- Jürgen Klinsmann is a German professional football manager and former player. Klinsmann played for several prominent clubs in Europe including VfB Stuttgart, Inter Milan, Monaco, Tottenham Hotspur, and Bayern Munich. He was part of the West German team that won the 1990 FIFA World Cup and the unified German team that won the 1996 UEFA European Championship. As a manager, he managed the German national team to a third-place finish in the 2006 World Cup and was subsequently coach of a number of other teams including, notably, Bundesliga club Bayern Munich and the United States national team.
Considered one of Germany's premier strikers during the 1990s, he scored in all six major international tournaments he participated in, from Euro 1988 to the 1998 World Cup. In 1995, he came in third in the FIFA World Player of the Year award; in 2004 he was named in the FIFA 100 list of the "125 Greatest Living Footballers". After finishing school, he trained as a baker. As "Technical Director" of adidas, he organized summer camps in the USA to promote the game of football in high schools. On July 28, 2004, Jürgen Klinsmann was appointed national coach of the German national soccer team. Klinsmann celebrated great success at the World Cup in Germany. After the German national team won 5-3 on June 30, 2006. After reaching the semi-finals against Argentina, the team under captain Michael Ballack lost 0-2 goals in extra time against Italy on July 4, 2006. In the game for third place on July 8th in Stuttgart, the German team won 3-1 against Portugal. The triumph in the "small final" was accompanied by a request to Jürgen Klinsmann not to leave the national team until the next World Cup in 2010 in South Africa. Reaching the 2006 World Cup title went to Italy in the final on July 9th, to which France lost on penalties. A few days after the final, Jürgen Klinsmann announced that he would not be extending his coaching contract, which expired at the end of July. On July 1, 2008, he took over as head coach of the FC Bayern Munich professional team.
After no success, he was released early on April 27, 2009. On November 3, 2010, Toronto FC signed Klinsmann as a consultant for the club. On August 1, 2011, he became coach of the US national team in his adopted hometown, succeeding Bob Bradley. On July 28, 2013, the US national team won the 22nd CONCACAF Gold Cup, which also qualified for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
