With Chris Evans’ departure from “Top Gear,” the British automotive series is undergoing its second host change in a little more than a year. But don’t expect a complete overhaul this time.

Sources tell Variety that Evans’ co-host Matt LeBlanc will return for the show’s 24th season, which is set to begin production in September. Contributors Chris Harris, Eddie Jordan, Rory Reid and Sabine Schmitz, who joined LeBlanc and Evans for season 23, are expected to return alongside LeBlanc for season 24. No replacement for Evans is expected to be named — leaving LeBlanc and the contributors to carry the show’s on-camera responsibilities.

LeBlanc is also set to star this fall in the freshman CBS comedy series “Man With a Plan,” his first starring role on U.S. broadcast TV in a decade. Under LeBlanc’s deal with the studio, “Man With the Plan” is in first position, with the studio obliged to make a good-faith effort »

‘Top Gear’ Host Chris Evans Steps Down Amid Low Ratings, Sexual Assault Investigation

4 July 2016 7:48 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

London — “Top Gear” host Chris Evans announced on Monday he is stepping down as co-presenter of the rebooted series after just one season.

Evans’ quick exit comes amid reports that the longtime BBC personality is under investigation by police for allegations that surfaced in May about a sexual assault dating back to the early 1990s. At the same time, “Top Gear” has struggled in the ratings since it relaunched in May with Evans at the helm and five co-hosts including actor Matt LeBlanc..

The Heat Street website recently reported that Evans was set to be quizzed by London’s Metropolitan police over allegations of sexual harassment and groping that were made against Evans in May, allegedly dating from the early 1990s. Evans has denied the claims, deeming the allegations of bullying “ridiculous” and a “witch-hunt.” The host has also been the subject of lurid allegations that he repeatedly exposed himself to co-workers during the same early 1990s »

BBC’s ‘Top Gear’ Retuned But Staying True to Original Essence, Says Series Editor Alex Renton

Top Gear,” the world’s biggest motoring show, relaunches in the U.K. on BBC on Sunday and in the U.S. on BBC America on Monday with a new lineup of hosts — led by Chris Evans and Matt LeBlanc – and some fine tuning to the format, including a significant change to the “Star in a Reasonably Priced Car” segment.

Series editor Alex Renton, who has been with the show for about 11 years, tells Variety that “Star in a Reasonably Priced Car,” in which a celebrity races an affordable hatchback around the track at the show’s home, Dunsfold, has now become “Star in a Rallycross Car.”

“We’ve always talked on ‘Top Gear’ about rallycross as being the best form of racing out there,” Renton says. “That type of racing on a mixed surface – between tarmac and a lose surface – is an exciting spectacle to watch, and it is really exciting to drive. »
