True Story with Hamish & Andy reflects the reassuring myths we need right now

Beloved comedians Hamish Blake and Andy Lee host a warm-hearted show about everyday people, supported by great comic actors. What’s not to like?

There’s something satisfying simple about True Story with Hamish & Andy, not least because it does exactly what is says on the box.

There’s nothing flash about the premise. A person sits down and tells a favourite personal anecdote – which, inevitably, is about something going embarrassingly wrong – with filmed inserts dramatising the story being told, and … well, that’s it. That’s literally the entire show.

Hamish and Andy: 'Australians love talking about their stuff-ups'

4 June 2017 11:17 PM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Comedians Hamish Blake and Andy Lee are full of great anecdotes but their new television show stars the pub yarns of everyday Australians

The good old-fashioned pub yarn is having something of a pop culture resurgence. Venues including Sydney’s Giant Dwarf host popular themed-story evenings, while in New York, formats such as the Moth have reinvigorated the in-person anecdote as a public event. Meanwhile, podcasting has enabled stories to be distributed far beyond the campfire. Hilarious anecdotes are bricks and mortar for standup comedians. The best tell us stories that not only make us howl with laughter but also groan with recognition.

It is fitting, then, that the people to reinvigorate the pub yarn for a television audience are the comedy duo Hamish Blake and Andy Lee.
