‘The Boys’: Amazon Casts “The Seven” in Their Superhero Series

Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's graphic novel The Boys ran for six years from 2006 to 2012; it's taken longer than that to get an adaptation off the ground. Stretching back to at least 2010, The Boys has been eyed as a feature film and/or TV series adaptation by such notable names as Adam McKay and Neal Moritz (who's still onboard as a producer), with Simon Pegg, and Russell Crowe appearing in the project's orbit as possible stars. Most recently, after Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg found a leg up with their Ennis adaptation Preacher …

Antony Starr, Four More Join Cast of Amazon's Superhero Drama The Boys
Amazon’s new superhero series The Boys is adding a few boys — and one girl — to its cast.

Banshee alum Antony Starr leads a quintet of cast additions to the straight-to-series drama created by Eric Kripke (Supernatural, Timeless), according to our sister site Deadline. Starr will play Homelander, the leader of the show’s primary superhero collective known as The Seven. But he’s not necessarily the hero here: Based on the comic by Garth Ennis (Preacher) and Darick Robertson (Happy!), The Boys is set in a world where superheroes have let fame go to their heads and gotten corrupt

Derek’s Favorites of 2017

  • DailyDead
You didn’t need to look far to find escapism in the horror genre this past year. If you felt like losing yourself in a movie, Pennywise was waiting with open arms in the sewer drain. If you wanted to feel like a kid again, Mike and his friends were waiting for you on Netflix, their bikes parked at the Hawkins arcade when they're not fending off the Demidogs. Looking back on 2017, here are some of my favorite slices of escapism oases in the horror genre:

Stranger Things Season 2: Whether you look at it from a character, creature, or story standpoint, Stranger Things Season 2 was the Aliens to the first season’s Alien. Despite having a bigger story, The Duffer Brothers never lose sight of the characters, further exploring the tested friendships of Mike’s group (if you can even call it Mike’s group anymore, since Dustin, Lucas,

Last night, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association honored some of the most prestigious films of the year. Let’s just say that Hollywood knows which kinds of movies keep the lights on.

Starring Leslie Mann, Ike Barinholtz, John Cena, Kathryn Newton, Geraldine Indira Viswanathan, and Gideon Adlan, and co-produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, this movie took five credited screenwriters (all dudes) to mash out a script about anxious parents, who are so worried about their daughters having sex, they try to stop it from it happening.

‘Game Over, Man!’ Trailer: ‘Workaholics’ Crew Takes Down Terrorists to Save Shaggy in Netflix Comedy — Watch

Four creators of “Workaholics” — which ended its seven-season Comedy Central run in 2017 — are reuniting this spring on Netflix. Adam Devine (the “Pitch Perfect” franchise), Anders Holm (“The Mindy Project”), and Blake Anderson (“Dope”) star in Kyle Newacheck’s “Game Over, Man!,” an upcoming feature reminiscent of “The Hangover” set in Los Angeles (complete with a trashed hotel room and a blast-from-the-past scene partner, à la Mike Tyson).

In the Holm-penned script, a trio of video game creators watches in horror as party-goers are taken hostage on live television, including their financier and Shaggy, the Jamaican singer of the 2000 hit “It Wasn’t Me,” which serves as the trailer’s soundtrack.

Stay in the loop on industry and casting news with our write-up on who’s been slated for recent film and television roles! “Ball Street”While Black Friday may be the most important shopping day of the year, Black Monday conjures a less prosperous image. The moniker was given to Oct. 19, 1987, the day the stock market inexplicably crashed to its lowest point in history. The event is now fodder for Showtime’s newest potential series, “Ball Street.” The pilot looks to point fingers and implicate a band of Wall Street outsiders in the mysterious crash. The buddy project is anticipated to be a mostly comedic half-hour series. Casting is still ongoing with Allison Jones filling roles, but two names have already signed on to the project: Don Cheadle and Andrew Rannells. Erin Moriarty to play Starlight in Amazon’s The Boys

Casting is underway on Amazon’s adaptation of the Garth Ennis / Darick Robertson comic book series The Boys, with Deadline reporting that Erin Moriarty (True Detective) has joined the project.

Moriarty is set to portray Starlight, “a young woman with superhero powers who can make lightning bolts flash from her eyes. Her dream is to be a real superhero like the famous Seven.”

The actress does have previous experience in the world of comic book adaptations, having played the character of Hope Shlottman in Netflix’s Marvel series Jessica Jones.

In a world where superheroes embrace the darker side of their massive celebrity and fame, The Boys centers on a group of vigilantes known informally as ‘the boys,’ who set out to take down corrupt superheroes with no more than blue collar grit and a willingness to fight dirty.

The TV adaptation of The Boys has been created and written by Supernatural‘s Eric Kripke,

Amazon Cancels Three Series

  • Yidio
2017-12-18T11:57:54-08:00Amazon Cancels Three Series

Back in 2013, Amazon decided to let viewers decide which series it produced. The streamer put all of its contending pilots online and based the decision of which series to pick on viewer feedback from the pilots. The policy has led to quite a few unpopular and critically lambasted series getting full-season orders. That's going to change as the streamer ditches the feedback model and cancels several of its current series, including Sea Oak and Love You More.

Amazon Studios continues to inch toward scrapping its viewer feedback model.

On Monday, the streaming outlet and retail giant passed on three of its five comedy pilots, with Sea Oak, The Climb and Love You More no longer moving forward. The fate of its two remaining pilots — Greg Daniels' single-camera Upload and multicam Making Friends, from How I Met Your Mother

‘The Disaster Artist’ Mined Podcast ‘How Did This Get Made’ for Inspiration

‘The Disaster Artist’ Mined Podcast ‘How Did This Get Made’ for Inspiration
James Franco’s “The Disaster Artist” has been racking up strong box office and rapturous reviews since its limited release Dec. 1 (it went wide Dec. 8), but few know that the popular Earwolf podcast “How Did This Get Made?,” hosted by Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael and Jason Mantzoukas, played a seminal role in getting the film to the big screen.

The latest podcast revisits “Artist’s” origin story, Tommy Wiseau’s “The Room,” which many have named as the worst movie ever made, but which took off as a cult hit in L.A. and spread globally over the early 2000s. James Franco, Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Ari Graynor, writers Michael H. Webber and Scott Neustadter, “The Room’s” Greg Sestero, and Wiseau visit the “Hdtgm” studio, and the episode also includes the 2011 “Hdtgm” episode (#23) on “The Room” with Steve Heisler from The Av Club and “Room” multihyphenate Sestero (earwolf.com/show/how-did-this-get-made).

Interview, Audio: Veteran Screenwriters of ‘The Disaster Artist’

Chicago – The screenwriting team of Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber have had many adventures plying their trade, ever since their breakthrough “500 Days of Summer” in 2009. Their latest assignment was adapting “The Disaster Artist” for director and lead actor James Franco.

The Disaster Artist is a funny and intuitive profile of Tommy Wiseau, who wrote, produced and directed one of the most infamous cult films of the post millennium, “The Room.” Screenplay specialists Neustadter and Weber adapted the book of “The Disaster Artist,” written by Tom Bissell and Greg Sestero. Greg was an actor in “The Room,” and is portrayed in film by James Franco’s brother Dave. The key for the screenwriters was finding the heart of Tommy Wiseau and Greg’s relationship, on the way to creating his cult masterwork.

Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber broke through in 2009 with “500 Days of Summer,” based on an actual relationship
