Jari Olavi Rantala is an award winning screenwriter with over a decade's experience working for film and television. He was awarded the Jussi-prize for best screenplay for Frozen Land in 2005.

Rantala has collaborated with the award winning director Aku Louhimies on four films. The most recent film is a new film version of Väinö Linna's war epic novel The Unknown Soldier. Rantala has also written screenplays for the intense crime drama, European Film Award nominee 8-Ball (2013) and for Tears of April (2008), a historic film situated in Finnish civil war.

Rantala has recently written episodes of both drama and comedy for television and he's also developed and co-written a 12 episode TV crime series Deadwind which is in production.

Rantala is also an author and has published a crime novel and a collection of short stories in Finland.

Rantala has studied film theory and literature in the University of Turku and Helsinki. He has served in the Finnish Army and is an active officer in reserve.
