DreamWorks, Fox Bring ‘Shrek the Musical’ to the Living Room

Stage and touring events may be a big and growing side business for studios, but DreamWorks Animation is looking to generate even more coin from its theatrical biz, with “Shrek the Musical” set to be released on DVD and Blu-ray on Oct. 15, and earlier on most digital platforms on Sept. 17.

The release is unique since most theatrical productions aren’t released on homevideo — producers worry that doing so would keep audiences at home rather than fill theater seats to see the shows.

In the past, Universal has released a 2012 performance of “The Phantom of the Opera” at London’s Royal Albert Hall; and a 2011 staging of “Les Miserables” filmed at London’s O2 Arena. But those were special productions, not the original stage version. The “Phantom” sequel “Love Never Dies,” also from Andrew Lloyd Webber, was released on homevideo.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release “Shrek the Musical” on

Red Hook Summer Blu-ray and DVD Debut December 21st
The limits of faith and temptation are tested in the upcoming DVD and Blu-ray release of Spike Lee's Red Hook Summer. Image Entertainment's One Village label will release the film on both Blu-ray and DVD on December 21, 2012. Porno for Playgoers

The Performers

Abandon all hope of stumbling on substance, ye who enter the Longacre Theatre to see its current showing centered on the world of porn. But if you're looking for some off-color, down-and-dirty humor, you could do a lot worse. The Performers is best summed up by one of its own flippant film titles, "I ate Chinese and now I'm hungry"; it's no main course of theater, but it might leave you wanting some more.

It's difficult to shake the feeling that this play would have found a happier home Off-Broadway, but Broadway has worn less-fitting costumes and made them work, so this foul-mouthed play will just have to do its best to fill out the larger, less adventurous houses.

For all his profanity, playwright David West Read actually keeps it pretty clean for a piece about the porn industry. Writing with sitcom precision and timing, Read keeps a quick pace,

Another opening, another close: Broadway's 'The Performers' announces final curtain one day after premiere

Another opening, another close: Broadway's 'The Performers' announces final curtain one day after premiere
It turns out that the new Broadway comedy The Performers — a send-up of the porn world starring Alicia Silverstone, Henry Winkler, and Cheyenne Jackson (pictured above, right, with Daniel Breaker) — doesn’t have much stamina. One day after its opening night, the comedy’s producers announced plans to close it this Sunday after just seven official performances.

The show garnered mostly mixed reviews from critics, though EW’s Tanner Stransky gave the show an A– and praised “David West Read’s laugh-a-minute script” and costar Ari Graynor’s turn as a “ditzy scene-stealer.” The Performers becomes the quickest casualty of the new Broadway season.

Theater Review: The Performers

  • Vulture
Theater Review: The Performers
In The Performers, an entirely insubstantial, where’s-the-beef porn farce from the young playwright David West Read, a sensitive, self-regarding adult-film actor named “Mandrew” (Cheyenne Jackson) reveals a shocking personal secret to Lee (Daniel Breaker), the New York Post reporter who’s interviewing him on the eve of the Adult Video News Awards in Vegas: He talks to his mom every day, on the phone. And he sends her all of his films. “I cut out all the sex,” he explains, “She likes the acting.”The Performers feels like it was produced and directed by Mandrew’s mom. Although packed tight with dirty talk — some it funny-outré, most of it punny-soft — this is sex comedy at its most sexless: You could eat dinner off the play’s smooth, bacteriastatic surfaces. Sure, people swap dresses, and even talk about swapping partners, but the characters never menace convention — and when they do,
