Following the recent news of Queen Elizabeth II’s death at age 96, the former monarch’s funeral service is set to take place next Monday, September 19, in Westminster Abbey.
According to BBC News, the Queen will lie in state in Westminster Hall until next week’s funeral service, with mourners having 24/7 access, should they want to offer their condolences. Soldiers will also be stationed there day and night to guard the area.
After the monarch’s death last Thursday, September 8, many news outlets in the United Kingdom began to ditch their original programming for up-to-date coverage on the Royal Family. Meanwhile, U.S.-based reporters were making plans to visit England for their own reporting on the big news.

Florida will count its results relatively quickly; Pennsylvania won’t. President Donald Trump already is saying that it all should be over on November 3, raising fears that if not he’ll declare victory early, or insist that the process is rigged.
Networks are grappling with a potentially complicated, long-drawn out Election Night, the possibility that no winner will be known and even that the process will extend for days or even weeks. They have been rehearsing all sorts of different scenarios, but more than anything insist that they are proceeding with a sense of caution.
“We want to make sure that our viewers understand that just because it takes longer to count the ballots, the mail in ballots in particular, that doesn’t mean anything is wrong,” said Sam Feist, CNN’s Washington bureau chief and senior vice president. “If it takes a day or two to know who the winner is,...

ABC News will elevate Derek Medina to executive vice president, giving him oversight of many of the Walt Disney unit’s business operations and freeing president James Goldston to devote some of his time to broader strategies.
“He will be a key partner for me in running our business who will manage our operational efforts and growth strategies and work with me and all our leaders on advancing the culture,” said Goldston in a prepared statement. The heads of marketing, global newsgathering operations, news administration, news practices and non-fiction production will report to Medina.
HIs ascension reflects the absence of a designated second-in-command executive at ABC News in recent years. Some of those duties had been taken up by Barbara Fedida, a former senior vice president who left ABC News earlier this year, and Tom Cibrowski, a former senior vice president who left in 2018 to run Disney-owned ABC station Kgo in San Francisco.

When Joe Biden and Kamala Harris wrapped up their first appearance as the Democratic ticket this past week to the blaring sounds of Curtis Mayfield’s Move On Up, they were joined by their spouses and each waved … to no one in particular, just a large TV audience. In that Wilmington high school gymnasium were no cheering crowds or placard-holding rallygoers, just them, some campaign staffers and members of the media. It is a preview of what is to come next week, as Democrats embark on a convention like no other. Speaker after speaker will appear in similarly socially distanced surroundings, with no arena to applaud, no delegates in funny hats, no big balloon drop and surely less spontaneity. Some speakers, like Michelle Obama, already have recorded their remarks, according to sources. And while the nominees will go live from Wilmington, De and others will appear at “message-specific” locations across the country,...

Andrea Mitchell almost drowned in balloons when she covered the 2008 Republican National Convention, and was forced to swat them away as she tried to tell MSNBC viewers what was taking place on the ground.
In 2020, the longtime NBC News and MSNBC correspondent will have plenty of air.
Fewer TV journalists will be on the ground at either the Milwaukee site previously selected for the Democratic National Convention or the Jacksonville or Charlotte venues Republicans had chosen to televise their selection process. Mitchell realizes the viewing public is likely to miss some spectacle – and so will the journalists, who were often put through their paces in various arenas and amphitheaters before the TV cameras went on. Mitchell recalls having to get hold of a seating chart and do the equivalent of sprints around the areas reserved for various state delegations so she could practice getting from one place to another while talking to TV audiences.

Networks Plot Coverage Of Scaled-Back Political Conventions: “We Have Never Seen Anything Like This”
When Democrats begin their national convention just over two weeks from now, it’ll be a test for the broadcast and cable networks: How to cover an event that will be like no other, where the celebratory atmosphere and masses of people instead will be a more sober, controlled environment that is heavily virtual.
Gone are the crowds, the sky booths, the giant balloon drops and perhaps even the chance of any unexpected moments of drama.
What is likely to unfold is coverage of remote speeches from around the country, with a heavy mix of analysis and commentary from anchors, pundits, historians and correspondents.
“We have never seen anything like this with the conventions,” Judy Woodruff of PBS NewsHour told reporters this past week. “It is not going to be a real convention. It is going to be a program or programs they produce.”

ABC News hopes to follow as Elon Musk boldly goes, perhaps, where no space-travel entrepreneur has gone before.
The Walt Disney-owned news unit intends to cover the coming joint mission between Nasa and Elon Musk’s SpaceX that is expected to send two astronauts, Bob Behnken and Douglas G. Hurley, to the International Space Station on a spacecraft designed by Musk’s company. A two-hour special report, “Launch America: Mission to Space Live,” will air at 3 p.m. eastern on May 27 on the National Geographic cable network while streaming on ABC News Live, the ABC News streaming-video operation. ABC News will air a special report on the ABC broadcast network moments before launch that will no doubt call attention to the longer-form program.
“This is the perfect moment to remind viewers everywhere about the power of the human spirit and how science is leading the way forward,” said Geoff Daniels,...

ABC News spends heavily on top anchors like George Stephanopoulos and David Muir. Now it’s investing in the studio that houses so many of them.
Just in time for three hours of “Super Tuesday” coverage, the Disney-owned news outlet is unveiling a massive 5,500 foot production space in the heart of its New York City headquarters that will give news programs like “World News Tonight,” “Nightline” and “This Week” all sorts of modern-day capabilities that could prove important in weeks to come. The overhaul, which features two massive video walls that can be moved, the potential to use augmented-reality images as well as a high-resolution video floor, marks the biggest re-do of the studio known as TV3 since it was built for Peter Jennings’ evening news broadcast in 1986.
In a different era, the news studio mattered more to the camera personnel and control-room producers than it did to viewers. Anchors...

There's one thing the highly competitive broadcast news anchors and producers responsible for covering the midterm elections can agree on: the stakes almost couldn't be higher, both for politicians and the television networks that cover them.
"These are the events that define a news division," says Marc Burstein, ABC News senior executive producer. "It is the Super Bowl of our business."
Interest in the elections has already seemingly exceeded broadcasters' initial expectations: ABC News had always planned to begin coverage at 8 p.m. on the East Coast, but both NBC News and CBS ...

Marc Burstein has been covering elections since 1998. Now the ABC News executive is gearing up for what he believes will be an event of seismic proportions.
The 2018 midterm elections on Nov. 6 were always going to be contentious, says Burstein, ABC News senior executive producer of special events, but in the wake of the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, Republican and Democratic voters are energized in ways that no one had previously anticipated.
“I think this is absolutely the biggest midterm election in my time — and maybe a generation,” says Burstein. “We are treating this as if it were a presidential election.”
There’s good reason to pull out all the stops. Viewership is likely to be intense, just as it was for the news networks’ coverage of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s September hearing of testimony from then-Supreme Court nominee Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, the...

ABC News will occupy some of the best real estate in America on Election Night, as its Times Square set is practically equidistant to both campaign headquarters. Marc Burstein, the network’s executive producer of special events, plans to take advantage of ABC’s location by incorporating The Crossroads of the World with the network’s coverage. “I expect Times Square itself to be filled with people. We have such a unique vantage point,” Burstein said. “We’ll have two candidates, both in New York, within 10 blocks on either side of us … There will be a lot of crowd just in between.
