Vintage year at Indie Spirits as 'Sideways' wins

27 February 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

The 20th IFP Independent Spirit Awards took a big drink of Sideways on Saturday as Fox Searchlight's wine-soaked comedy picked up six trophies, including best feature, to become the darling of the indie film set. Under an all-embracing tent in a parking lot off the beach in Santa Monica, the event, organized by IFP/Los Angeles, turned into a veritable sweep on the part of the $16 million production, easily one of the priciest films in this year's indie pack. Produced by Michael London, Sideways earned awards for Alexander Payne for best director and for Payne and Jim Taylor for best screenplay. In the acting categories, the film's Paul Giamatti took home honors for best male lead, and Thomas Haden Church and Virginia Madsen scored in the supporting categories. The female lead nod went to Catalina Sandino Moreno, who plays a reluctant drug runner in HBO Films/Fine Line Features' Maria Full of Grace. The film's writer-director, Joshua Marston, received an award for best first screenplay. »

Sideways Captivates Independent Spirit Awards

26 February 2005 | IMDb News

This year's Independent Spirit Awards turned into a Sideways coronation, as the hit comedy won all six awards it was nominated for. In addition to taking Best Picture, the movie won Best Director for Alexander Payne, Best Screenplay for Payne and Jim Taylor, and acting awards for Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, and Virginia Madsen. (The fourth Sideways co-star, Sandra Oh, got an honorable mention as the sole cast member who could drink all the others under the table.) With Sideways getting the lion's share of awards, there was scant room for other movies, with the closest competitors nabbing only two awards each. Maria Full of Grace won the Best Actress honor for Catalina Sandino Moreno as well as Best First Feature, while The Motorcycle Diaries nabbed Best Cinematography and Best Debut Performance for Rodrigo de la Serna. Other winners included indie hit Garden State for Best First Feature, The Sea Inside for Best Foreign Film, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster for Best Documentary, and Mean Creek for the John Cassavetes Award, which honors films made for under $500,000. Moreno To Take Whole Family to Oscars?

31 January 2005 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Colombian actress Catalina Sandino Moreno is so thrilled to be nominated for a Best Actress Oscar, she wants to bring her whole family to this year's Academy Awards ceremony. The 23-year-old beauty is nominated for her critically acclaimed performance in Maria Full Of Grace, for which she has already picked up a Silver Berlin Bear gong at the Berlin Film Festival last year. Moreno says, "I'm happy. A lot of people ask me, 'What are you going to wear?' I'm like, 'I don't know. I just knew (I was going) three, four hour ago! I don't know anything.' I just know that I'm trying to realize that I'm getting an Oscar nomination. That is very, very odd. Just let me digest it and then we talk about dresses. And the only thing I know is that I'm going to have fun. I'm going to be with my family. I talked to my grandmother and she was like, 'I'm going to go to LA to see you at the Oscars.' That's perfect. I want all of my family to come!" »

Screen Actors Guild Nominations Go Sideways

11 January 2005 | IMDb News

Perennial awards favorite Sideways dominated the Screen Actors Guild nominations with a field-best four nominations, including Best Ensemble Cast. The Alexander Payne comedy also nabbed three individual acting nominations as well for lead Paul Giamatti and supporting players Thomas Haden Church and Virginia Madsen, putting it just ahead of a number of films that received three nominations each, including The Aviator, Finding Neverland, Million Dollar Baby, and Hotel Rwanda; all those movies also earned Best Ensemble nominations alongside Ray and Sideways. Jamie Foxx was once again the actor of the hour, taking home three individual nominations for Ray, Collateral, and TV movie Redemption: The Stan Tookie Williams Story as well as an Ensemble nod for Ray. Foxx was followed by Hilary Swank, who received two solo nominations, for Million Dollar Baby and HBO movie Iron Jawed Angels, and an Ensemble mention for Million Dollar Baby.

With their film nominations, the SAGs threw a number of new names into the awards season mix, including Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace), James Garner (The Notebook), Freddie Highmore (Finding Neverland), Cloris Leachman (Spanglish), and Sophie Okonedo (Hotel Rwanda). A few noticeable absentees included Liam Neeson (Kinsey), Javier Bardem (The Sea Inside), and the entire cast of Closer, an actor-driven movie if there ever was one. On the TV side, familiar shows (The Sopranos, Everybody Loves Raymond, etc) rubbed elbows with a handful of newcomers, including Arrested Development and Desperate Housewives, and Patricia Heaton pulled a Hilary Swank of her own, getting two individual nominations for Everybody Loves Raymond and TV movie remake The Goodbye Girl as well as an Ensemble nomination for Raymond.
