Film Review: ‘Josie’

Film Review: ‘Josie’
Josie” is a movie that spends so much time trying to resemble a film noir that its refusal to engage in actual film noir business proves downright exasperating, a situation compounded by the eventual revelations it has in store. Despite the pic’s firm sense of its ramshackle Southern milieu and its going-to-seed characters, director Eric England’s feature is a protracted tease, using a clichéd set-up — involving a young woman who deliberately catches the eye of a solitary older man — to promise criminal intrigue and thrills that never materialize. Inert until it becomes inane, it likely will satisfy only those craving an opportunity to ogle “Game of Thrones” star Sophie Turner in short-shorts and bikinis.

Wearing a collection of fishnet stockings and tattered tank-tops that reveal her plentiful tattoos, Turner certainly shows her seductive side as Josie, a teenage blonde who — sans parents — moves into the nondescript Pink Motel.

"There's some rumors about you..." Screen Media Films has debuted the first official trailer for an indie thriller titled Josie, starring Sophie Turner (as seen in Barely Lethal, X-Men: Apocalypse, and on "Game of Thrones") as the titular character Josie. The film's plot is actually focused on a mysterious man named Hank, played by Dylan McDermott, who keeps a close eye on her. 13 Creepy and Killer Kids

Halloween is coming and we thought with all those kids that are out trick or treating, dressing up to be grown ups, that we would give these halfstacks their due, children can be creepy as well. The staff has got together and compiled thirteen films where children are to be feared.

The Children From The Children

Tom Shankland’s film shares themes in common with a couple other “youth gone mad” films of the past, but these kids are terrifying in their own way. A virus of some sort is turning the children into blodthirsty, malevolent creatures. They still look sweet, but they’re ready to kill, kill, kill. The scary imps in Cronenberg’s The Brood are spooky, but nothing freaks me out more than a normal looking child becoming violent. Kids toys become tools of murder here, and a parent’s worst nightmare is born. This well directed

Halloween Retrospective: Rob Zombie's Halloween 2

Throughout the month of October, Rob will be taking a trip down memory lane, examining the Halloween series as the films exist in chronological order.

Rob Zombie's follow-up to his prequel/remake interpretation of John Carpenter's immortal classic. Oddly enough, Daeg Faerch doesn't return for this follow-up as young Michael Myers; instead, we get some kid who's nowhere near as creepy. The good news is that Sheri Moon Zombie, who was brilliant in the first film, returns, reprising Myers' mother. I'll be examined if she's not a genuinely powerful performer in this flick after playing a howling lunatic in Zombie's previous efforts.

Review: ‘Halloween II’

Continuing the nightmare he began two years ago, Rob Zombie has returned for another go-around with the Haddonfield slasher, Michael Myers. Of course, the nightmare he began with his remake of John Carpenter’s 1978 classic, ‘Halloween,’ was not just a nightmare for the characters in the film. Many believed Zombie tried too hard to recreate Carpenter’s film, a la Gus Van Sant with ‘Psycho,’ while others felt the film deviated far too much. Still others, myself included, felt Zombie’s first effort with these characters was jarring, disjointed, and, oftentimes, uncomfortable to watch. Much of that probably had to do with Zombie’s own discomfort in trying to make his own film amidst the overall narrative of something nearly 30 years old. However, with ‘Halloween II,’ Zombie has found his comfort. No longer plagued by the belief he had to please all the people all the time, his latest film feels much more his own,

Halloween II (2009; Mike's Film Review)

  • Fangoria
There’s a subtheme running through Halloween II about the exploitation of the Michael Myers name for profit, and Exhibit A is Halloween II itself. The movie that Rob Zombie first said he’d never make, and then got rushed to the screen by Dimension Films when he changed his mind, adds nothing to the mythology established by John Carpenter and Debra Hill in 1978 and embellished by Zombie two years ago, reduces Michael from a malefic All Hallows’ spirit to a lumbering, easily distracted hulk and, most crucially, is almost never scary.

Whether due to the hurried development and production or to rumored behind-the-scenes meddling, Halloween II feels half-hearted and even less thought out. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the numerous scenes in which Michael (Tyler Mane) has visions of his mother Deborah (Sheri Moon Zombie) and his younger self (Chase Wright Vanek, a pallid replacement for the

Halloween (2007, Film Review)

And if Halloween had to be remade—which was sadly inevitable under the circumstances—Zombie was inarguably among the best choices for the job. The good news is that his take on John Carpenter’s 1978 classic demonstrates a far greater affinity for the material than the makers of the clueless Assault On Precinct 13 and The Fog remakes. The bad news is that his attempts to simultaneously explore different avenues of the story and stick to the trail forged by Carpenter ultimately cancel each other out.

For about the first 45 minutes or so, the new Halloween engenders a reaction echoing that which greeted Stanley Kubrick’s film
