The live musical production of the musical “Rent” will air Sunday, Jan. 27, 2019 on Fox. More details and casting will be announced later. Set in New York City’s East Village, “Rent” tells the story of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams during a time of great social and political turmoil. ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ Taps ‘Blair Witch’ Director Adam Wingard
The Guest” director Adam Wingard has been tapped to take the reigns of “Godzilla vs. Kong.”

Terry Rossio is writing the film — a part of Legendary and Warner Bros.’ “MonsterVerse.” The announcement comes on the heels of “Kong: Skull Island” scoring at the box office with $565.6 million worldwide. The studios are prepping another sequel, “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” with Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, and Vera Farmiga on board to star.

As the title suggests, the film will pit the two massive monsters against each other. It’s still unknown at this time whether the stars of either “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” or “Skull Island” will be reprising their roles in “Godzilla vs. Kong.”

“Godzilla vs. Kong” roars into theaters on May 22, 2020.

‘Hap and Leonard’ Renewed for Season 3 on SundanceTV
Hap and Leonard” has been renewed for Season 3 on SundanceTV, Variety has learned.

The series is based on the celebrated book series of the same name by Joe R. Lansdale, and follows best friends Hap Collins (James Purefoy), an East Texas white guy with a weakness for Southern women, and Leonard Pine (Michael Kenneth Williams), a gay, black Vietnam vet with a hot temper. The show is currently SundanceTV’s highest-rated original series, and will return for six episodes in 2018.

The third season of “Hap and Leonard,” will take inspiration from “The Two-Bear Mambo,” the third installment of Lansdale’s book series. Season one was inspired by the first “Hap and Leonard” novel “Savage Season,” and season two from “Mucho Mojo,” the second book in the series.

‘Hobo With a Shotgun’ Director Jason Eisener Set for Thriller With Wes Ball (Exclusive)
Hobo With a Shotgun” Director Jason Eisener will direct an untitled thriller for Fox with Wes Ball’s Oddball Entertainment, Joe Hartwick, Jr., and Jeremy Platt’s Plattform producing.

The film is inspired by Eisener’s “One Last Dive” short film, which he directed and co-wrote with Rob Cotterill and John Davies. The short centered on a diver investigating an underwater crime scene but remaining details about the feature film have yet to be released. Besides directing Rutger Hauer in 2011’s “Hobo with a Shotgun,” Eisener’s credits include “V/H/S 2” and “The ABCs of Death.”

Lewaa Nasserdeen (“The Real O’Neals,” “The Goldbergs”) is writing the script. Jason Young is overseeing the project for the studio.

‘Hap and Leonard’ Renewed for Season 2 at SundanceTV
SundanceTV has renewed comedic noir series “Hap and Leonard” for Season 2, the network announced Tuesday.

Starring James Purefoy and Michael Kenneth Williams, the second season will consist of six episodes scheduled to debut in 2017. John Wirth (“Hell on Wheels,” “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles”) will join the project as showrunner and executive producer for Season 2.

The series is based on the novels by Joe R. Lansdale and was developed by Jim Mickle and Nick Damici. The second season will take inspiration from “Mucho Mojo,” the second installment of Lansdale’s the book series.

"Hap and Leonard" Renewed For Season 2

SundanceTV has renewed its swamp-set, six-episode drama TV series "Hap and Leonard" for a second season following its launch in March.

Based on Joe R. Lansdale's books, James Purefoy and Michael K. Williams star as two mismatched best friends who take part in a get-rich-quick scheme that quickly goes awry.

Jim Mickle and Nick Damici ("Cold in July") penned the series which Mickle directed while Nick Schumaker and Jeremy Platt are executive producing. An episode count, or expected premiere date for season two, has not yet been announced.

Netflix is in final negotiations to pick up Adam Wingard’s “Death Note,” continuing to bolster its feature film slate.

The pic stars “Paper Towns” actor Nat Wolff and Margaret Qualley and was originally at Warner Bros. before being put into turnaround at the studio.

Stx and Lionsgate were among the other studios looking at the property, but Netflix is poised to come out on top with a June start date being eyed for production. While the deal is not expected to reach the same price levels as those for “War Machine” or “Bright,” the price should fall in the $40 million-$50 million range.

Based on the Japanese Manga series, Wolff plays a student who discovers a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone simply by writing the victim’s name. A cat-and-mouse game ensues when he’s tracked by a reclusive police officer.

Exclusive: The Witch exec readies horror from writer-directors Jeremy Gillespie and Steve Konstanski.

UK sales outfit Salt will be looking to ink further deals at Afm on horror The Void, from genre writer-directors Jeremy Gillespie and Steve Konstanski (The ABCs of Death 2).

Shoot is due to get underway in Canada on Nov 17 on the horror in which a lone police officer and a group of staff band together to fortify themselves within the walls of an isolated hospital which is under threat from a violent cult.

As the group prepares for the fight of their lives they discover the real terror is already inside.

Xyz and CAA will handle North American deals.

Producers are Casey Walker of Cave Painting Pictures and Jonathan Bronfman (The Witch) of JoBro Productions. Executive producers are Ross Dinerstein (The Nightmare), Jeremy Platt, Zach Hagen and Todd Brown.

Christina Hendricks has been cast in “Hap and Leonard,” SundanceTV’s upcoming scripted series based on the characters in author Joe Lansdale’s novels, novellas and short stories.

The series centers on friends Hap Collins, a white working-class ex-con played by James Purefoy, and Leonard Pine, an openly gay, black Vietnam vet with anger issues played by Michael Kenneth Williams. Together, the duo fight to stay on the right side of the law in 1980s East Texas. Hendricks will play Hap’s ex-wife Trudy, who resurfaces after two years to make Hap an offer he can’t refuse.

Hap and Leonard’s” six one-hour episodes will air in early 2016 on SundanceTV. It is created by director-writer Jim Mickle and writer Nick Damici and is produced by Sundance Studios. Nick Shumaker and Jeremy Platt exec produce; co-executive producers are Lansdale and Lowell Northrop. Linda Moran is producing. Bill Sage and Jimmi Simpson also star.

‘Cheap Thrills’ Helmer Joins SundanceTV Series ‘Hap And Leonard’
Exclusive: Writer, director, and producer E.L. “Evan” Katz, who won the 2013 SXSW Audience Award with his festival favorite dark comedy Cheap Thrills, has joined Jim Mickle and Nick Damici (Cold In July) as writer and producer on SundanceTV’s original scripted series Hap and Leonard.

Premiering in 2016, the series is adapted from author Joe Lansdale’s Southern noir books about an unlikely pair of best friends and martial arts experts who try to stay on the right side of the law in 1980s East Texas. SundanceTV ordered six one-hour episodes in November. Filming begins this year with Mickle set to direct a number of episodes.

The show marks Katz’s first foray into television after writing, directing, and producing his way up the genre film ranks. He also directed a slick entry in last year’s horror anthology ABCs of Death 2.
