Film Review: Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping

24 August 2016 3:27 AM, PDT | CineVue | See recent CineVue news »

★★☆☆☆ Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is one of those films where you can hear the pitch while you're watching the movie. "It'll be This is Spinal Tap for the millennials, for the Beliebers," is probably how it went. And the prospects were good. It's a comedy from the team who brought you the sporadically hilarious The Lonely Island - Adam Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone - the guys whose digital shorts livened up many an episode of Saturday Night Live and at least one afternoon trawling YouTube instead of working. The big question would have been can the bite-sized joke been spun out into the heftier meal of a feature? And the answer is no, not really. Actually, not at all.

Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.

Almost Holy (Steve Hoover)

The most fascinating part of Steve Hoover‘s latest documentary Almost Holy is how its subject Gennadiy Mokhnenko parallels the life of well-known Russian cartoon Krokodil Gena. The latter deals with a lonely crocodile zoo worker named Gena and his friend Cheburashka: a young, abandoned creature rejected by the establishment employing him. The two therefore construct a home for the lonely as »

Andy Samberg's Conner4Real discusses some of his musical influences in our exclusive deleted scene from the new Lonely Island comedy Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, ahead of its Digital HD release on August 16. As he keeps going through his list of "classics," it seems clear that Conner isn't too familiar with what defines a classic artist, with some questionable choices on his playlist.

Andy Samberg stars in this hilarious comedy as a former boy-band member trying desperately to salvage his failing solo career, coming to Digital HD on August 16, 2016, On Demand on August 30, 2016, and Blu-ray&#8482 and DVD on September 13, 2016, from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. 10 films to beat the 2016 blockbuster fatigue

28 July 2016 12:08 PM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Mark Harrison Aug 1, 2016

Fed up of big blockbusters right now? Here are some smaller movie treats to be found in August in UK cinemas...

Around this time of the year, we like to shine a spotlight on the slightly smaller films coming out after most of the box office juggernauts have been and gone. But with each annual feature, we've noticed that the year is filling up with blockbusters more and more. The year's first comic book movie was February's Deadpool, a surprise box office smash and Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice got 2016's blockbuster season started much earlier than usual.

We're late enough in this elongated season that August will find the blockbuster schedule repeating itself - Ben Affleck's Batman will be back on screen for a cameo in DC Movies' Suicide Squad, Disney follows The Jungle Book with a live-action remake of Pete's Dragon, and Ricky Gervais »

Mike Birbiglia Says ‘Don’t Think Twice’ is ‘More Like Life’ Than a Movie

21 July 2016 9:56 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

“I’ll be the sixth lead in the indie film and that’s ok,” joked comedian Chris Gethard Wednesday night at the Sunshine Landmark Cinema for the New York premiere of “Don’t Think Twice.”

“It’s easier for [photographers] to take pictures of me until Keegan[-Michael Key] gets here,” Gethard laughed – playing off the theme of the film, which follows a New York City improv troupe. When one member gets his big break, they begin to realize they can’t all make it in the business.

While the movie surrounds comedians played by Key, Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci, Tami Sagher, and Mike Birbiglia, producer Miranda Bailey said the film is a “drama about comedy.”

“It’s more about friendship and life and it’s about an experience. What does success do to friendships and jealousy? It explores those kinds of things in a really funny way.”

Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping

7 June 2016 4:00 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Eric here, with a quick review of the new movie from The Lonely Island comedy trio of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone, Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Pop Star is one of those films, like Anchorman or Zoolander, that gives you two choices:  surrender or resist.  You can either dive headfirst into this mockumentary of pop music sensation Conner4Real, and enjoy a hodgepodge of hit-or-miss jokes…or you can yawn at the filmmakers calling in a favor to every famous person they know (Carrie Underwood, Adam Levine, Usher, etc.) to lend some authenticity to the piece.

If you resist, Pop Star is probably a pretty unbearable sit, because it’s another movie from producer Judd Apatow that features a bunch of male comedy guys conning a studio out of about $30 million just so they can show the world (and themselves) how adorably imbecilic but ultimately likable they are. »

‘Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping’ Review

What do you get if you take the outrageous gross-out comedy of producer Judd Apatow (Trainwreck, Superbad, Knocked Up) and the trio of Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone, collectively known as comedy pop songsters The Lonely Island? Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping  – a faux-documentary which is (and this may sound bombastic) the This is Spinal Tap for the Justin Bieber generation.

The story is the flimsiest of plots: the film goes behind the scenes as former The Style Boyz member (think New Edition meets Beastie Boys) turned solo artist singer/rapper Conner4Real (Samberg) faces a crisis of popularity after his sophomore album flops, leading his entire career into a unrecoverable talispin – leaving his fans, »
