Machinima’s ‘Real Fake History’ Gives Pop Culture The Ken Burns Treatment

As we learned from one of Community’s best ever episodes, Ken Burns’ heralded documentary films are also ripe targets for parody. Now, Machinima is taking aim at Burns’ signature filmmaking style with a series called Real Fake History, a mockumentary that pretends pop culture stories are historical events.

Each episode of Real Fake History dives into a different pop culture franchise. Across ten installments, the series will visit everything from Starship Troopers to Game of Thrones to Mike Tyson’s Punch Out. The first episode, however, treads upon the familiar nerd territory of Star Wars by examining the Battle of Endor. Narrator Phil Morris (Seinfeld’s Jackie Chiles) leads the way, The Guild co-star Jeff Lewis provides the most comedic punch, and, as you might expect, the camera slowly pans across every single image it encounters. It’s pretty fun stuff, though the commenters seem more interesting in explaining how,

Fund This: Impressive Cast, Crew Seeks $45,000 For ‘Muzzled’ Musical

Project Name: Muzzled the Musical Asking For: $45,000 on Kickstarter Amount Raised Thus Far (At Time Of Post): $5,707 Days Remaining In Campaign (At Time Of Post): 36 Description: Muzzled is a musical set in a fanciful and somewhat dark world. As with most musicals, the inhabitants of the Muzzled world are looking for any reason to start singing, and the series' creators have facilitated this desire by turning song into a major plot point. The only people who are allowed to sing are a collection of princesses who use music as a symbol of power. They are opposed by a ragtag group called the Blackhearts, who must wear titular "muzzle" tattoos that prevent them from singing. Web series fans will find plenty of familiar faces among the cast, including Ashly Burch, Ashley Clements, Mary Kate Wiles, and Jeff Lewis. A first look at this cast is available in the Muzzled

Emily S. Whitten: Phil Lamarr at Awesome Con DC!

  • Comicmix
So, ComicMix readers, as per my previous column, Awesome Con DC happened April 20 and 21…and, I say this unironically, it was awesome. I had a blast. I spent time with good friends; I met new friends; I walked the con floor and met comics legends (great chat, Larry Hama!) and witty and charming award-winning artists (hello, Ben Templesmith!); and was delighted with the strong turnout of talented local comics folks. I went to a couple of panels (amazing, for me, since I usually plan to go to tons and then don’t go to…any); and wore my Girl Jayne Firefly costume. And yes, naturally, I bought some stuff (surprise!). I also pretended to be Nick Galifianakis for awhile (don’t tell!) and did three fantaaaastic interviews: with Nick, and with the amazingly talented Phil Lamarr and Billy West. (More convention pictures here, and oh by the way, next year

TV on Tap: Nathan Lane is Returning to "Modern Family," NBC is Developing a George Washington Drama and a Defense of "Leave It to Beaver"

Sigh. The afterglow never lasts for long.

News

Jeff Lewis is suing Jenni Pulos over a book she has written, claiming she is in violation of non-disclosure agreements. I think we've finally reached the point where Jeff's tendency to push people away has finally gotten Jenni.

I suspect someone at Hgtv is smacking their forehead and exclaiming, "A show about a design firm staffed by models/handymen? Why didn't I think of that?"

Macy's has responded to the petition that the retailer cut their association with Donald Trump, giving Us Weekly a statement where they try to distance themselves from his recent election inspired extra-awfulness while continuing to sell products with his name.

NBC is developing a drama about George Washington that would switch back and forth between the time when Washington was a revolutionary fighting for the colonies' independence and his time as the country's first president. I

Comic-Con 2012: Schedule of Headliners

The Comic-Con 2012 schedule has now been released in full, and barring any major updates, is set. The blessing and curse of being an attendee is deciding which panels/autograph sessions/special events to attend, when they conflict. And they always do.

For you to see for yourself, below are what we are calling the “headliner” panels; those panels that are taking place in Hall H, Ballroom 20, Room 6Bdf, and the just-next-door Hilton Indigo Ballroom, the four major venues for panels. There are descriptions of each panel as well as the show(s) and/or movie(s) they are there to discuss.

See how many conflicts you might have, or how you might arrange time and space to somehow attend these plus spend every day in the vendors’ Exhibit Hall and chasing zombies in the nearby The Walking Dead Escape. By the way, if you figure that out, Please let us know.

San Diego Comic-Con 2012: Day 3 (July 14) Schedule Now Live

Another day, another schedule for the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. Next up is Day 3 - Saturday, July 14th - which is just about as chock-full of events for the horror crowd as Friday the 13th!

As always, our focus is the horror panels, but included are a few others that we think will be of interest as well. Remember that times and participants are subject to change so keep your eyes on the official Sdcc site for updates. And hopefully they'll provide a fix soon for the Sdcc smartphone app - in years past it's been extremely helpful.

10:00-11:00 Comic-Con How-To: Anatomy of a Fight Scene, Part One— Stories are about conflict, and there is no purer form of conflict than a good ol' fisticuffs-style brawl-or sword fight, laser battle, western shootout, or even two chicks pulling each other's hair. How do you put that much action down on

Felicia Day hints at secret cameos in The Avengers

In a recent event to promote her new YouTube channel, Geek and Sundry (an event which was, incidentally, the largest-scale Google + Hangout that there’s been so far), web series queen Felicia Day (The Guild, Dragon Age: Redemption) briefly addressed her friend Joss Whedon’s upcoming superhero flick The Avengers, saying: “I know a couple of people in it, but some of them might be spoilers so I really can’t say.”

This could mean that The Avengers features Awesome Secret Surprise Cameos, or just that, in order to avoid spoilers, Felicia Day’s erring on the safe side. But for the purposes of crazed fanboy speculation, we shall assume the former, and hope for cameos as brilliant as those in The Muppets.

[Casting speculation spoilers follow.]

Having played roles in the Joss Whedon productions Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dollhouse, and Doctor Horrible’s Sing-a-Long Blog, Felicia Day knows quite a few Whedon alums,

‘Minute Physics’ Is My New Must-Watch

Is time travel really possible? Does hydrogen make a sound? Why is the universe expanding, and why is it accelerating? How does the sun actually work? Yeah… right away I knew this is my kind of series—intellectually stimulating and yet accessible and concise. One Minute Physics is one of its names, though officially known on YouTube as just Minute Physics, it quickly illustrates findings at the forefront of academic physics in a curt, breezy one-minute-plus format. The weekly series, which launched in June, comes from the hands of creator Henry Reich, a producer with an unlikely mix of Physics scholar and production veteran. And the two fields aren’t just casual interests, Reich earned two degrees in Physics, one at Grinnell College and then a Masters at Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics before leaving Canada and heading to Los Angeles to go after an Mfa in Film Production at USC.

The Guild Reveals Guest Stars: Zachary Levi, Eliza Dushku, Rick Fox

One very generous and supportive fan of Felicia Day’s hit web series The Guild with a penchant for non-profit organizations that support after-school music programs and a few thousand dollars of disposable income ($3,300 to be exact) will make a cameo appearance in an installment of this Season Five of the gamer-oriented series with mass appeal. He or she will be happy to know he or she will be in good company. A helluva lot of celebrities are making cameo appearances this season, too. You may have noticed Author Neil Gaiman and original members of the Battlestar Galaticast Richard Hatch and Erin Gray showed up at the Megagame-o-ramacon in last week’s episode. This week’s installment reveals even more of those super secret guest stars Day and company hinted at earlier this year, but have kept hidden all season. Chuck’s Zachary Levi, Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Eliza Dushku and Tom Lenk,

'The Guild': Richard Hatch, Neil Gaiman cameo in new episode -- watch it

<a href='http://www.bing.com/videos/watch/video/season-5-episode-7-downturn/y0f1a5tz?from=us-Video&src=v5:embed::' target='_new' title='Season 5 - Episode 7 - Downturn'>Video: Season 5 - Episode 7 - Downturn</a>

The action at Megagame-o-ramacon continues in the latest episode of "The Guild," with cameos by a couple of sci-fi icons thrown in.

Author Neil Gaiman -- held hostage by the demands of Zaboo's (Sandeep Parikh) Seat Savers Network -- original "Battlestar Galactica" star Richard Hatch and Erin Gray ("Buck Rogers in the 25th Century") all make appearances in the episode, which debuted online Thursday (Sept. 8) and which you can see up above.

(Highlight of the episode for us: Watching Vork (Jeff Lewis) lose his mind in the presence of Gray's character.)

Meanwhile, Codex's (Felicia Day) ongoing dilemma about whether she should quit the game and the Guild continues ("I hate being an adult!") -- although she puts off making a decision so she can try to fix one of Tinkerballa's (Amy Okuda) problems.

What do you think of the episode, and of this season

Sean Becker on Directing ‘The Guild’: “I Almost Said No”

From Sandeep Parikh to Felicia Day, The Guild has launched careers for a number of its actors, but it has also created work for the people behind the camera. Sean Becker, the series' Streamy Award-winning director since season two, is one such case. Becker is a rare but increasingly common case of a person who, for basically his entire career, has worked in new media. The Guild, whose fifth season officially premieres on the web on July 26, is probably his most high profile credit, but Becker has lots of plans and projects. "It’s been crazy lately," Becker said in an interview. "I'm keeping busy and couldn't be happier. And I'd rather have that then not be busy at all." Becker has been working on passion projects with a number of Guild actors, including Jeff Lewis (The Jeff Lewis 5-Minute Comedy Hour, currently raising funds for season two), J. Teddy Garces

Bravo Orders More Real Housewives and Just Desserts, Adds 11 New Shows

Bravo Orders More Real Housewives and Just Desserts, Adds 11 New Shows
Bravo announced the renewal of five hit series on Wednesday, proving without a shadow of a doubt that those Real Housewives aren’t going anywhere.

The network has picked up the Beverly Hills and Atlanta editions of Real Housewives for second and fourth seasons, respectively. Of course, one glaring omission from Bravo’s list of renewals is the Housewives of DC, which wrapped months ago and is rumored to be canceled. However, a rep for the network says a decision on that series’ future has yet to be made.

Top Chef Just Desserts, which had a rough go of it ratings-wise during its first installment,
