This week's new films

Beginners (15)

(Mike Mills, 2010, Us) Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, Mélanie Laurent. 105 mins

Mills doesn't iron out the hipster-auteur quirks here – a subtitled dog, freeform photomontages, felt-tip illustrations – but he puts them to the service of an authentic drama. McGregor is an La loner whose widowed father (Plummer) came out as gay and enjoyed a few hedonistic years before his death. Not your standard indie baggage, this warm, smartly told story deals with it sincerely, and gets the sweet/sad balance just about right.

Horrible Bosses (15)

(Seth Gordon, 2011, Us) Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis. 98 mins

Clearly aiming for the post-Hangover fratcom market, this sees three guys' plan to off their bosses go awry from the outset, with occasionally amusing, but often crude consequences. Colourful big-name cameos gloss over some political dodginess.

The Big Picture (15)

(Eric Lartigau, 2010, Fra) Romain Duris, Marina Foïs, Niels Arestrup. 115 mins

Duris proves his leading man capabilities amply »

The Violent Kind, 2010.

Directed by Mitchell Altieri and Phil Flores.

Starring Cory Knauf, Taylor Cole, Bret Roberts, Christina Prousalis and Tiffany Shepis.

Synopsis:

One night at a secluded farmhouse deep in the Northern California woods, a small group of hardened young bikers and their girlfriends are tormented when one of the girls becomes savagely possessed and a gang of "Rockabillies" seemingly from the 1950s descends upon them to collect what is growing inside her.

The straight to DVD market is a mystery to me. How does it survive? Who buys these discs of disappointment? Even the covers are a massive warning sign. Yet somehow people buy them. I’ve never once met one of these people and I actually wonder whether they exist or could it be that the studio is hired to come up with a formulaic friendly piece of garbage to stop dust gathering on some of the »

Mendelsohn is in negotiations [2] to play a mechanic who brings Gosling's charcter into the world of bank robbery. Shooting for the film is set to begin late next month in Schenectady, NY. The Event: NBC Cancels TV Series; No Season Two

13 May 2011 2:28 PM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

When The Event was being promoted last summer, the producers made a point of saying that the series would be different from ABC's failed FlashForward series. It turns out there were more unintentional similarities than they would have liked. Like FlashForward, NBC's The Event has been cancelled after one season on the air.

The Event follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter) who's investigating the mysterious disappearance of his girlfriend. He slowly begins to uncover a huge cover-up that's beyond belief. Others in the cast include Sarah Roemer, Laura Innes, Ian Anthony Dale, Scott Patterson, Clifton Collins Jr., Taylor Cole, Lisa Vidal, Bill Smitrovich, Zeljko Ivanek, and Blair Underwood.

The serial drama started out with healthy numbers on September 20th, registering a 3.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 10.88 million viewers. Unfortunately those digits started to fall immediately. The series lost 19% of its demo viewers »

Transformers 3 Star Tops Maxim’s Hot 100

3 May 2011 1:27 PM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

No sooner do we get tired of thumbing through the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue than Maxim gets temperatures rising with their annual Hot 100 issue. Coming to newsstands next week, we learn that model turned actress Rosie Huntington-Whitely has been crowed the top hot babe. She displaces Megan Fox, who tumbles to #17, in this summer’s not-eagerly-awaited Transformers: Dark of the Moon and has become the new It girl (at least this month). Huntingon-Whiteley tells Maxim that being named number one “is a huge honor.  It’s a great title to have for a year and you can have some fun with it, I think.”

The 100 is listed below and since hotness is in the eye of the beholder, we will all have our quibbles with the order, inclusion or absence of our personal favorites. Me, I have issues with many in the top 10 alone.

Our genre is certainly well represented with Rosie, »

‘The Event’ Composer Scott Starrett Discusses Driving this Season’s Action Through Sound

5 April 2011 4:00 PM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

To the average TV viewer the musical score is meant to cue in characters or help build emotion but it can do much more. At WonderCon, we talked with Scott Starrett, the music composer for NBC’s The Event starring Jason Ritter, Sarah Roemer, Larua Innes, Zeljko Ivanek, Blair Underwood, Scott Patterson, Taylor Cole, and Clifton Collins Jr. The Event’s motto is ‘What Will You Believe?’ and takes viewers on a weekly ride full of twists and turns; the score plays a major part in that and gives additional clues in this alien conspiracy thriller. In this interview, Starrett discusses:

• How the score influences mystery and suspense as well as pacing.

• How the score hints who to trust in The Event.

• What to look for as the finale approaches.

• Musical influences and instrument choices.
