'Sons Of Liberty': Michael Raymond-James On Paul Revere

27 January 2015 9:29 AM, PST | Access Hollywood | See recent Access Hollywood news »

Michael Raymond-James brought to life one of the biggest moments in the lead up to the American Revolution on Monday night's "Sons of Liberty."

As Paul Revere in the History mini-series, the actor recreated the Midnight Ride. But, Michael told Access Hollywood the real pressure related to recreating the famed historical event (where Revere rode to Lexington, Mass., to warn Samuel Adams and John Hancock that the British were coming to arrest them) had to do with mastering his horse.

Sons of Liberty Is Pretty Good, In Between the Action Scenes

25 January 2015 2:51 PM, PST | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

The ad campaign for Sons of Liberty makes it look like The Avengers in powered wigs. Jason O'Mara is… George Washington! Michael Raymond-James is… Paul Revere! Dean Norris is… Ben Franklin! They face the viewer, heads slightly inclined, glowering joyously: a secret society of early American heroes, fanning out across the Colonies, taking the fight to the Crown. At first this three-part History Channel series, which debuts tonight, seems like it'll live up to its ad campaign, to its detriment, and dumb history down into spectacle and action for action's sake. It gets better and slightly deeper as it goes along, but never to such an extent that you wouldn't rather be re-watching HBO's John Adams, or maybe 1776.   In the prologue, set in 1765, future founding patriot Sam Adams (Ben Barnes) escapes tax assessors who're irked that he's letting his pals take a payment raincheck and leads them on a foot »

TV Review: ‘Sons of Liberty’

22 January 2015 7:15 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The founding fathers receive the “Vikings” treatment in “Sons of Liberty,” a six-hour miniseries that History channel will air over successive nights. Produced by Stephen David Entertainment – best known for heavily re-enacted docu-hybrids, like “The World Wars” – this scripted production is clearly intended to bring history to life, but sometimes at the cost (with apologies to Sam Adams) of feeling a bit too much like a beer commercial. Although generally interesting and handsomely done, the program isn’t without its excesses, and some of the liberties taken here, creatively and historically, have little to do with the price of tea.

Billed as a “dramatic interpretation of events,” “Sons of Liberty” opens in 1765, with Sam Adams (Ben Barnes of “The Chronicles of Narnia”) being sought by British soldiers. Drunk and unshaven, he has run afoul of Massachusetts’ governor for refusing to collect all the taxes the Crown considers its due from his fellow colonists. »
