James Bond Retrospective: Octopussy (1983)

15 May 2012 3:15 PM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

To mark the 50th Anniversary of one of the most successful movie franchises of all time and with filming almost complete on James Bond’s 23rd official outing in Skyfall due for release later this year, I have been tasked with taking a retrospective look at the films that turned author Ian Fleming’s creation into one of the most recognised and iconic characters in film history.

For Octopussy, the thirteenth official James Bond film, 1983 proved to be rather unlucky. After a lengthy court battle with the co-writer of Thunderball, Kevin McClory, Albert R. Broccoli’s Eon Productions had lost the right to use Bond’s nemesis Blofeld and his organisation Spectre in any of their films. McClory had been trying since 1974 to get his own rival Bond film made but due to a lack of financial backing and legal action from United Artists and the Fleming Trustees his project »

NBC Picks Up Comedy Pilot ‘Next Caller’ To Series

11 May 2012 12:19 PM, PDT | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

NBC has given one last-minute comedy series order to the Dane Cook starrer Next Caller, which I hear is being picked up for six episodes. The project, from writer Stephen Falk, Lionsgate and Universal TV, is a single-camera gender comedy focusing on a brash alpha male DJ (Cook) and his new, plucky, feminist co-host (Collette Wolfe) set in the offices of a satellite radio station. There had been talk that NBC liked the premise but was considering redeveloping it. That is still a possibility given that fact that the order is for 6 episodes, likely for midseason. As Next Caller got a nod, I hear the last remaining NBC comedy pilots have now gotten a pass. That includes the multi-camera Kari Lizer project starring Minnie Driver and Andrea Anders and Daddy’s Girls starring Scott Bakula, which may be shopped elsewhere. With the Next Caller pickup, NBC’s tally is seven »

In a few short weeks, the broadcast networks will storm Madison Avenue with a whole new crop of shows that will either have the power to blow the roof off Nielsen — or give cable another opportunity to crow about their greatness. The Original Jenna On '30 Rock' Speaks

26 March 2012 5:43 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

You won't find a Hollywood feud between Rachel Dratch and Tina Fey. The two "Saturday Night Live" alumnas starred in NBC's "30 Rock" ... that is, an unaired pilot version.

After the original pilot, Dratch, who played Jenna DeCarlo, Liz Lemon's (Fey) best friend and star of the fictional sketch comedy show "The Girlie Show," the role of Jenna was recast. Jane Krakowski landed the role and the character became Jenna Maroney.

"When I was let go, I didn't think it was a big deal," Dratch told the New York Post. "The direction of the character had changed and pilots are recast all the time. I thought it would be a nonstory, but suddenly it blew up."

Dratch went on to play multiple parts on "30 Rock," including that of a cat wrangler In the aired pilot.

With Roger Moore well and truly established in the lead role after just one film, work began on a follow-up to Live And Let Die almost as soon as it was released into cinemas. Keen to capitalise on the renewed success of the character, producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman chose Fleming’s final Bond novel, The Man With The Golden Gun as their ninth film featuring the British secret agent.

With the novel taking place largely in Jamaica, it was felt »

Exclusive: Minnie Driver is set to star opposite Andrea Anders in Kari Lizer’s NBC comedy pilot Lady Friends. The Warner Bros. TV-produced project is about two life-long female friends who are living very different lives but couldn’t live without each other. Nicole (Anders) has everything going for her. Her best friend, Jen (Driver), has parents who have no faith in her, terrible instincts that led her to a 17-day marriage to a guy who dumped her, and she gained 15 pounds on the cabbage soup diet. And yet, somehow, she is Nicole’s rock. Lady Friends landed Driver in a nail-biter, after a month-long pursuit. The producers cast the other lead, Anders, at the beginning of February when they also identified Driver as the choice for Jen. Trouble In 'Cougar Town'? Star Books New TV Gig

29 February 2012 9:00 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Josh Hopkins has joined the cast of "Lady Friends," Kari Lizer 's new NBC comedy pilot, reports TV Guide. But before you break out your Big Carl to mourn the thought of Grayson leaving Jules on "Cougar Town," just because Hopkins has joined an NBC pilot doesn't mean that he's leaving the ratings-challenged ABC comedy.

Just think of it as job security. "Cougar Town" creator Bill Lawrence tweeted the news earlier Tuesday. "Letting my cast do pilots in 2nd position," he tweeted. "Hoping they get parts, then have to be replaced (like Damon Wayans Jr. Happy Endings/New Girl)... I'm still betting we will survive, and that pilot will be screwed. But I'm an optimistic guy."

In the comedy, two female friends, Nicole (Andrea Anders), who seemingly has the perfect life, and Jen, who can't seem to get it together, can't live without each other. Hopkins will play Nicole's husband. »
