19 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Before he gained fame as brooding vampire Edward Cullen in the “Twilight” film series, Robert Pattinson was involved in a slightly seedier endeavor — porn piracy. Pattinson appeared on Howard Stern’s radio show Tuesday and discussed an array of topics, including his past as a purveyor of pilfered pornography. “I’ve never actually said this before,” Pattinson told Stern. “I was, like, stealing porno magazines and selling them at school.” Also Read: Robert Pattinson: I Was Almost Fired From 'Twilight' Pattinson’s sticky-fingered entrepreneurship earned him a pretty, if tainted, penny, the actor said, noting we would sell the »

As he recalled to Stern, he even left the country right after »

Locarno Festival 2017 Lineup: The Best Summer Movie Counterprogramming You Could Ask For

15 July 2017 10:53 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The summer movie season may start winding down by early August, but for cinephiles, that’s when the real fun begins. While the fall season festivals — epitomized by the trio of awards season influencers Telluride, Toronto and New York — are a massive platform for major prestige titles at the end of the year, the Locarno Film Festival has the jump on all of them, and provides the most diverse range of cinema you’ll see anywhere in the world.

The 70th edition, announced this week, provides the latest example. No festival embodies the “something for everyone” philosophy better than Locarno, which complements its cinephile-oriented sections with another one exclusively designed for wider audiences. That would be the Piazza Grande, where 16 features screen outdoors for an audience of 8,000 people. But rather than simply showcasing the same summer blockbusters that have dominated the box office, the Piazza features international efforts well suited to pleasing massive crowds, »

They don’t make ’em like this any more, and the original TV spots for James Gray’s accurate retelling of history almost didn’t know how to sell it. Charlie Hunnam spends his life trying to solve a riddle of the Peruvian rainforest, in between fighting in WW1 and dealing with class prejudice. Yup, one could say the picture was filmed in a ‘classic’ style . . . can a show like that find an audience these days?

The 25 Best Romances of the 21st Century, From ‘Carol’ to ‘Only Lovers Left Alive’

7 July 2017 11:39 AM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Eat your heart out, moviegoers. Everyone loves a good love story whether they admit it or not, and the 21st century has brought us more than a few couples worth rooting for: Clementine and Joel, Ennis and Jack, Joaquin and his computer. Often these unions are unconventional or hidden in the guise of something more high-concept — straightforward romances are so 20th century — but at the end of the day, we all want to see a happy ending for our smitten lovers.

Our list goes all over the map, from the mainstream maestro Nancy Meyers to international masters like Wong Kar-Wai. Some were blockbuster hits (“Twilight,” “The Proposal”); others have hardly been seen stateside at all (Lee Chang-dong’s 2002 “Oasis”). However, all of them illustrate some essential element of love, from falling to longing and all the sticky bits in between.

While the zeitgeist has skewed toward the melancholy, that’s »
