Fifty Shades Of Black review

It only took a year: here's the spoof take on 50 Shades Of Grey. Chortle.

When Scary Movie came out back in 2000, some remarked that the sleeper hit horror parody was spoofing a satire by drawing inspiration and iconography from Scream, which Wes Craven intended as a trope-riddled satire of the genre. Nevertheless, four sequels and a slew of other parody movies (mostly by 'two of the six writers', Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg) followed and have served to run the art of cinematic parody into the ground over the last 15 years.

Fifty Shades Of Black hasn't been anywhere near as big a hit for co-writer and star Marlon Wayans as Scary Movie was, although it's arguably in a similar situation as that first breakout hit. Many of us (this reviewer included) felt that last year's E.L. James adaptation Fifty Shades Of Grey was already hilarious by accident, »

'Kung Fu Panda 3' Takes the Weekend Box Office with $41M

31 January 2016 11:11 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

While January isn't typically a big month for box office blockbusters, there can be the occasional movie that opens big. Two weeks ago, Ride Along 2 breathed some life into the new year with a respectable $35.2 million opening frame, but last weekend, it dropped a whopping 64.7% and slipped from first to third place, with the holdover The Revenant taking the top spot in its fifth week in theaters. This weekend is shaping up to be the biggest frame of the new year so far, with three heavily-promoted new releases, Kung Fu Panda 3, Fifty Shades of Black and The Finest Hours. Box Office Mojo is reporting that Kung Fu Panda 3 took the top spot at the box office with $41 million.

Kung Fu Panda 3 is expected to easily take the top spot with a projected $48 million, which isn't terribly surprising given this franchise's pedigree of critical acclaim and box office success. »

Movie Review – Fifty Shades of Black (2016)

31 January 2016 9:56 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Fifty Shades of Black, 2016.

Directed by Michael Tiddes.

Starring Marlon Wayans, Kali Hawk, Affion Crockett, Jane Seymour, Florence Henderson, Jenny Zigrino, Fred Willard, and Mike Epps.

Synopsis:

An inexperienced college student meets a wealthy businessman whose sexual practices put a strain on their relationship.

Normally, whenever I’m about to watch a modern-day Marlon Wayans comedy (I use that term loosely as to not insult actual comedies) I am mentally crying inside, trying to prepare myself for the next 90 minutes that will inexplicably feel as long as some epic Christopher Nolan movie. This time though, I had some hope coming in. After all, this time around it is Fifty Shades of Grey being parodied and roasted; a movie so unintentionally hilarious and plagued with both despicable and idiotic characters, it feels as if the spoof material would write itself.

The answer to that inquiry is both yes and no, as »

Box Office: Chris Pine’s ‘Finest Hours’ Opens to Choppy $375,000 on Thursday

29 January 2016 8:34 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Disney’s sea-rescue adventure “The Finest Hours” has opened with a moderate $375,000 on Thursday night.

The Finest Hours,” which recreates the 1952 Coast Guard rescue mission off the New England coast, has been forecast for an opening in the $10 million range this weekend — an unpromising start for a film with a reported $70 million price tag. It will open Friday in 2,700-plus 3D locations and 190 Imax screens, with older males expected to be the largest demographic.

The action-adventure, starring Chris Pine, Casey Affleck and Eric Bana, topped previews for two other recent Disney entries — “McFarland,” which opened with $260,000 on its way to an $11 million opening weekend, and “Million Dollar Arm,” which scored $250,000 in previews and launched with $10.5 million.

This weekend will also see the opening of Open Road’s “Fifty Shades of Grey” spoof “Fifty Shades of Black,” starring Marlon Wayans, at 2,075 sites. The film took in $275,000 during Thursday previews.

Film Review: ‘Fifty Shades of Black’

28 January 2016 11:16 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

At a minimum, a parody should be funnier than the film it’s sending up, but “Fifty Shades of Black,” a quick-and-dirty riff on last year’s S&M romance “Fifty Shades of Grey,” falls a laugh or two short of even that low standard. After wringing every last joke out of the “Paranormal Activity” movies with “A Haunted House” and its sequel, co-writer/star Marlon Wayans, co-writer Rick Alvarez and director Michael Tiddes handcuff themselves to the latest pop-culture phenomenon, but don’t have the requisite discipline for the material. It wouldn’t take much to tip the brittle kink of E.L. James’ fantasy into the realm of comedy — the movie itself did it occasionally, if not always intentionally — but the vulgar bigness of Wayans’ style blows right past deadpan. Nevertheless, though this dire outing won’t win Wayans any new fans, there’s still an audience eager to »

Marlon Wayans, Kali Hawk & 'Fifty Shades of Black' Director Talk Marlon's Magic Mike Scene at Hollywood Premiere

28 January 2016 8:00 AM, PST | CineMovie | See recent CineMovie news »

In Fifty Shades Of Black, Marlon Wayans doesn't only parody the risqué novel turned movie, but Magic Mike also gets the spoof treatment with Marlon Wayans stripping down to a g-string. Wayans co-star Kali Hawk and director Michael Tiddes (A Haunted House) reveal the star wasn't thrilled to take it all off, but Wayans is telling us a different story. Watch the hilarious interview where Wayans offers to show us his "johnson" to prove he's not a "prude."

‘Fifty Shades of Black’s’ Marlon Wayans on Parody Films: ‘There’s a Science to It’

27 January 2016 3:56 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

To veteran comedian and parody filmmaker Marlon Wayans — who stars in Open Road’s “Fifty Shades of Black” — the ingredients of a successful parody are a great story, characters with intentions, funny dynamics and infusions of pop culture.

“It has to be organic. There’s a science to it, but you just have to be smart about your approach,” Wayans told Variety on Tuesday at the Los Angeles premiere of “Fifty Shades of Black,” a parody film he also co-wrote and produced.

The film, a spoof on “Fifty Shades of Grey,” follows the developing relationship of shy, inexperienced college student Hannah  (Kali Hawk) and shady businessman Christian Black (Wayans).

Adding to the discussion of developing well-received parodies, “Fifty Shades of Black” co-writer and producer Rick Alvarez said that it’s important that audiences are ready to find the humor in whatever subject is being spoofed.

‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ to Deliver a Punch to the U.S. Box Office

27 January 2016 3:09 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Kung Fu Panda 3” should win the upcoming weekend box office in the U.S. with at least $40 million at 3,955 theaters.

Fox is distributing the animated comedy for DreamWorks Animation five years after “Kung Fu Panda 2” opened in late May with $47.7 million domestically on its way to $162.5 million. The 2008 original opened with $60.2 million and ended its run with $215 million in the U.S.

Moviegoing should recover from last weekend, when a massive snowstorm held down box office in the eastern U.S. and “The Revenant” led with $16 million.

“‘Kung Fu Panda’ makes the move from summer to late January and should deliver a solid punch to the box office solar plexus as families who have ostensibly been left out in the cold with few options for appropriate entertainment at the multiplex of late, will flock to theaters this weekend and give the film a debut that should land somewhere between the first two installments, »
