The band's name is a variation of the name of the gym coach of Lee High School in Jacksonville, Florida, that several of its members attended: Leonard Skinner. Skinner was a very conservative man who would punish anyone who broke the school's strict dress code, which banned long hair and sideburns.
In the mid 1990s, the band featured two guitarists from other Southern rock bands: Hughie Thomasson was the lead guitarist with Outlaws, and Rickey Medlocke was the lead guitarist and vocalist of Blackfoot.
The 2009 album "God & Guns" was their highest-charting album on the Billboard 200 since "Street Survivors" in 1977.

Only rock 'n' roll band with a 13-letter name that doesn't contain any vowels.
