Digital Vistas, Stone Wardrobes: Alexander Zeldovich’s "Target"

  • MUBI
Mubi is exclusively showing Alexander Zeldovich's Target (2011) from December 16 - January 14, 2017 in the United States. The natural terrain so revered in the past of Russian art is a largely digital entity in the future of Alexander Zeldovich’s Target, overlaid with megacities and serpentine highways and casually picked at by supercilious characters. (One of the protagonists contemplates a rare volcanic nugget and sticks it in his breast pocket, as if filching a novelty pen.) The year is 2020, and Moscow is a sleek network of glass compartments, robotic chimes, and Chinese billboards. Describing himself as “the King of the Mountain,” the Minister of Natural Resources (Maksim Sukhanov) has luxury and power and a gorgeous wife (Justine Waddell) purchased at the “bridal fair,” but that’s not enough—youth is the ultimate grail, finally available in a deserted excavation near the Mongolian border, where celestial radiation has a mysterious anti-aging effect on visitors.

'The Boss' Beats 'Batman v Superman' at the Box Office with $23.48M

'The Boss' Beats 'Batman v Superman' at the Box Office with $23.48M
With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice entering its third week at the box office, most expected the superhero adventure to defend its title for the third weekend in a row. The movie faced three newcomers this weekend, Universal's The Boss, Stx Entertainment's Hardcore Henry and Relativity's Before I Wake, none of which were expected to give Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice a run for its money. However, while Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice did manage to slightly overperform in its third weekend, it still couldn't take down The Boss, which just barely won with $23.48 million.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice managed to defend its box office crown last weekend by taking in $51.3 million, although it suffered a massive drop of 69.1% from its record-breaking debut of $166 million. This weekend, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice dropped just 54.3%, but it finished $23.43 million, just $500,000 below The Boss. It's possible

For years video games have clamuored to make the gaming experience more cinematic. Which is now the reason we have games like Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls, The Last of Us, and Until Dawn – games that edge more towards the “interactive adventures” we were promised back in the full-motion video era of gaming (remember that?). But what if it was the other way round? What if films looked to video games for inspiration? Undoubtedly we’d have more movies like Hardcore Henry.

Shot completely from the hero’s perspective, a la Fps video games, Hardcore Henry stars you – the audience. You remember nothing. Mainly because you’ve just been brought back from the dead by your wife (Haley Bennett). She tells you that your name is Henry.

Hardcore Henry Review

Courtesy of Stx Entertainment

In the action thriller Hardcore Henry, a man wakes up in a high-tech lab and is told by a woman in a lab coat he has been brought back to life as a human-robot hybrid. He can’t remember anything but she tells him his name is Henry and she is his wife, slipping a wedding ring on his finger. But as she is preparing to restore his ability to speak, the lab is attacked. Shortly, Henry is running for his life in Moscow and hoping to rescue his wife from the attackers who have taken her.

The twist with this high-octane thriller is that it is shot in first-person point-of-view, where the audience sees through Henry’s eyes as he battles to stay alive using his considerable skills. Since he cannot speak, the viewer is completely immersed in his role, which is shot like a

Exclusive: Lr Talks to Timur Bekmambetov About 'Hardcore Henry', 'Ben-hur' and More

Opening this Friday, April 8 is one of the more innovative action films you’re likely to see anytime soon when Hardcore Henry opens nationwide.

It’s the directorial debut by Ilya Naishuller, a Russian punk rocker-turned-filmmaker who caught the eye of Russia’s most successful filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) with the music video for his band Biting Elbows, and the two of them set out to create something similar for the big screen. (You can watch Ilya’s original video here, but Warning: it’s not really safe for work or for young kids.)

The Hardcore Henry of the title is a man who died but was brought back to life by his wife (Haley Bennett), who is then promptly kidnapped by a powerful warlord named Akan (Danila Kozlovsky) who sends his army of mercenaries to stop Henry from getting her back. Then there’s the mysterious Jimmy (Sharlto Copley

Movie Review – Hardcore Henry (2016)

Hardcore Henry, 2016

Written and Directed by Ilya Naishuller.

Starring Sharlto Copley, Haley Bennett, Danila Kozlovsky, and Tim Roth.

Synopsis:

A first-person action film from the eyes of Henry, who’s resurrected from death with no memory. He must discover his identity and save his wife from a warlord with a plan to bio-engineer soldiers.

Hardcore Henry is a challenging movie to review, primarily due to the fact that while it indisputably is a revolutionary cinematic experience, it is absolutely not for everyone. Yes, it is the world’s first Pov film (let’s be real though, it’s a First Person Shooter video game disguised as a movie) and deserves a glowing amount of praise for all of the dangerously tricky stunt-work involved (it’s a crime that the movie doesn’t acknowledge whoever plays Henry as an actual credited actor), the solid cinematography and editing capturing the mayhem from a GoPro camera,

Video Interview: Director Ilya Naishuller, Co-Star Sharlto Copley & Producer Timur Bekmambetov Talk Hardcore Henry

Probably one of the coolest movies I had the pleasure of experiencing at the 2016 SXSW Film Festival was Ilya Naishuller’s Hardcore Henry, the violently frenetic actioner that puts you, the viewer, squarely into the mix of all the insanity with its first-person Pov. Produced by the always forward-thinking Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Unfriended), the film stars Haley Bennett (The Equalizer), Danila Kozlovsky, Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs), and Sharlto Copley (District 9), who also became a huge part of the process in getting Hardcore Henry successfully made.

At a recent press day for the film, Daily Dead had the chance to speak with Bekmambetov, Copley and Naishuller about their experiences working together on Hardcore Henry. The trio discussed the difficulties of telling the story via an action-driven vision, the challenge of sustaining the Pov format, collaborating on the project, and how Hardcore Henry pushed their limits as a collective filmmaking unit.

Can 'The Boss' Beat 'Batman v Superman' at the Box Office?

Can 'The Boss' Beat 'Batman v Superman' at the Box Office?
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice managed to defend its box office crown last weekend by taking in $51.3 million, although it suffered a massive drop of 69.1% from its record-breaking debut of $166 million. That second-frame decrease was amongst the biggest ever for any superhero movie. And while it will surely suffer another big drop this weekend, it should still make enough to take down three newcomers, Universal's The Boss, Stx Entertainment's Hardcore Henry and Relativity's Before I Wake. However, this may likely be the last weekend Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice remains on top.

We're guessing that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice suffers another big drop of 60%, which would put its third weekend tally at $20.5 million. As for the newcomers, Pro.BoxOffice.com projects that The Boss will earn $17.5 million, which should be good for second place, followed by holdover Zootopia in third place with $14.4 million and Hardcore Henry
