Deric Olsen was born and raised in southern Alberta and is regarded as
an innovative independent filmmaker. Through his films, Olsen seeks to
enlighten as well as entertain. He brings to the world around him new
ideas and unique, timely stories. His films are intelligent and have an
imaginative visual style.
His present motivation in his films, is in exploring the concept of
borders and boundaries as they relate to identity and character and he
has a number of projects in various stages of development.
An accomplished educator as well, Olsen has connected with many
burgeoning filmmakers through his challenging film and media production
courses and workshops, providing his students opportunities to develop
and express themselves as filmmakers and as artists.
Olsen completed an M.F.A. in Media Production and Studies from the
University of Regina in 2007 and operates Northbound Studios, an
independent film production and distribution company he founded in
1999. He continues to write and do research on a number of film and
media related topics including, genre, authorship, and representation.
Olsen married Aubrey Lynn Davies in 1999 and has 4 children.
