Thankful For Some Tasty New Rock Music!

21 November 2012 8:37 AM, PST | | See recent CultureCatch news »

Happy Thanksgiving. It's been a terrific month for mining new music. I caught an advance screening of Led Zeppelin's new concert movie at MoMA (and their press conference), discovered what may be my favorite album of the year, and found inspiring young musicians sharing their chops and muses with the world. With the holidays around the corner, here are some early suggestions for music very much worth sharing with friends, lovers, bosses, and family.

"You're So Great / It's All Right, Ma" Wendy James You're So Great E.P. (Cobraside)

If Brit-born/NYC-based Ms. James's claim-to-fame-band Transvision Vamp was a tad too sugar-pop coated for your New Yawk punk rawk palette, not to worry. Thanks to guitarist James Williamson (Iggy Pop Stooge) and drummer James Sclavunos (Nick Cave alumnus), she's found some downtown 'tude. The A-side is a fun retro Ramones-style punk ditty, but it's the flip-side Grinderman-grind Dylan cover where it all comes together. »

Led Zeppelin: 'There was a swagger – we knew we were good'

12 October 2012 1:59 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The film Celebration Day captures Led Zeppelin onstage in all their glory in 2007. The band discuss their musical legacy, reputation for excess – and why they will never reunite again

The first thing you notice is how close together they are. Led Zeppelin are not scattered around the huge stage of the O2 arena in London like 100m relay runners awaiting the baton, like most bands at this venue. They are huddled within a few feet of each other in the centre of the stage, and they stay that way for most of the two hours or so of Celebration Day, the new movie that captures their one-off return to playing live in December 2007. Jimmy Page might wander off a few feet to hit a guitar pedal, John Paul Jones occasionally sets his bass down to sit at a keyboard, but Robert Plant sings from the heart of the group, just »

2012 Super Bowl Movie Trailers! Did You See Them All? If Not, Here's Your Chance! Which One's Your Favorite?

Okay, for the very first time, I sat down and watch the entire game between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants, why? Because I was anticipating the Madonna half-time show! I think she delivered and showed to the world that she's still the Queen of Pop. Love her as a performer, but as a director? "W.E." is a totally different story!

But I digress.

We're here to talk about the boatload of movie trailers that were supposed to tease us. Were you teased? Which one is your favorite Super Bowl movie trailer?

My heart belonged to "The Avengers" even though the last shot of the trailer looked just like a bunch of people in funny costumes trying to save the world.

My least favorite? Do I really have to endure Jar Jar Binks again in "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" 3D or not?

So without further adieu, »
