Antonio Campos and Brady Corbet Talk Simon Killer, in theaters and on VOD now

Director Antonio Campos burst onto the scene in 2008 with his critically-acclaimed debut Afterschool. After producing his Borderline Films partner Sean Durkin's debut Martha Marcy May Marlene, the filmmaker is back with his second feature Simon Killer, which is currently playing in theaters and available on VOD formats. Brady Corbet stars as the title character, a recent college graduate who heads to Paris and becomes enamored with a prostitute (Mati Diop), a relationship that heads down a dark path very quickly. I recently had the chance to speak with both Antonio Campos and Brady Corbet over the phone about this new indie drama. Here's what they had to say.

I read that you secured financing in an unusual way. You were seeking more funding for Martha Marcy May Marlene, and this became funded as well. That's »

Simon Killer Review

Director: Antonio Campos.

Starring: Brady Corbet, Mati Diop, Constance Rousseau, Lila Salet, Michael Abiteboul, Solo.

Running time: 101 minutes.

Certificate: 18.

Synopsis: Simon (Brady Corbet) escapes to Paris after a bad breakup, only to fall into another altogether different relationship with a prostitute. Hatching a plan to blackmail her clients, Simon starts to lose control as the pair become increasingly distant.

You may not know his name, but you may recognise Antonio Campos’ work. His Independent Spirit Award-winning feature debut, Afterschool, launched him onto Variety’s ‘Ten Directors To Watch’ list, and he has since produced the much celebrated Martha Marcy May Marlene. After meeting Brady Corbet on Sean Durkin’s 2011 film, the two started work on the rather awkward and uncomfortable Simon Killer.

After several post-breakup days of meaningless strolling through the streets of Paris, young graduate Simon is tempted by a sex bar where he meets pretty prostitute, Victoria (Mati Diop). After exchanging numbers, »

Simon Killer – review

12 April 2013 6:18 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Antonio Campos's Paris-set thriller shares the high points and pitfalls of Martha Marcy May Marlene, from the same production team

An artfully shot, po-faced thriller about an American graduate student going to pieces on an extended break in Paris. Brady Corbet is excellent as thoroughly unlikable Simon, adrift in Paris's backstreet brothels, who strikes up a relationship with a sweet-natured prostitute (Mati Diop) that becomes in turn dependent and abusive. Producer Sean Durkin is part of the brain trust behind the critical hit Martha Marcy May Marlene, and Simon Killer shares that film's high points and pitfalls. It's just as beautiful and spooky, but it's also a bit dank, too studiously serious to maintain its thrills. The story, co-written by director Antonio Campos and his stars, meanders. Simon's gap year drops him into a chasm, but it's well before then, somewhere in the tangle of gloomy sex scenes and twisty subplots, »

Film Review: 'Simon Killer'

10 April 2013 4:18 AM, PDT | CineVue | See recent CineVue news »

★★★★☆ Simon Killer (2012), the second film from Antonio Campos (Afterschool), is a bracing, darkly comic glare into the abyss. Beneath its stylish veneer is pure grit; a tangle of depravity and violence skilfully manipulated by Campos into something mysterious and disorientating. Co-produced by Martha Marcy May Marlene's Sean Durkin, it shares that film's simmering discord. Pitching their projects at the blurred boundaries of teenage alienation and madness, a picture is beginning to emerge of Borderline Films, Durkin and Campos' production company, as the chief purveyors of a very modern, fractured vision of youthful malaise.

Cs Video: Simon Killer's Antonio Campos & Brady Corbet

4 April 2013 | Comingsoon.net | See recent Comingsoon.net news »

Five years ago, director Antonio Campos came onto the scene with Afterschool , a thriller that also introduced the world to actor Ezra Miller. Then a few years later, Campos was at Sundance with his filmmaking partners of Borderline Films for Sean Durkin's Martha Marcy May Marlene . At the time, he told us he had just filmed his second movie in Paris and in 2012 that movie, Simon Killer , premiered at Sundance itself. Simon Killer is just as daring and ambitious as Afterschool , and it's significant because it marks Campos' fourth collaboration with actor Brady Corbet ( Funny Games , Mysterious Skin ) who played a supporting role in "Martha Marcy" (and a larger role in the short that preceded it), and who is really giving a showcase of his talents with the role of »

Brady Corbet Joins Paradise Lost

25 March 2013 5:01 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Not to be confused with Alex Proyas' abandoned Miltonic fantasy epic, the Paradise Lost currently heading into production is a drama about the notorious drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. As previously reported, it's the directorial debut of Andrea Di Stefano, and has Benicio Del Toro and Josh Hutcherson attached at the top of the cast. They're now joined by current indie hot-stuff Brady Corbet. As a youngster, Corbet played Alan Tracy in Jonathan Frakes' brightly-coloured Thunderbirds, but he's since taken a darker route. In recent years he's inhabited uncomfortable roles in Michael Haneke's Us version of Funny Games, Sean Durkin's Martha Marcy May Marlene, and Lars von Trier's Melancholia. We'll shortly see him in the title role in Antonio Campos' Parisian noir Simon Killer. In Paradise Lost, he'll be playing Hutcherson's brother, although it's unclear how large a part that is. Hutcherson, we're told, is »

Some of you might remember that, going on two years ago, Kris and I were big champions of "Martha Marcy May Marlene," a confidently disquieting, much-laurelled debut feature from Sean Durkin that also marked a significant step forward for BorderLine Films, the independent production company set up by Durkin with filmmaker pals Antonio Campos and Josh Mond. With just a handful of acclaimed features and shorts to its name, BorderLine is a small outfit, but one that's already built a strong brand in the independent sphere. Church Cult Thriller Holy Ghost People Gets Intense First Trailer

26 February 2013 12:00 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

In the last year and a half, there have been three fairly remarkable films centered around cults, both religious and not: Paul Thomas Anderson.s The Master, Zal Batmanglij.s Sound of My Voice, and Sean Durkin.s Martha Marcy May Marlene. While each of these films presented its subject matter from a unique perspective, each also remained clouded in ambiguity, leaving the final judgment up to the viewers who spent the entire movie calling bullshit anytime one of the cult leaders would speak. Where is the justice? Judging from the first trailer for Mitchell Altieri.s Holy Ghost People, courtesy of Deadline, justice might be settled up somewhere in the Appalachian mountain region. In the film, Emma Greenwell (True BloodShameless) hires a scruffy ex-Marine played by Brendan McCarthy (True Blood, Justified) to help her find her sister Liz (Buffy Charlet) who may have been kidnapped by a snake-handling church »

After much anticipation, Dimension Films announced today that Sin City: A Dame to Kill For co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller have chosen Eva Green (Dark Shadows, 300: Rise of an Empire, Casino Royale) to star as the film's deadly muse, Ava Lord.

Ava, the iconic character from Miller's graphic novel of the same name, is described by Miller as "every man's most glorious dreams come true, she's also every man's darkest nightmares."

Here's what Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller said about their new cast member in a statement.

"We've been wanting to tell this story for a very long time. Ava Lord is one of the most deadly and fascinating residents of Sin City. IFC dates "Simon Killer" for April

Apparently something to behold visually (with a poster to match), Simon Killer finds Funny Games and Martha Marcy May Marlene star Brady Corbet playing a well-educated, handsome and seemingly sympathetic college graduate with just a hint of something off putting enough to ignite a sense of concern. Recently heartbroken, Simon travels to Paris to clear his head. After several days of wandering aimlessly, Simon finds himself drawn into a sex parlor and has a sexual encounter with an exotic prostitute, Victoria (Mati Diop, 35 Shots Of Rum). The film is Campos' much anticipated follow-up to his unnerving, deliberate Afterschool. In the meantime, he's served as a producer on Sean Durkin's aforementioned, and fantastic, Martha Marcy.  Simon Killer is out in NYC on »
