Good Time review – Robert Pattinson excels in electrifying urban thriller

Pattinson runs into a whole lot of trouble in this high-energy heist caper from rising indie stars Josh and Benny Safdie

This adrenalised street opera from feted indie film-makers Josh and Benny Safdie has been hailed in some quarters as a revelatory breakthrough for former Twilight star Robert Pattinson, shedding his celebrity status to “disappear” into the role of an aggressively unsympathetic street hustler. Yet Pattinson (who I thought was terrific in the sneeringly maligned teen-vampire series) has always been much more than a pretty face, proving his mettle in films such as David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis, Brady Corbet’s The Childhood of a Leader, and James Gray’s The Lost City of Z. For me, the real revelation of Good Time comes from seeing the Safdies finally fulfil the promise of 2009’s Daddy Longlegs and 2014’s Heaven Knows What, creating an electrifying urban thriller that combines authenticity with accessibility in a compact,

Robert Pattinson Reveals That ‘Good Time’ Was ‘Much More of a Comedy’ Before the Safdie Brothers Made It Darker
Good Time” isn’t exactly a laugh riot. Robert Pattinson stars as one of two bank-robbing brothers in the Safdie Brothers’ latest, the title of which is about as ironic as Michael Haneke’s “Happy End.” In a new Los Angeles Times interview, however, the “Twilight” star–turned–arthouse staple reveals that the film’s first draft was “much more of a comedy.”

Good Time” is a film that probably flew under the radar of many movie fans. Spirit Award predictions before the nominations are announced

Early on next week, one of the most enjoyable precursors will announce their nominations. Of course, I’m talking about the Film Independent Spirit Awards. Predicting them are always an absolute shot in the dark, and normally I wait until the nominees are announced, but hey, why not be bold this year, right? Fortune favors the bold, after all. So, I’ll be giving this a shot. If nothing else, it’s a fun exercise. The Spirit Awards are the fun cousin to the Academy Award, so while it doesn’t have the prestige of winning an Oscar, it represents something very honorable as well. For some, it’s even the more cherished prize. In any event, read on to see my complete guess at Spirit Award results… Depending on what is eligible, my picks could be way off, so just keep that in mind. For what it’s worth,

Sean Baker Cut Up Paul Thomas Anderson Long Takes To See if a Doc-Style Steadicam Would Work on ‘The Florida Project’

Sean Baker Cut Up Paul Thomas Anderson Long Takes To See if a Doc-Style Steadicam Would Work on ‘The Florida Project’
Sean Baker is a filmmaker who puts a premium on making his films feel as authentic as possible. For example, sometimes he will use a handheld camera to follow his characters — who are often played by first-time performers — to give a scene a sense of documentary realism. After “Tangerine” — Baker’s iPhone-shot indie breakout — he started to wonder if image stabilization advances in smartphone cameras was changing what audiences thought “real” footage looked like.

“Audiences see homemade raw footage, but with a stabilizer on,” said Baker when he was guest on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “So everybody is shooting their Youtube and Instagram videos and they are all very smooth — so we’re changing the way audiences think about how cameras are held and if shots are stable or not.” This led Baker to consider if he could employ a documentary-style steadicam effectively to his next film, “The Florida Project.

Lead Actor Oscar Race Is Battle of Marquee Names

Lead Actor Oscar Race Is Battle of Marquee Names
The lead actor race showcases a wide variety of performances, from vets playing real people (Gary Oldman blustering as Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour” and Jake Gyllenhaal as Boston Marathon survivor Jeff Bauman in “Stronger”) to newcomers including Timothée Chalamet (“Call Me by Your Name”) and Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out”) portraying fictional characters. There are also previous winners such as Denzel Washington in “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” and and Daniel Day-Lewis and Tom Hanks in two films that have yet to screen, “Phantom Thread” and “The Post.” But the prestige behind their projects are enough to put the lead actors in a frontrunner position. Hugh Jackman has both “The Greatest Showman” and “Logan,” but appears to be centering on the latter for awards, and could land another nom. And James Franco channeling Tommy Wiseau in “The Disaster Artist” could just be crazy enough to pull off an upset. Then there’s Matt Damon, an Oscar winner

Good Time directors the Safdie brothers: ‘Robert Pattinson was just a guy chasing work’

The low-budget crime-thriller film-makers talk about being ‘petrified of stasis’ and casting the Twilight star in their latest release, despite not having seen his movies

In a Hollywood that seems more monetised, sanitised and purely profit-driven than ever – these days, we use the phrase “film industry” so much more than “film world” – it is good to be reminded of the people tearing up around the edges, propelled by their own outsized forces of personality and vision. Josh and Benny Safdie are chancers, hustlers and prodigious talents. You could say they have been film-makers since they were kids, when their dad used to shut them in a closet with a camcorder. They are also throwbacks to a more haphazard, chaotic and readily romanticised time when movies trailed the mythos of their own making; when what you saw on screen in the 70s, say, was tinted with behind-the-scenes legends of chutzpah.

The brothers,

2018 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: David & Nathan Zellner’s Damsel

  • ioncinema
We incorrectly labeled this guesstimate as dropping in 2017 and to be frank, we’re a bit surprised that it didn’t shore up at the Venice Film Festival apres Robert Pattinson (a significant go to player for the more difficult Euro-centric and American indie material) went to Cannes with Safdie Bros.

Since wrapping up the Twilight series five years ago, Robert Pattinson has done his utmost to distance himself from his teen heart-throb image. Good Time, more than ever of his previous efforts, really cements his place as one of the most interesting actors out there right now.

The Academy Governors Awards: Angelina Jolie and Agnes Varda Danced as Hollywood Celebrated Oscars

The Academy Governors Awards: Angelina Jolie and Agnes Varda Danced as Hollywood Celebrated Oscars
“Shitty is shitty,” new Academy governor Whoopi Goldberg told me of the vote to expel a member for the second time in AMPAS’ 90-year history. As everyone in Hollywood struggles to keep their head straight amid a flood of sexual harassment scandals, this year’s crop of Oscar contenders braved Hollywood and Highland traffic snarls to charm a room full of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) members, including the 54 Governors who voted for this year’s five Honorary Oscars, presented at the 9th (untelevised) Governors Awards.

Behind the scenes, Oscar campaigners had pushed their clients as presenters. Clearly, it was a no-brainer to put Jennifer Lawrence (“mother!”) on stage to present to her “Hunger Games” costar Donald Sutherland (“M.A.S.H.,” “Klute,” “Don’t Look Now”), who never scored one Oscar nomination. “It’s odd that he never won an Oscar,” said Lawrence, thanking him for his generosity and

This year’s 20th anniversary edition of the Scad (Savannah College of Art and Design) Savannah Film Festival, which lays claim to being the largest university-run film fest in the world, continued its two-decades-long tradition of mixing Hollywood wattage with downhome southern hospitality. Once again the fest honored an eclectic mix of celebrity guests of all ages (elder statesmen and women included Richard Gere, Sir Patrick Stewart, Aaron Sorkin, Salma Hayek Pinault, Holly Hunter, and Kyra Sedgwick, while the “youngsters” featured the likes of John Boyega, Zoey Deutch, Robert Pattinson, Andrea Riseborough, and Willow Shields). The festival also played host to […]
