In some films, particularly of the twists and turns variety, a significant event, moment or even line of dialogue, can be summarized by the phrase “This changes everything”. This is known as a Game Changer, where the established landscape of the movie’s plot is irrevocably and dramatically altered, with no chance of ever going back. Audience reaction can range from emotional sledgehammer to Wtf?
Often this single moment can encapsulate the whole film, and become its most famed component: everybody who has heard of The Crying Game is also familiar with its reveal. This isn’t the Twist Ending we’re talking about; this is the story shaking, ultimately defining wham moment.
Here are six great examples.
Obviously contains extensive spoilers.

Antonio Banderas' thriller The Skin I Live In was among the big winners at Spain's Goya Awards on Sunday night, landing four of the event's prizes.
Pedro Almodovar's movie gained a massive 16 nominations ahead of the glitzy prizegiving, but lost out in several categories to cop drama No Rest for the Wicked, which won Best Film, Best Director for Enrique Urbizu, and Best original screenplay, while Jose Coronado trumped Banderas to take the Best Actor trophy.
The Skin I Live In, which won the Best Foreign Language Film prize at the recent British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards, triumphed in four categories.
Elena Anaya took the Best Actress trophy and Jan Cornet was named Best Breakthrough Actor, while the film also scooped awards for make-up and original music.

José Coronado, No Rest for the Wicked Pedro Almodóvar didn't have much luck at the Spanish Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Goya Awards this evening in Madrid: Almodóvar's The Skin I Live In won a total of four Goyas, but none for its director/writer. Starring Antonio Banderas as a plastic surgeon, Elena Anaya as his captive woman, and Jan Cornet as the good-looking young man whom the doctor blames for the death of his daughter, the sex-bending mystery melodrama won Goyas for Best Actress (Anaya), Best New Actor (Cornet), Best Original Music (Alberto Iglesias, his tenth Goya win), and Best Makeup/Hair. [Full list of Premios Goya winners/nominations.] Instead of the internationally renowned (and BAFTA winner) The Skin I Live In, the 2012 Goyas' big winner was Enrique Urbizu's No habrá paz para los malvados / No Rest for the Wicked, the story of a murderous, corrupt cop. We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
I see a lot of movies. My fandom has a dark side too, I’ve seen so many plots play out that I can usually guess how things are going to go. When I sound glib while reviewing a trailer, it’s because I’ve seen the story play out before and I know where it’s going to go. So I love a movie that can shock me, whether in laughter, horror, sadness or empathy. This year I’ve had an abundance of these moments. These scenes knocked the complacency right out of me.
Be warned, this list is rife with Spoilers. If you don’t want to know key plot twists from the movies below, skip over them.
