Ali Catterall is an award-winning writer, journalist, filmmaker, film critic and editor, whose writing has featured in the Guardian, Time Out, GQ, Film4, Word magazine and the Big Issue, among many others.
In 2001, he co-authored Your Face Here: British Cult Movies Since the Sixties, and in 2018 edited Jane Giles' Scala Cinema 1978-1993 winner of the 2019 Kraszna-Krausz Award - the only award dedicated to books about the moving image. In 2021, he co-authored Kindness (A User's Guide) with Kitty Collins, and is working on a memoir about his bizarre childhood.
His debut film, co-directed with Jane Giles, is Scala!!! Or, the incredibly strange rise and fall of the world's wildest cinema and how it influenced a mixed-up generation of weirdos and misfits - a feature-length documentary produced by the BFI, Channel X and Anti-Worlds, exploring the rise and fall of London's notorious and influential Scala Cinema.
