'American Idol' finalists dominate Billboard charts

22 December 2009 9:27 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Look no further than Billboard's year-end and decade-end charts to see how influential "American Idol" has been on the music landscape.

Fifteen different Idols appeared on decade-end lists at Billboard, including all "American Idol" winners (except Kris Allen, who was not eligible). The following Idols landed on at least one decade-end list: Clay Aiken, David Archuleta, Fantasia Barrino, Kelly Clarkson, David Cook, Chris Daughtry, Josh Gracin, Taylor Hicks, Jennifer Hudson, Kimberley Locke, Mandisa, Jordin Sparks, Ruben Studdard, Carrie Underwood and Elliott Yamin.

On the prestigious Artists of the Decade chart, Clarkson (No. 14), Underwood (No. 50) and Daughtry (No. 90) all made appearances. All three also appeared on Top 200 Albums of the Decade -- Underwood twice at No. 14 ("Some Hearts") and No. 132 ("Carnival Ride"), Clarkson at No. 29 with "Breakaway" and Daughtry at No. 48 with "Daughtry." Clay Aiken joined them with "Measure of a Man" at No. 170.

Trailer – “Fantasia For Real” (Reality TV)

22 December 2009 7:53 AM, PST | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

Ya know… next to Bet, VH1 certainly has done its share to exploit “black-themed” content and black audiences with their library of reality TV show minstrelsy (calling Flavor Flav and company); here’s something new to add to its canon – Fantasia For Real. Fantasia Barrino’s new VH1 reality show… just as you requested, I’m sure.

It doesn’t quite resemble the likes of Flavor Of Love, or I Love New York, or For Da Love Of Ray J, or… any of the countless others, so I don’t know if I’d lump it up with those. However, I have no plans to watch this… but maybe You do. The show debuts on VH1 in January. Trailer below:

Adam Lambert song snippets: Let's rank a dozen of 'em from most awesome to not-quite-as-aweome!

11 November 2009 10:36 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

I've added a new subset to my overwhelming American Idol addiction, and it focuses solely on the contestants of season 8! Indeed, thanks to the vocal firepower of Kris Allen, Adam Lambert, and Allison Iraheta (not to mention Anoop Desai, #signmattgiraud, Mishavonna Henson, and Deanna Brown), there's so much news and music and awesomeness making its way to the Internet that some days I barely have time to get out of my pajamas. (For the record, I type this clad in Old Navy sleep bottoms and a promotional jersey I received from the publicist for Fox's Brothers, a show I have never seen. »

Kris Allen's 'Live Like We're Dying' Video Stands Way Above Other 'Idol' Clips

6 November 2009 2:40 PM, PST | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

"American Idol" winner Kris Allen debuted his first music video today (although he's been the unwilling star of several hilarious/creepy fan-made Kradam tribute clips) and while "Live Like We're Dying" probably won't win any Moonmen at next year's VMAs, it's a big, bold and awesomely expensive-looking first taste of what fans can expect from Kris Allen 2.0. He's no longer "just" an "Idol" winner. He's a musician in his own right, and the video sets him up as a worthy colleague to similarly-minded artists like the Fray, OneRepublic and John Mayer.

The video starts in near-darkness, but as the clip progresses (and as he plays more instruments), the sun slowly rises until the final moments, when a new day has officially dawned. Call me sentimental (and, okay, a crazy fan), but this video perfectly mirrors Kris' "Idol" journey in a deliciously subtle way. He began as a guy with little exposure during the early episodes, »

Ellen DeGeneres as the fourth judge: Is this the end of 'American Idol' as we know it?

10 September 2009 5:55 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Chalk me up as one of those people who greeted the news that Ellen DeGeneres is joining the judging panel for season 9 of American Idol with the sudden urge to drive a fork into my thigh and wake up from a strange and horrible nightmare. (Side note: We all do dream about Idol on a regular basis, right? Right.) Now don't get me wrong. I adore Ellen DeGeneres. As a comedian, that is. I've seen her live in concert twice. I watched every episode of The Ellen Show (her short-lived 2001 series with Cloris Leachman, not to be confused with the groundbreaking sitcom Ellen, which I also loved). Heck, I'd even tune in to something as hein as the People's Choice Awards if they brought her in as host. But as a permanent replacement for Paula Abdul as the fourth judge on my very most favorite television show? Can I get »

Phoning Fantasia

26 August 2009 5:30 PM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Some people wait a lifetime for a moment like this -- which is precisely the problem. Blake Lewis, the sixth season runner-up on American Idol, has waited to pay off his $120,000 tax lien, and now he's in trouble. The 28-year-old singer owes the money from 2007, the year of his Idol run, when he bought a $1.2 million estate north of Seattle. Release that sophomore album, fair hat-wearer! Now the man's in dubious company with Ruben Studdard and Fantasia Barrino, two other Idol vets with less-than-Cowellian bank accounts. Perhaps he'll find a cunning way to beat debt, but ultimately, it's the votes (of the elusive tween beatbox fanatic demo) that count. DetNews »

Michael Jackson's Screen Legacy, From 'The Wiz' To 'The Simpsons'

Michael Jackson's talent as an entertainer was arguably beyond comparison, yet his music was only the starting point for a career that spanned multiple mediums: film, television (including a Jackson 5 cartoon), video games, theme-park attractions and more. While his appearances in films were relatively few and far between, his magnetism translated easily to the big screen.

Jackson's first major film came in 1978, with director Sidney Lumet's "The Wiz." In the musical fantasy, adapted from L. Frank Baum's "The Wizard of Oz," Jackson starred as the Scarecrow alongside Diana Ross' Dorothy, Nipsey Russell's Tinman and Ted Ross' Lion. "The Wiz" is an urban fairy tale set in »

Parsing Prince’s Yellow Outfit At The Apollo Theater Gala

The 75th Anniversary Gala for the Apollo Theater in New York brought together Mariah Carey, Jamie Foxx, Steve Harvey, Fantasia Barrino, Bill Cosby, Quincy Jones and — perhaps most notably — Prince, who appeared on stage to help induct a handful of legendary divas into the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame. Minneapolis’ favorite son has kept his wardrobe relatively tame over the last few years, but last night he appeared in an outfit so yellow he would have been mistaken for Big Bird if he wasn’t so diminutive. There’s even more than meets the eye in this particular ensemble, so let’s take a look at the various components:

Kris Allen goes from 'Idol' champ to NBA Finals

New York (AP) — "American Idol" winner Kris Allen is taking part in a fiercely contested competition watched by millions, but this time, he'll have nothing to do with the outcome. Allen is scheduled to sing the national anthem Sunday before Game 2 of the National Basketball Association finals on ABC. The Los Angeles Lakers have a 1-0 lead over the Orlando Magic. Having "American Idol" winners sing during the basketball championship series has become something of a tradition. Every winner has done it, with the exception of Fantasia. Susan Boyle = Adam Lambert (the real winners?)

31 May 2009 4:28 PM, PDT | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

How is it possible, you wonder, that Susan Boyle lost "Britain's Got Talent" just days after Adam Lambert lost "American Idol"? There may be a harsh reality behind both reality TV shows that got it wrong. Boyle and Lambert may have lost public contests because of their private lives. Many observers believe Boyle and Lambert lost because they were so heavily favored to win. Thus voters picked opponents because they wanted their votes to have maximum effect. But that didn't stop earlier "American Idol" front-runners Fantasia Barrino, Taylor Hicks and Carrie Underwood from prevailing. Personally, I think the results of these contests reveal more about the prejudices of the voters than they do about the real talent of contestants. In Lambert's case, he obviously had greater artistic chops than Kris Allen, just like Clay Aiken was so clearly superior to Ruben Studdard, but both lost as whispers that they might be gay became deafening. »

Another American Idol Finale Shocker: Not the Lowest Rated!

21 May 2009 10:40 AM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

It was a squeaker, but American Idol did it: It avoided posting its least-watched finale of the modern Idol era. Instead, the show tied its least-watched finale of the modern Idol era. Which, in 2009, is still a feat. An estimated 28.84 million, on average, tuned in last night's Kris Allen coronation, per preliminary Nielsen data. Final numbers weren't expected to give Idol much of a boost since Nielsen has already factored in time zone differences and the show's seven-minute overrun into the 10 p.m. hour. If the estimate holds, last night's Idol will be tied with 2004's Fantasia finale for next-to-last place in the annals of Idol finales.  Some more finale »
