‘Don’t Think Twice’ Stars Gillian Jacobs and Kate Micucci On How to Maneuver The Wilds of Hollywood

22 July 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Give most any performer half a chance, and they’ll tell you how hard it is to be in show business. There’s the constant rejection, soul-crushing survival jobs and the unique hell of internet trolls. But Gillian Jacobs and Kate Micucci aren’t any performers. As they chiseled eccentric paths through the contemporary comedy landscape, both actresses have managed to keep their spirits high. And with the new showbiz dramedy “Don’t Think Twice,” the delightful duo finally had a chance to share the screen, much to our collective good fortune.

Written and directed by Mike Birbiglia, “Don’t Think Twice” centers on the improv The Commune. After years working together in a supportive and silly environment, the group and their dynamic are threatened as their comedy club is closing down, and one of their number gets a big break on a certain Saturday night sketch comedy show. Too »

Another Period: behind the scenes of the Downton Abbey parody

15 June 2016 12:46 PM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

The period drama parody will begin its second season with Christina Hendricks, a host of star guests, and some sharp things to say about the past and present

If you are afraid of giant, taxidermized animals or prosthetic genitals, you are advised to avoid the set of Comedy Central’s historical sitcom Another Period. Dead, stuffed bears are not for everyone (including one very squeamish journalist) but the presence of corpses contorted into terrifying poses adds to the old-timey ambience of the set – a sprawling mansion perched on a hill on Los Angeles’s east side. Occasionally, you catch a glimpse of the La skyline and need something to jolt you back into the past.

Another Period, which begins its second season on Wednesday night, is a wry satire of the Upstairs Downstairs/Downton Abbey-style class drama created by comedians Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome. (I had previously met them for a Grantland podcast.) The series transports the genre to the United States, circa the turn of the 20th century, while grafting on elements of our modern fixation with reality TV. It tells the story of the Bellacourts, an old money family in Newport, Rhode Island, that’s consumed with all manner of drama – infidelity, thievery, incest and overall poor behavior.

Another Period stars Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome are known to watch episodes of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, but they want to be clear why they're doing it. As one of the creators of a comedy based on the premise of "if the Kardashians moved into Downton Abbey," Leggero admits she watched the E! reality show, "but only for research purposes." "I want to be clear: I hate the Kardashians, personally," she tells People. But her co-creator has a different point of view: "Ricky doesn't horror-watch it, she just watch-watches it," says Leggero. "She really sees the good in the Kardashians. »

Nerdland Review [Tribeca 2016]

14 April 2016 9:00 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

A wealth of comedic talent went into making Nerdland, the animated feature film from the creative team of director/producer Chris Prynoski and writer Andrew Kevin Walker.

Prynoski’s animation studio Titmouse, Inc. is the production company behind Adult Swim’s The Venture Brothers and Metalocalypse, so it’s no surprise he managed to collect comedians as talented and disparate as Patton Oswalt, Paul Rudd, Molly Shannon, Ron Lynch, Mike Judge and Hannibal Buress to lend their voices to his first animated feature. So, it’s a shame – a painful, crying shame – then that such talent should be squandered on such a hapless piece of bad-humored social commentary.

Nerdland tells the painfully recognizable story of John (Rudd) and Elliot (Oswalt), two deluded slackers in Los Angeles whose dreams of stardom are continually cut short by their lack of discernible talent. They pretend to be dating Sally (Kate Micucci) and Linda »

Tribeca Film Review: ‘Nerdland’

14 April 2016 7:00 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The hunger for Hollywood fame gets profanely skewered by “Nerdland,” an orgy of animated R-rated raunch from Titmouse, Inc. (creators of TV’s “Motorcity,” “Metalocalypse” and “Superjail!”) and its head honcho, Chris Prynoski. With a scuzzy style to match its sleazeball vision of spotlight desperation and depravity, this Tinseltown satire — led by voice work from Paul Rudd and Patton Oswalt — revels in the foulness of 21st-century pop culture, albeit to a degree that’s ultimately both exhausting and redundant. Its extremeness should satisfy fans of the studio’s wild, rapid-fire comedy style, but broader theatrical prospects seem dim.

From garbage-strewn apartments to billboards covered in bird crap and overpasses populated by puking weirdos, “Nerdland” imagines L.A. as a festering sore overrun by star-seeking cretins. Two such vermin are roommates Elliot (Oswalt) and John (Rudd), the former a string-beany aspiring screenwriter who’s working on a vengeful Rip Van Winkle »
