'Kung Fu Panda 2,' 'Puss in Boots,' 'Rango' lead Annie award nominations

5 December 2011 10:29 AM, PST | EW - Inside Movies | See recent EW.com - Inside Movies news »

DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 2 picked up 12 nominations for the 39th Annual Annie Awards — announced today by the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood — including Best Animated Feature and Best Director. DreamWorks’ Puss in Boots and Paramount’s Rango won nine nods, and Pixar’s Cars 2 earned seven. Steven Spielberg’s motion-capture The Adventures of Tintin won five nods, including Best Feature; the last animated film built from performances by live actors to earn a nod for the top prize at the Annies was 2006′s Monster House.

Curiously, Cars 2 did not earn nominations for director John Lasseter, »

'Kung Fu Panda 2' Leads the 2011 Annie Award Nominations

5 December 2011 8:30 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I don't put much stock in the Annie Awards and neither does Disney after withdrawing from the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood back in 2010. I have personally never found them to be a good judge of quality and as such don't pay them any particular attention, though I will pass along the information as they have announced their 2011 nominees with Dreamworks' Kung Fu Panda 2 leading the way with 12 nominations, followed by Puss in Boots and Rango each with nine. Of course, while Disney has withdrawn from the Annies that doesn't mean they aren't considered for the awards as Cars 2, Gnomeo and Juliet and Winnie the Pooh are among the nominees. Last year How to Train Your Dragon reigned supreme over Toy Story 3 and I wouldn't be surprised to see Kung Fu Panda 2 take home plenty of hardware, following in the footsteps of its predecessor, which beat out »

DVD Review: Gnomeo & Juliet

4 June 2011 4:00 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Gnomeo & Juliet

Stars: James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, Matt Lucas, Jason Statham | Written by Kelly Asbury, Mark Burton, Kevin Cecil, Emily Cook, Kathy Greenberg, Andy Riley & Steve Hamilton Shaw | Directed by Kelly Asbury

A new twist on Bill Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy (you know the one…), the punnily titled Gnomeo & Juliet follows the rivalry between two neighboring gardens and their pint-sized inhabitants – garden gnomes, frogs and other potted creatures – replacing Montagues and Capulets with Reds and Blues, and the forbidden romance between the titular star-crossers, Gnomeo (James McAvoy) and Juliet (Emily Blunt).

While not being entirely original (clearly), the film does have a good go at putting a new spin on events, with the Red & Blues’ rivalry being mostly based on making one garden look worse than the other, or racing lawnmowers down the adjacent alleyway, sometimes resulting in unfortunate smashes. However, this new spin isn’t »

New Line Acquires Life Rights To 42 Year Old NFL Cheerleader Laura Vikmanis

29 March 2011 4:16 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

In the second prominent movie about an aging cheerleader since Dubya, New Line have acquired the rights to the life story of one Laura Vikmanis who, at the age of 42 is by some distance the oldest cheerleader working in the NFL. The story was taken up and pitched by Emily Cook and Kathy Greenberg who are currently enjoying a great deal of success with their script for Gnomeo and Juliet, which has been strong at the box offices both here and abroad.

And in Vikamanis, they clearly see the narrative of the individual heroin against the odds that plays particularly well to American audiences, especially given what a specifically American phenomenon cheerleading is.

Vikmanis took up cheerleading after her husband left her as a means to filling in her time. She witnessed the Cincinnati Bengals cheerleading team at a match with her sister and spent the following year training before »

Laura Vikmanis: NFL's oldest cheerleader the subject of 'Blind Side'-esque movie

25 March 2011 6:26 PM, PDT | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

New Line may have picked up the rights to a new cheerleading story, but it will certainly be a far cry from the likes of "Bring it On" and its several (unnecessary) sequels.

Laura Vikmanis, the 42-year-old Ben-Gal who currently holds the record as the NFL's oldest cheerleader, will be the subject of a new big-screen project according to The Hollywood Reporter. Don't expect just a fluffy comedy about blonde cheerleaders though, as the story is being compared to Sandra Bullock's "The Blind Side."

Co-writers Kathy Greenberg and Emily Cook explain that while there will be some humor in the story, it will definitely hold more substance.

"It's really a feel good populist story in the vein of 'Blind Side,'" Greenberg says. "It's got more comedy to be sure, but it's an earnest story."

The film will document Vickmanis' trials and tribulations after being left by her »

Story Of The NFL's Oldest Cheerleader May Be The Actual Next Blind Side

25 March 2011 8:32 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Any producer with half a brain is eager to compare their potential project to The Blind Side, the movie that grossed $300 million worldwide when nobody expected anything out of it. But New Line may have the actual next Blind Side on their hands-- an inspirational sports movie with a role tailor made for Sandra Bullock. As THR reports, they've got producers RIchard and Lauren Shuler Donner working on the life story of Laura Vikmanis, who at 42 is the oldest cheerleader in the NFL. The movie will be based on both on Vikmanis's life rights and a pitch from writers Emily Cook and Kathy Greenberg, who worked on Gnomeo and Juliet but I'll choose not to hold that against them. Vikmanis didn't exactly age up in the cheerleader ranks-- at 39, when her husband left her for a younger woman, she spent a year training in order to try out for the »

NFL's oldest cheerleader to get big-screen story

25 March 2011 8:00 AM, PDT | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

It's rare that being someone other than the hot young ingenue of the moment pays off in Hollywood, but it looks like the tale of a middle-aged woman becoming an NFL cheerleader after her husband left her for, you guessed it, a younger woman will be coming to a theatre near you.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the story of 42-year-old Laura Vikmanis, a mom of two teenage girls who scored a spot on the Cincinnati Bengals cheerleading squad will get a film treatment from the good people at New Line. The studio has picked up Vikmanis' life rights and Emily Cook and Kathy Greenberg will be penning her story. »

This one sheet is a seriously great bit of marketing for "Madea's Big Happy Family" that riffs on another iconic poster.

Stills from Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, posters for Scream 4 and A Better Life, heaps of hi-res images of the toy line tie-in for Thundercats, and the logo artwork for The Muppets.

A beauty-sucking Queen and battle-hungry dwarves are the highlights says a script review of the upcoming "Snow White and the Huntsman" at Universal Pictures.

A fun video comparing scenes from both versions of "True Grit".

Warner Bros. Pictures has announced an April 15th release date for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One". The film will be available as both a Blu-ray combo (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy) release and a single-disc DVD.
