McCallum, Scott team for 'Boy'

23 April 2004 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

SYDNEY -- Australian producer Jane Scott is developing a film based on Vikram Seth's best-selling novel A Suitable Boy, to be co-produced with British theatrical producer Martin McCallum, former managing director and co-chairman of Cameron Mackintosh's U.K. entertainment group. The film marks McCallum's first foray into film production. Scott told the Hollywood Reporter that she and McCallum are in the process of attaching a director to the project, while investors and distributors are yet to be announced. However, she said, "(There's) lots of interest, probably mostly because of the book's high profile." The screenplay is by Englishman John Dryden, who wrote and directed the first dramatization of the 1,500-page novel in 2002 as a much-praised five-part radio series for the BBC. A Suitable Boy, set in India in the early 1950s, is the story of one Indian girl's attempts to find a suitable boy for marriage with the help of her mother. McCallum and Scott aim to go into production in 2005. »
