ‘Don’t ever call me Lindsay again — or I will cut you!’”

While the confrontation will likely not be their last, Lowes says it does serve a purpose. “Let’s just say that after the episode last night, Quinn has definitely proven herself to Abby,” she says. “By standing up to her, »

'Scandal': Joshua Malina gets out of his suit and into a conspiracy

18 October 2012 3:35 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

When we last saw David Rosen (Joshua Malina) on "Scandal," he had been placed on leave from the U.S. attorney's office and had put up a "Homeland"-esque wall of evidence about the Quinn Perkins case in his apartment.

For the character, it's not a great moment. The actor, though, is having a blast.

"I'm very happy with where it has gone and where it continues to go, which is that he's out of his suit," Malina says during a round of interviews on the "Scandal" set. "I like the fact that you're seeing him out of his suit as much as you are this season, because it means we're getting a little bit of his personal story and seeing how he functions away from work. So I'd like to continue seeing that. I'd like to see him continue pursuing the story ... without dying."

Although Scandal revealed the "Who" behind this summer's biggest question -- "Who Is Quinn Perkins?" Answer: Lindsay Dwyer -- after the episode's closing moment that revealed Olivia and Huck were behind Lindsay's forced new identity, fans were now left wondering "Whaaaaaaaaaat?"

So what did Katie think of last night's big reveal, and how would she have reacted if put in a similar position? Read on to find out! I'm speechless. What did you think of finding out Quinn Perkins was actually Lindsay Dwyer, potential murderer?

'Scandal' Season 2: Kerry Washington teases Quinn revelations and Olivia's state of mind

Kerry Washington is not going to give anything up about Season 2 of "Scandal." In fact, the first sentence of her first answer in an interview with Zap2it is "Well, I obviously can't tell you too much about that."

And that's fine -- the show returns Thursday night (Sept. 27) and sets about answering the "Who is Quinn Perkins?" question it posed at the end of last season, so no need to jump the gun.

Washington is able to talk about her own feelings on finding out the answer, where the season will take her character, Olivia Pope's, relationship with President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) and how Olivia adjusts to her colleague Stephen Finch (Henry Ian Cusick, who has left the show). Here's what she had to say.

When the doors closed on Pope & Associates last season they were preparing to manage an unprecedented internal crisis as the police had come to arrest one of Olivia's employees, and audiences were left wondering "Who Is Quinn Perkins?"

Scandal's sensational season two premiere immediately resolves that question, but as we've come to expect from creator Shonda Rhimes, every answer only begets infinitely more questions. "My mind was blown by the season premiere," Kerry Washington tells ETonline. "I still have questions, and we're now filming episode six." But it's that mix of resolution and riddle that continues to titillate the show's stars.

Scandal Season Two Premiere Review - Dirty White Hats

Welcome back, fellow Gladiators in Suits!

Olivia Pope, along with Pope and Associates, are back in action in the second season of Scandal, and tomorrow night fans everywhere will finally have an answer to the mystery of "Who is Quinn Perkins?" as well as more questions pertaining to that topic by the end of the hour. When Shonda Rhimes said how the mystery of Quinn would be the main story arc of the season, she was not whistling dixie there.

Rhimes doesn't wait to answer the question of Quinn's identity as the truth is revealed very early in the episode, setting the stage for the main conflict of the premiere. Quinn's true identity is a plausible one, but there could be a few nitpickers who might call into question why it wasn't hinted at during the first season in some capacity. It's nothing to gripe over really since Rhimes handles »
