Subtitled series are currently riding high in the UK – but which British shows are making a good impression with European audiences?
Being British can sometimes be embarrassing when you're travelling in Europe, meeting Dutch and Belgian people whose grasp of spoken English outstrips your own – and after three days at the Series Mania TV festival in Paris I've also found that knowledge and appreciation of British TV among other Europeans is pretty impressive. And in the UK, we too have rediscovered our fondness for television that comes with subtitles. And judging by the screenings and talks at Series Mania, there are plenty of good things to follow current favourites such as The Bridge.
French television, for those unfamiliar with it – Spiral (BBC4) and Braquo (FX) currently air in the UK – is nothing if not ballsy. Coming up on French small screens is Ainsi soient-ils (given the English name Churchmen), a »

Guy Pearce takes on a rare wisecracking action hero role in Lockout. Here’s our review of a genuinely entertaining sci-fi thriller…
From a stuffily critical perspective, Lockout is utterly ridiculous. But then again, it’s a movie designed from the ground up to be big, over-the-top and highly entertaining: it’s a sci-fi action flick for geeks raised on such fodder, and eagle-eyed fanatics will spot references here from action cinema of every kind.
The story and its laconic hero are straight out of Escape From New York and its sequel. Its one-liners and duct-crawling moments of suspense are clearly inspired by Die Hard. The bickering chemistry between Guy Pearce’s hero and Maggie Grace’s imperilled president’s daughter Emilie Warnock recalls Romancing The Stone. There’s even a late one-liner that appears to be borrowed from the 1986 Stallone flick, Cobra.

"Cabin in the Woods" is out this weekend. That's probably all we're allowed to say about that. Well, one more thing: go see it, it's awesome. Okay, fine, we'll talk a little bit more about the Joss Whedon-produced horror flick in today's edition of Watch It, but that's not the only movie on our minds.
With "Lockout" coming out this week, one member of the MTV Movies team dove back into another Guy Pearce classic as his pick of the week. And somehow, someway, another of our writers never got around to seeing "Titanic" until last weekend's 3-D rerelease. Madness, we say! His take on James Cameron's historical-fiction epic is past the break, along with our other picks.
Ryan Rigley, MTV News contributor
I saw “Titanic” for the first time ever this weekend. It was good, as I’m sure everyone is well aware of by now. My »

Misfits Season 1 Episode 1 Review. Misfits: Season 1, Episode 1 is the beginning of a TV series is the beginning of a teens with powers TV show. Misfits is Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Smallville on steroids, with vulgarity, tawdriness, and dialogue reflexive of the real world, or the world existing in the Great Britain.
Regardless of the inherent local veniuclar, the “heroes” themselves are the draw, all delinquients yet all individuals. Their differences make their group unique, even though their group is a community service work detail.
The stand out in the group is Nathan Young (Robert Sheehan), a loud mouth that can never keep his opinion to himself, saying what many are thinking out loud. He is also the comic relief in the episode.
There is one overt and extended scene involving a water bottle and Alisha Bailey (Antonia Thomas) that could never be on American airwaves (perhaps the FX Network »

Demons Never Die, 2011.
Directed by Arjun Rose.
Starring Robert Sheehan, Ashley Walters and Tulisa Contostavlos.
Synopsis:
A group of troubled teens make a suicide pact after a classmate takes her own life. But all is not what it seems.
The best way to describe Demons Never Die is to call it an ‘urban horror’. Why? Well because it’s about a group of chavvy urban types getting stabbed to death by some masked maniac. But oh, there are a few twists and turns! Because one of them might be the killer.
The film opens with N Dubz’ Tulisa scribbling ‘Murder’ on a notepad and drinking a glass of milk. Hardly ground breaking. She’s had an argument with her other half after having an abortion. Her dad pops out, and when he returns, he finds her cut up in what clearly doesn’t look like suicide, but that’s what »

In my never-ending quest to find a TV show that can help bridge the gap between Skins series, I have watched several British teen shows that have just made me miss Skins more.
Not so with Misfits.
Misfits, an E4 original program, is about to start Series 4 in the UK, so the excellence of this show certainly is not news to our British readers. But since Series 3 just started streaming on Hulu for American viewers, with a new episode every Monday, this is a good time to start watching. Because once you see the first episode of S1, you won't want to stop.
Before anyone gets bent out of shape, let me quickly say that Misfits bears little resemblance to Skins beyond the fact that it's a teen ensemble drama with a similar snarky tone and penchant for the "strong language and sexual situations" that require a promise that you're »

Supernatural-flavored and fantasy-tinged programming continues to flood our TV screens, which is no surprise, given the success of shows like "True Blood" and "The Vampire Diaries."
Yet what's going on in popular culture is more than a mere frenzy for bloodsuckers. "Once Upon a Time," "Alphas," the X-Men movies, "The Hunger Games," the great "Fables" graphic-novel series, "Game of Thrones," the Harry Potter films: They all share a common DNA, and those kinds of stories are particularly relevant right now, because they're all about both escape and engagement.
The four shows that I'll discuss below -- "Misfits," "The Fades," "Being Human" and "Lost Girl" -- all allow viewers to escape into a different reality and imagine what it would be like to have special powers or a heroic destiny. In these difficult times, who wouldn't want to be able to see into the future or change the past? Rather than worrying about paying bills, »

Misfits: Series 3
Stars: Iwan Rheon, Lauren Socha, Nathan Stewart-Jarett, Antonia Thomas | Created by Howard Overman
After series two of Misfits ended it had a lot to prove, not only to itself in a way but to the audience. With the loss of Robert Sheehan as Nathan it was losing one of its best characters, to some he was most definitely the best and ending series two the way it did with almost a reboot of the whole super hero theme it left a lot of doors wide open.
After the online short episode that said goodbye to Nathan series three started off quite strong with the new addition of Rudy, the almost arrogant woman chaser who thinks himself god’s gift to all women. He’s arguably a lot like Nathan, just funny in a different way. We are introduced to him in an episode that pretty much looks »
