‘White Famous’ Review: Jay Pharoah’s ‘Californication’ Knock-Off Is Shallower and Less Funny

‘White Famous’ Review: Jay Pharoah’s ‘Californication’ Knock-Off Is Shallower and Less Funny
Californication,” the David Duchovny-led Showtime comedy that ran for seven seasons (yes, seven) in the early aughts, had enough flaws that no one should want to copy it. For one, it may have been the last “woe-is-me rich white man” story to sneak in under the cultural cut-off point, and even Duchovny’s considerable charms couldn’t get it an extension past Season 4. Then there was the casual objectification of women (despite Hank Moody’s knightly intentions), rehashed romantic arcs, and truly awful supporting characters.

White Famous” fixes the first problem by focusing on an up-and-coming black actor (played by Jay Pharoah), but brings in a slew of new ones, all while creating a carbon copy of “Californication” that’s as flat as Duchovny’s abs and half as interesting. Tom Kapinos’ new

The Last Man on Earth: Season Four Ratings

Despite continuing low ratings, Fox renewed The Last Man on Earth TV show for a fourth season. Season four can be a dangerous time for low-rated TV series. While 100 episodes still may be the gold standard for syndication, in recent years, packages with 88 episodes or so (i.e. four seasons of around 22 episodes each) have sold well. However, this sitcom has had shorter than average seasons. A total of only 49 episodes were produced during its first three installments. Could that low count help it snag another pickup? Will The Last Man on Earth be cancelled or renewed for season five? Stay tuned. A Fox post-apocalyptic comedy, The Last Man on Earth stars Will Forte, Kristen Schaal, January Jones, Mel Rodriguez, Mary Steenburgen, and Cleopatra Coleman. After a deadly virus devastates the planet, Phil Tandy Miller (Forte) believes he's the last

‘White Famous’ Trailer: Jay Pharoah Struggles With Selling Out in New Showtime Comedy — Exclusive
White Famous” is loosely based on the career of Jamie Foxx, but it might also apply to the path taken by its star, Jay Pharoah. Pharoah, who was lauded as a superstar in the making when he joined “Saturday Night Live” in 2010, was instead surprisingly cut from the show in 2016.

Pharoah is known for his spot-on impersonations of celebrities like Jay-z and Denzel Washington. But ultimately he felt underutilized by the show. “You go where you’re appreciated,” he told a radio station earlier this year. “They put people into boxes and whatever they want you to do, they expect you to do. And I’m fiery. I’m not a yes n—-.”

In “White Famous,” Pharoah’s character, young comedian Floyd Mooney, must navigate similar tricky situations – while staying true to himself and his credibility – as he strives for a career that makes him, in the words of
