Review: Splice

27 November 2010 4:06 AM, PST | Pure Movies | See recent Pure Movies news »

This is the review for Splice (directed by Vincenzo Natali and starring Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley, David Hewlett, Abigail Chu, Delphine Chanéac, Stephanie Baird, Brandon McGibbon). Splice is presented by Guillermo del Toro. Splice is the story of two genetic engineer scientists whose ambitious side-project creates a creature that would have anti-stem cell campaigners crowing “We told you so, God-playing heathens!” The film has the potential to reach classic status within the (admittedly underachieving) genre of sci-fi B-movies. We are introduced to Elsa (Sarah Polley) and Clive (Adrian Brody), our maverick leads. They are funded by, and also up against, The Man: corporate suits who drag them to board meetings to remind them that their research grant doesn’t come for free. The purpose of all their lab-based gene-splicing is to discover a cure-all protein that will prevent the spread of diseases in livestock. Elsa and Clive, however, have bigger ideas. »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Splice’ Brings Dysfunctional Parenting to a New Level

15 October 2010 5:57 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – In the opening moments of “Splice,” the audience is experiencing the world through the eyes of a newborn baby. Yet unlike Gaspar Noé’s “Enter the Void,” which recreated human perception with eerie perfection, this point of view shot is blatantly skewed. The doctors seem to be looking at a pulsating fishbowl rather than a baby. That theory is swiftly proven to be fairly accurate.

The newborn is, in fact, not a human, but an animal hybrid created by fearless scientists Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley). Though they insist that their work aims to cure diseases such as Parkinson’s, they often seem a bit too fond of playing god. And when their bosses at the pharmaceutical company demand to see experiments that yield lucrative results, the two devoted lovers and collaborators decide to conduct their controversial work in private. Their next goal: splicing DNA to form the first-ever human-animal hybrid. »

Brand New UK Splice Poster

21 June 2010 9:55 AM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

We’ve just received this lovely new poster for Adrien Body’s new movie, Splice which is released in the UK 6th August. The movie is directed by Vincenzo Natali and also stars Sarah Polley, Delphine Chanéac, Brandon McGibbon, Simona Maicanescu and David Hewlett.

Synopsis: Clive and Elsa are young, brilliant and ambitious. The new animal species they engineered have made them rebel superstars of the scientific world. In secret, they introduce human DNA into the experiment. The result is something that is greater than the sum of its parts: a female animal-human hybrid that may be a step up on the evolutionary ladder.

We’ve previously posted the trailer up here for this rather bizarre movie but it’s one I can’t wait to see. Jon and Craig have both seen it already and our review will be going up in due course.

Check Out Splice Co-Star Brandon McGibbon In This Clip From David-James Fernandes' Re-wire

7 June 2010 3:59 PM, PDT | Screen Anarchy | See recent Screen Anarchy news »

The absence of David-James Fernades' Re-Wire from this year's edition of the Worldwide Short Film Festival was a real head scratcher for me, the local production seeming like an obvious pick for the festival's SciFi program, at the bare minimum, and possibly one of the festival's competitive official selection programs. But while I personally think it's far and away one of the better science fiction shorts of the year it didn't make it in for some reason, which means local audiences have not yet had the chance to see Splice co-star Brandon McGibbon deliver a sterling performance as a young man seeking the help of an unorthodox neurosurgeon to rid him of 'the fear'.

McGibbon has a relatively minor role in Splice - he's Adrien Brody's brother - but he's front and center from start to finish of this and he's excellent. Take a look at this freshly released scene below. »

Splice Review Directed by: Vincenzo Natali Written by: Vincenzo Natali, Antoinette Terry Bryant and Doug Taylor Starring: Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley, Delphine Chaneac, Brandon McGibbon, Simona Maicanescu In the middle of one of the most generic, braindead summer movie seasons in recent memory, Vincenzo Natali's Splice shines brightly as one of the sole beacons of demented hope among mounds of manufactured studio cattle feed. This creepy and inventive movie probably has no business getting a wide release, much less one in the middle of the summer, but somehow producer Joel Silver felt that it was worth taking a risk on and picked it up for release through Warner Brothers. It probably didn't hurt that Guillermo Del Toro also lent his name to the project as an executive producer, but either way I'm not complaining. If you're a fan of unique genre films with a bit of thought behind them, »

Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley Are Scientists Creating a ‘Splice’ of Life

4 June 2010 2:48 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The science of existence gets trickier everyday, and it doesn’t help when humans start creating their own competition. The new film “Splice,” featuring Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley, explores the current trend of genetic research, while at the same time paging Dr. Frankenstein.

Rating: 3.5/5.0

Adrian Brody is Clive and Sarah Polley is Elsa. They are hot scientists-as-rock-stars, having developed several new animal disease cures through their genetic splicing of different species. The results of the gene weaving are more protoplasmic than discernible animal, but the research yields a big cash outlay from a mega-pharmaceutical corporation, hoping to isolate protein strains that can translate to new drugs.

Elsa becomes restless with the random animal experiments and hopes to expand to the next frontier – the splicing of human genetic material with other species. Unknown to Clive, she uses the lab facilities to begin the process, using her own DNA material in the mixer. »

Exclusive Video: Adrien Brody & Sarah Polley Talk Splice

4 June 2010 2:17 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Oscar winner Adrien Brody has made some interesting career choices since winning his Academy Award in 2002 for the Roman Polanski film, The Pianist. Since then Brody has appeared in many different types of films including thrillers like The Jacket, comedies such as The Darjeeling Limited, mysteries including Hollywoodland and blockbuster action films like King Kong and this summer's upcoming, Predators. Now Brody can add science fiction to his repertoire with his latest film, Splice, directed by Vincenzo Natali. His co-star in the film, actress Sarah Polley began her career at an early age with her role in the Terry Gilliam film The Adventures of Baron Munchausen but it was her role in '1997s The Sweet Hereafter that made her an established actress. After collaborating with directors like Doug Liman, David Cronenberg and Zack Snyder on films such as Go, eXistenZ and Dawn Of The Dead, respectively, the actress decided »

Interview: Director Vincenzo Natali Dissects His New Film ‘Splice’

2 June 2010 5:37 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The universe is sometimes blinded by science, and director Vincenza Natali explores that sightlessness in the upcoming “Splice,” a sci-fi thriller featuring Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley as rogue scientists trying to unlock the mysteries of life with experiments in human and animal gene splicing.

Vincenzo Natali started his career in animation, working as a storyboard artist on several TV cartoons, and occasionally doing storyboarding for movies. His breakthrough came with the Canadian backed film “Cube” in 1997, which was highly regarded and very popular in Japan and France. After three more features, he also got to direct a segment in “Paris, je t’aime” in 2005.

Splice is modern science gone awry, as two experimental scientists (Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley) begin to “splice” the genetic codes between species, adding a secret experiment with human beings.
