New York — Billy Porter, who plays a fierce drag queen in "Kinky Boots," has strutted off with the Tony Award for best actor in a musical.
Porter, the 1992 winner of "Star Search," has amassed several Broadway credits, including "Miss Saigon," "Grease" and "Smokey Joe's Cafe." This was his first nomination.
"Kinky Boots" is based on a real-life shoe factory that struggles until it finds new life in drag footwear. It has songs by Cyndi Lauper and a story by Harvey Fierstein, but Porter's role as a man tormented by disappointing his father is the show's soul.
Porter beat out Bertie Carvel from "Matilda the Musical," Santino Fontana of "Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella," Rob McClure from "Chaplin," and his "Kinky Boots" co-star Stark Sands. »

The only sure shot going into the 67th Annual Tony Awards on Sunday (June 9) is Neil Patrick Harris hosting for a fourth time.
"He understands Broadway and television, and Broadway and television come together one time a year," says Glenn Weiss, director and co-producer of the Tonys.
Though Harris was suspended upside down when "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" was a contender in 2012, he's not going to pull similar stunts this time.
"I never find it a successful move when an awards show host dons different ridiculous outfits," Harris tells Zap2it. "As a viewer, I never feel it is funny, and I just think it is difficult for the host. It is a lot of work for not a lot of accolades. You end up with silly pictures of yourself in the trades.
"The job of hosting an awards show like the Tonys is to be the ringmaster and barker, »

Smith Magazine’s Six-Word Memoir Project has creeped its way into Tony Awards land, with some hilarious results. Nominees for this Sunday night’s Tony Awards (airing on CBS beginning at 8 p.m. Et) had to express their gratitude, best wishes, and other emotions in six words, and the magazine’s Facebook page has them in a gallery for perusal. Most amusing of all is how many nominees either exceed or don’t quite reach six words. (Ahem, Courtney B. Vance, Hal Luftig, and Bertie Carvel- — though the latter freely admits his rascally deed). And Holland Taylor slips one last word in, »

"It's kind of an unusual year in that it appears to be an actual race...there's no clear front-runner. Like in the year of 'The Book of Mormon' or the year of 'The Producers,' it was sort of clear that they were the one and only front-runners," said Gordon Cox of Variety. "This year, I think going into the season a lot of people thought 'Matilda' given the strength and critical praise for it would »

New York — The great comedian W.C. Fields is credited with the line, "Never work with children or animals." He would have had trouble on Broadway this season.
There were kids at every turn – "Motown: The Musical," "Kinky Boots," "Annie," "Matilda the Musical," "A Christmas Story, the Musical" and "Pippin." And animals? Dogs in "Annie," "Pippin" and "A Christmas Story, the Musical," a cat in "Breakfast at Tiffany's," a dead crow in "Macbeth" and even a live vulture in "The Testament of Mary."
But now that it's Tony Awards time, it's the moment for the adults to shine. No kids or pets made it through the nomination process, so only grown-ups will emerge victorious Sunday night.

New York — While all haircuts are important, the one Billy Porter got late last week was even more critical: It was his last trim before Sunday's Tony Awards.
"I just need a trim," he tells stylist Valjean Guerra, crunching his hair with both hands to show the textured look he hopes to maintain. "I want to keep the same shape."
Porter, nominated for best actor in a musical for his role as a drag queen in "Kinky Boots," then settled into a leather chair in a chic Harlem salon for an hour of pampering before a cast album party and another grueling show.
It was nine days before the Tonys – the perfect amount of time to wash and trim what he calls his "chunky thing." If done too close to the awards, his haircut might look forced.

Despite a Broadway season that saw a 6-percent dip in attendance, theater fans still have cause for celebration at this Sunday’s Tony Awards. There’s a contest heating up for Best Musical, pitting the “revolting” children of Matilda against the fabulous drag queens of Kinky Boots.

New York — The Cyndi Lauper-scored "Kinky Boots" has earned a leading 13 Tony Award nominations, with the British import "Matilda: The Musical" close behind with 12. Tom Hanks, making his Broadway debut, earned a nod as leading man in a play.
"Kinky Boots" is based on the 2005 British movie about a real-life shoe factory that struggles until it finds new life in fetish footwear. Lauper's songs and a story by Harvey Fierstein have made it a crowd-pleaser.
"I walked my dog early this morning so I'd be back in time to listen to the announcement. It's so great. It's so great. I'm done crying a little bit. But I'm still thrilled and a little stunned," Lauper said.
The haul did not match the record number of nominations for a musical, which is 15, set by "The Producers" in 2001 and "Billy Elliot" in 2009. "The Book of Mormon" nabbed 14 Tony nods in 2011.

The 2013 Tony Award nominations were announced this morning by actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson and five-time nominated Broadway regular Sutton Foster.
The musical "Kinky Boots" nabbed the most nominations with a total of 13 Tony nods, making the fetish footwear-themed production this year's leading favorite. Its chief rival -- the kid-friendly "Matilda" -- followed close behind with a respectable 12. In the play category, the "Golden Boy" revival secured the highest number of mentions with a total of eight nominations, while Nora Ephron's "Lucky Guy" starring Tom Hanks earned six.
Big names in the acting nominations department included Hanks, Nathan Lane, Laurie Metcalf and Cicely Tyson. Notably missing were Bette Midler, Jessica Chastain, Scarlett Johansson and Alec Baldwin, just a handful of celebrities who graced the Broadway stage this season but were snubbed when it came to the Tony announcements.
