"For humanity to survive, 20% of the population must volunteer to die" in Humane, the feature film directorial debut of Caitlin Cronenberg. An exploration of the lethal lengths humanity (and one family in particular) will take to preserve itself in the face of a worldwide ecological disaster, Humane will arrive in select theaters on April 26th, and we have a look at the trailer ahead of its release.
Directed by Caitlin Cronenberg and written and produced by Michael Sparaga, Humane stars Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, Enrico Colantoni, Sebastian Chacon, Sirena Gulamgaus, Alanna Bale, and Peter Gallagher.
Synopsis: Humane takes place over a single day, mere months after a global ecological collapse has forced world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce the earth’s population. In a wealthy enclave, a recently retired newsman has invited his grown children to dinner to announce his intentions to enlist in the nation’s new euthanasia program.

While we eagerly await her brother Brandon’s release of Infinity Pool (I’d be shocked if this does not premiere in Park City next January), photographer Caitlin Cronenberg will be the next in the family to move into production and we’re indeed getting close as advertised on the socials. While no cast names have been advanced, Humane, which appears to be working with the main theme found in the Un Certain Regard selected Plan 75 will probably move into production in the fall. We’re still working with the info that hit the trades a year back.

Welcome to the latest installment in our regular Movies You May Have Missed series here on Nerdly, in which I highlight some of, what I think, are the best movies that have flown under the radar of many or have been “forgotten” in the intervening years since its release. This time round it’s At Your Service, aka Servitude, a 2011 Canadian comedy about the restaurant industry.
Stars: Joe Dinicol, Rachel Skarsten, John Bregar, Enrico Colantoni, David Foley, Margot Kidder, Lauren Collins, Aaron Ashmore, Kristen Hager, Linda Kash | Written by Michael Sparaga | Directed by Warren P Sonoda
If there’s two things I’m a fan of it’s Ryan Reynolds’ movies and Canada. Put those two together and you get At Your Service, the story of a group of servers and staff at a franchise chain restaurant (much like Ryan Reynolds’ Waiting) who have one last wild night at their...

Quite a thing when your surname’s a noun, adjective, and verb. I don’t think Brandon Cronenberg’s yet assumed the mantle that suggests, but as his dad—who, granted, has wrapped Crimes of the Future before its inevitable Cannes 2022 premiere—isn’t getting any younger, it’d hardly be the worse thing for genre cinema to have a new force, if not name. We can add to that potential mantle Caitlin Cronenberg, who recently worked on The Death of David Cronenberg and has set her directorial debut, Humane.
Per THR, the feature’s a dystopian thriller centered on “a family dinner, held after an environmental collapse where the world lost 20 percent of its population, when a father’s plan to enlist in the government’s new euthanasia program goes horribly wrong.” (Under the umbrella of body horror? Let’s wait and see.) Michael Sparaga has scripted and will...

Who among us hasn’t watched a TV series and felt as if we had gotten to intimately know our favorite characters? Michael Sparaga’s upcoming documentary “The Missing Ingredient: What Is The Recipe For Success?” is an insightful exploration into New York City restaurant culture and what exactly it takes to become an institution in such a cut-throat environment. In order to get to the bottom of this inquiry, Sparanga focuses on two restaurants. The first is Gino’s, an Upper East Side fixture that’s been around for over half a century. It has a fiercely loyal clientele and has hosted a number of remarkable regulars over the years, including Frank Sinatra, Sophia Loren, and John Lennon. Its iconic zebra wallpaper inspired Woody Allen and Wes Anderson to feature it in their films “Mighty Aphrodite” and “The Royal Tenenbaums.”

- Today, Sydney’s Possible Worlds: Canadian Film Festival kicks off, and it promises to be quite a week of cinema. It was a surprise to me to learn that it is the first Canadian Film Festival in Sydney as there has been an abundance of annual minor festivals of national cinema popping up over the last ten years. The festival will be taking place at the city’s recently revitalised art house cinema, the Chauvel. What really separates the Canadian Film Festival from other national cinema festival are the events lined up to accompany the program. The opening night film, Familia, a drama that won ‘Best Canadian First Feature’ at the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival, is being screened with a Q & A with director Louise Archambault. Archambault is also doing a Q & A with the festival’s program ‘Shorts: Award Winners’ as her short Atomic Sake
