Here’s a passage from A Wanted Man, where author Lee Child describes the character of Jack Reacher: “He was one of the largest men she had ever seen outside the NFL. He was extremely tall, and extremely broad, and long-armed, and long-legged. The lawn chair was regular size, but it looked tiny under him. It was […]

I have a soft spot for the Jack Reacher movies, and even the Lee Child novels, but I guess even I imagined that Reacher would be… bigger in the movies.Tom Cruise, who bagged the part, reportedly only stands at 5ft 7in – and the character is written as being 6ft 5in.
Well, Cruise is pretty decent as Reacher, but another Hollywood heavyweight has revealed that he once went for the coveted role, only to lose out. That man was Dwayne Johnson who was told by a fan that he would be perfect for the role… His reply on Twitter:

It is a casting decision that has long puzzled fans and critics: how did Tom Cruise, who is said to be 5ft 7in (1.70 metres), come to appear as the 6ft 5in (1.95 metre) Jack Reacher in the film adaptations of Lee Child’s crime novels?
Now comes news that a rather more proportionally suitable star was in contention to play the hulking private investigator, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson revealing that he was turned down for the part.

If you've only ever read Lee Child's Jack Reacher books, then you may think Tom Cruise an odd choice to play the character. It's purely a physical difference, with the book version of Reacher, a former Army MP who now wanders America seeking justice, being written as a giant of a man whose sheer might can kill with one punch. Cruise, as we can all plainly see, is not a one-punch-kill giant. And yet he's still an utterly fantastic Jack Reacher. Despite the physical difference between the two, Cruise plays him with such presence and command that the character still feels larger than life and capable of anything. He's quiet and understated. He listens more than he talks. He fights only when he has to. And when he throws a punch, you know whoever is on the...

What is it? A one-armed man arrives via train in a remote western town, and the populace reacts with suspicion and violence.
Why buy it? Spencer Tracy excels as the polite but mysterious stranger whose presence sets everyone on edge, and the more he probes the harder they push. The film explores threads of America’s deep-seated racism and small-town insulation, and it pairs that commentary with a steadily increasing suspense. The themes and actions here are still sadly relevant, even now, and it makes for an important watch that still manages to entertain. Tracy’s potential adversaries include Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Walter Brennan, and »
