It’s the season when the leaves start to turn crimson—but here at Fangoria Radio, we’re way ahead of them. Tonight’s show, hosted by Debbie Rochon, Dee Snider and Fango editor Tony Timpone (airing live on Sirius Xm Stars satellite radio, Sirius channel 108/Xm channel 139, from 10 p.m.-1 a.m. Est, with a repeat immediately thereafter), will be visited by a host of bloodshedders, among them the reigning king of serial killers—even if he did die two sequels ago:

Last night, Dark Delicacies in Burbank, California celebrated the release of both Trick 'R Treat and The Hills Run Red with a special in-store signing. DVD's and CD soundtracks were available for both. (A graphic novel and Blu-Ray for Trick 'R Treat) In attendance for The Hills Run Red was director Dave Parker, star Tad Hilgenbrink, composer Frederik Wiedmann and producer Robert Burnett. A few months back, I reviewed a direct to DVD horror release called The Last Resort. Stuck for words about the film’s confusing plot and shaky logic, I started pontificating about the differences between this generation’s direct-to-dvd horror releases and their spiritual heirs, the low-budget sci-fi films of the fifties. I commented that something sincere had been lost between now and then, and now, with The Hills Run Red, I have had that idea exemplified in a way far more eloquent than I stated then. It’s not that the movie is especially good, because it isn’t, but in its aspirations towards wit and its slavish devotion to the slasher films of yesteryear, it reveals more about the gradual shift in horror’s values than an essay or review probably ever could.

Four months ago I attended an advance screening of The Hills Run Red, a Warner Premier straight-to-dvd film about a group of college kids in search of a cult director and his long-lost horror film of the same name. Long story short, I really didn't like it, but I found myself in the minority, so in the interest of fairness, I spent the next couple of months asking colleagues who saw it why they seemed to like it so much.
Because I never really got an answer that satisfied my lingering questions and criticisms, I decided to watch it again. And while the film's premise - obsessive horror geeks rediscovering a lost horror classic that was banished for being too intense - is a really, really terrific one, director Dave Parker's latest effort is not equal to that premise. We've all heard the story of the lost film; that old horror classic that mysteriously and tragically falls through the cracks never to be seen again. A handful of them, such as the often bereaved London After Midnight, go on to attain a legendary status that was likely only made possible by their very absence. But what if, what if, some old forgotten film did carry the whisper of something dark, something real, something fat, deadly, and wanting its mother. Some mysteries are best left sleeping.
Horror geek Tyler (Tad Hilgenbrink) has deaf ears for any such advice. The Hills Run Red (just out on DVD from Warner Premiere) is about the quest to track down a lost horror film of the same title, one supposedly so shocking that our protagonist is obsessed with witnessing its full, terrible vision. And yet this Hills has been issued in an R-rated cut only, with references on the audio commentary to scenes its creators wanted to include, but were too gruesome. Irony?
Nevertheless, there’s enough on view in Hills Run Red to push that R to its limits, and to justify its title. Director Dave Parker just gave us the word that the official website for his new shocker The Hills Run Red is now live. Set for special-edition DVD release from Warner Home Video September 29, the David J. Schow-scripted movie follows a quartet of young people whose search for the origins of a legendary lost fright film leads them into dangerous and bloody territory.
The site, which you can see here, features the trailer and other video clips, photos, downloads and a blog by Tyler, the movie’s protagonist (played by Tad Hilgenbrink). Hollywood is a gluttonous beast, known for chewing up talent, processing it through her labyrinthine digestive track and depositing said talent, devoid of confidence, on her tarnished boulevards.
