‘Message From The King’ Trailer: Chadwick Boseman Wants Revenge

25 July 2017 1:29 PM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

A movie that didn’t really make much of a wave at Tiff last year, “Message From The King” (our review) is now destined to live in the corners of Netflix you probably don’t venture into very often. It’s a shame because Chadwick Boseman is apparently pretty good in the film, but perhaps his status as Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will help draw some eyes to the picture.

“Dunkirk” aside, deep summer looks like a fallow season for major films — but appearances are deceiving. This is perhaps their most-essential moment on the movie calendar, as it’s when distributors huddle, haggle, and negotiate to determine which movies will head for the almighty awards-season launch festivals of Venice, Telluride, Toronto, and New York.

From the festivals’ perspectives, they’re vying for the starriest red-carpet gala world premieres. (The exception is Telluride, which doesn’t have to vie; it gets to cherry pick its impeccably curated four-day Labor Day Weekend selection in secret.) Ahead of next week’s rollout of announcements, we called around for intel on what we can expect to see.

Michelle Pfeiffer, Laurence Fishburne among cast additions to upcoming tentpoles.

Once again Marvel Studios ruled the film panels at Comic-Con, thrilling Hall H attendees with a star-studded, banter-filled finale on Saturday evening.

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige wasted little time firing off a volley of casting news: Michelle Pfeiffer has joined Ant-Man And The Wasp as Janet Van Dyne – mother to Evangeline Lilly’s The Wasp and wife of Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym. In another big piece of casting, Laurence Fishburne is on board as scientist Bill Foster.

Randall Park will play Agent Jimmy Woo, Hannah John-Kamen is Ghost, and previously announced Walter Goggins Jr was confirmed on the roster.

Who was happier to see new “Black Panther” footage at San Diego Comic-Con: The fans or the cast?

The moderator of Marvel’s panel on Saturday, Chris Hardwick, informed the crowd that the stars had just seen the fresh film footage for the first time as well. Basically, it was loud.

Director Ryan Coogler introduced the footage, which was for the Comic-Con crowd’s eyes only, following a brief Q&A with a long lineup of cast members, including Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis.

Newswire: T’Challa’s suit got an upgrade in new Black Panther footage that Marvel won’t show us

A lot of Captain America: Civil War involved laying the groundwork for the Black Panther movie, and during its Comic-Con panel today, Marvel unsurprisingly revealed that Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther will actually take place just after the events of Civil War—meaning T’Challa’s father has just been killed and Bucky Barnes has just been released into his custody and re-frozen until people can figure out how to stop him from turning into a brainwashed murder machine again. Other than that, Marvel offered some character details on Black Panther’s supporting cast, but the biggest part of the panel was some secret footage that apparently won’t be released online (a rarity at this year’s Comic-Con).

Luckily, Marvel can’t stop anyone from describing what it entailed. The clip reportedly opened with Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa arriving at a casino of some sort with Lupita Nyong »
