TV Review: Disney Channel’s ‘Best Friends Whenever’

25 June 2015 10:15 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Disney Channel brings an expected formula to its live-action comedies, down to the use of a big event, a la “Teen Beach 2,” to launch its latest, “Best Friends Whenever.” Still, the potential fun and (gasp) even educational value in the concept, about two mismatched pals who stumble onto the ability to time travel, is largely squandered on micro moments, like going back to that morning to see if they can fix a mistake. Success will depend mostly on how well the target audience sparks to the leads, but beyond that, the future looks more slim than grim.

The show focuses on Shelby (Lauren Taylor) and Cyd (Landry Bender, a product of the Disney farm system, having played a supporting role in “Crash and Bernstein”), with the latter forced to live with her friend because her parents are off on an archaeological dig for three years – conveniently, the average run »

The sequel to Disney Channel’s wildly popular “Teen Beach Movie” will premiere this summer on June 26, the cabler announced Wednesday.

“Teen Beach 2″ will make its debut immediately before the series premiere for Disney Channel’s new live-action series “Best Friends Whenever,” which stars Lauren Taylor and Landry Bender (Disney Xd’s “Crash & Bernstein”) as time traveling best friends.

The Disney Channel Original Movie — starring the original foursome from the sing-and-dance hit, Ross Lynch (Disney Channel’s “Austin & Ally”), Maia Mitchell (ABC Family’s “The Fosters”), Garrett Clayton and Grace Phipps — sees the cast reprise their roles, but this time, the TV movie is set in Brady (Lynch) and Mack’s (Mitchell) modern-day high school world with their 1960’s silver screen friends Lela (Phipps) and Tanner (Clayton) stuck in it. The entire crew must come up with a plan to get their friends back to their old-fashioned movie world before it’s too late. »

It Will Be a 'Challenge' to Play Me, Queen Tells New Dame Kristin Scott Thomas

19 March 2015 9:00 AM, PDT | | See recent news »

Kristin Scott Thomas came face-to-face with her next subject when she was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday. The actress, 54, is set to play the queen, 88, in the play The Audience which opens next month in London's West End. She is replacing another Dame, Helen Mirren, who originated the role when the play first premiered in London in 2013. "[The queen] asked me what I was doing next, so I had to tell her and she said it would be quite a challenge," the star told reporters as she beamed with delight while showing off her medal at Buckingham Palace. »

Film Review: ‘Suite francaise’

10 March 2015 3:00 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The title is the most authentically French thing about “Suite francaise,” a fusty but enjoyably old-fashioned WWII soap that, notwithstanding its Gallic locale, is otherwise characterized by a distinctly British brand of plumminess. Based on the bestselling unfinished novel by Irene Nemirovsky, this lightly perfumed tale of the tentative romance between a married Frenchwoman and an urbane Nazi soldier during the 1940 German occupation covers no new ground historically or stylistically, and is hampered by gauche narration that undermines the expressive delicacy of Michelle Williams’s headlining performance. Still, attractive mounting and casting — with the inspired choice of Matthias Schoenaerts as Williams’s co-lead paying off handsomely — could see this Weinstein Co. property make moderately “Suite” music in limited release.

In Blighty, where Entertainment One releases the pic on March 13, “Suite francaise” is likely to entice the older audience that failed to turn out for the comparable but superior wartime weepie »

Do You Know What Getting 'Buffaloed' Is? The Guys of Parmalee Explain

2 February 2015 10:45 AM, PST | | See recent news »

Parmalee's new song "Already Callin' You Mine" is an uptempo love song about that moment when it all clicks and you realize you're really into the person you're dating. But thanks to Facebook's relationship status box, that moment isn't as simple as it used to be. "I think that every modern-day, newer relationship has had that argument ... 'Well, you haven't changed your status ...'" Josh McSwain, the band's guitarist, tells People. "It's tough. Who goes first? jokes frontman Matt Thomas. "Do you sit there together and do it at the exact same time?" "It's definitely a lot more difficult now since Facebook has come out, »

Top 100 Most Anticipated Foreign Films of 2015: #73. Catherine Corsini’s La belle saison

6 January 2015 7:45 AM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

La belle saison

Director: Catherine Corsini // Writers: Catherine Corsini, Laurette Polmanss

French director Catherine Corsini isn’t very well known in the Us, though many should be familiar with her 2009 title Leaving, which headlined Kristin Scott Thomas. She’s premiered at Cannes on four occasions, last in 2012 in Un Certain Regard with Three Worlds (which happens to be one of her weaker efforts—Corsini played in the Main Comp in 2001 with La Repetition). Her latest, La belle saison (The Beautiful Summer), is set in 1971, and concerns the budding relationship between two women from very different walks of life, something which throws both their lives into turmoil (which sounds an awful lot like post-war Diane Kurys material). Corsini (who often features striking actresses in her work, including Catherine Frot, Scott Thomas, and Clotilde Hesme) snags Cecile de France as one part of this duo, not to mention the always engaging Noemie Lvovsky. »
