2015 Sundance Predictions: Which Film is the Next Whiplash?

19 November 2014 9:45 AM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

Despite the lottery-esque sounding odds, the U.S Dramatic Competition section which produces the finest American indie specimens such as Frozen RiverWinter’s Bone, Blue ValentineMartha Marcy May MarleneBeasts of the Southern WildFruitvale Station and Whiplash is fairly consistent in terms of quality. Last year’s crop of sixteen have almost all had their theatrical releases with Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter being the last one out of the gates (pegged with an early 2015 release). Last week we individually looked at our top 80 Sundance Film Fest Predictions (you’ll find 30 other titles worth considering in our intro) and below, we’ve split the list into narrative and non-fiction film items and have both identified and color-coded our picks in an AtoZ cheat sheet. You’ll find 2015′s answer to Whiplash located somewhere in the stack below. Click on the individual titles below, for the film’s profile. »

2015 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck’s Mississippi Grind

13 November 2014 9:15 AM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

Technically hitting paydirt in the indie biz with their breakout addiction drama, we could argue that over the course of their four film filmography (television fiction and docu assignments aside) that the writing-directing tandem of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are softening their searing-like stance yet adhering to a contemplative template. Half Nelson (easily among my top ten films of ’06) was followed by Sugar (2008), dramedy It’s Kind of a Funny Story (2010) and in 2015, we can “bet” on a roadtrippin comedy to detail our need to beat the odds. Boden and Fleck are no strangers to Park City, a pair of their shorts landed there prior to their first two features. Mississippi Grind is a blue-chip indie item that originally had Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead but Ben MendelsohnRyan Reynolds take the reigns alongside Analeigh Tipton, Sienna Miller, Alfre Woodard and Concussion thesp Robin Weigert. 2015 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Reed Morano’s Meadowland

13 November 2014 9:00 AM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

A staple of the Sundance Film Festival since Courtney Hunt’s Frozen River in ’08, her Park City premiered filmography as a cinematographer was followed by Little Birds, Shut Up And Play The Hits, For Ellen, Kill Your Darlings, The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete, and last year’s The Skeleton Twins and War Story. Late this summer, Reed Morano took an all-encompassing approach to visual storytelling, taking on double duties as director first, cinematographer second. Olivia Wilde toplines Meadowland and the hard-hitting drama includes the likes of Luke Wilson, John Leguizamo, Elisabeth Moss, Giovanni Ribisi, Juno TempleKevin Corrigan, Scott Mescudi and Ty Simpkins. The ideal kind of auteur theory should be more inclusive. Add cinematographers. Case in point.

2015 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Max Landis’ Me Him Her

13 November 2014 8:45 AM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

For someone who was ultra transparent during production, it’s almost as if Max Landis has placed a self-imposed gag order or the more likely scenario, simply didn’t really need to rush his directing debut in post production when we consider his sizeable workload. Backed by Big Beach Films – the prod co. with a winning formula and streak of Sundance comedies such as Little Miss Sunshine and Safety Not Guaranteed, 2015 should be a banner year for Landis name in the film stratosphere as it’ll include a whopping trio of penned items in Paul McGuigan’s Frankenstein, Nima Nourizadeh’s American Ultra, Paco Cabezas’ Mr. Right and finally, the sexual identity non-labeller comedy Me Him Her (we had on the radar last year) that sounds like a cozy fit for Park City. Worth noting, this features the work of cinematographer Ross Riege (The Kings of Summer).

Elisabeth Moss joins Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett for Dan Rather scandal drama

23 September 2014 10:40 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Though 'Mad Men' comes to an end in April 2015, it's only the beginning for Elisabeth Moss. After successfully transitioning from child actress to respected thespian with her work on "West Wing," her layered, assertive performance as Peggy Olson has turned her into an in-demand, dramatic commodity. Deadline reports that Moss will costar alongside Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett in "Truth," a docudrama chronicling the botched "60 Minutes II" investigation of the "Killian documents." James Vanderbilt ("Zodiac," "White House Down") will write and direct the film, based on Mary Mapes’ 2005 memoir "Truth And Duty: The Press, The President, And The Privilege Of Power" After running four documents purporting George W. Bush's preferential treatment in the National Guard to help the sitting president avoid the Vietnam War draft, CBS, the "60 Minutes" staff, and reporter Dan Rather were left disgraced after the papers turned out to be fakes. Exclusive: Elisabeth Moss is set to join Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett in Truth, the film about the scandal that erupted after Dan Rather reported on 60 Minutes II that George W. Bush had gotten preferential treatment that put him in the Texas Air National Guard to avoid the Vietnam War draft. The ensuing scandal during Bush’s re-election campaign left Rather’s reputation in tatters and his key producer Mary Mapes fired.

James Vanderbilt, the A-list screenwriter behind the first two installments of The Amazing Spider-Man, is making his directorial debut on the pic, which is based on Mapes’ 2005 memoir Truth And Duty: The Press, The President, And The Privilege Of Power. Redford is aboard to play Rather and Blanchett will play Mapes. Moss will play CBS veteran Lucy Scott, now a journalism professor in Dallas, who is brought on board by Mapes as her new associate producer to “run point” on the story controversy. »

Euro-Pudding and Look Books: Takeaways from Day One at Ifp’s Filmmaker Conference

15 September 2014 7:30 AM, PDT | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

After sitting through the majority of the New Narratives presentations on day one of the Filmmaker Conference at Ifp Film Week, my brain is almost too awash with content to compile anything but a listicle. From conversations with cinematographers like Reed Morano and producers like Mynette Louie to an Obvious Child case study and Kevin B. Lee’s mini-keynote, here is a handful of the major takeaways I gleaned from yesterday’s Conference. 1. For co-productions, don’t assume hiring local crew is the cheapest option. Arriving to the Icelandic set of Land Ho!, producers Mynette Louie and Sara Murphy realized they were sharing ground with a slightly larger production: Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar.
