Music in the movies: Randy Newman

22 November 2010 4:39 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

As Toy Story 3 arrives on DVD and Blu-ray, we take a timely look back at the work of its composer, Randy Newman...

With the release of Toy Story 3 on Blu-ray and DVD, I thought now would be an ideal time to look back at the work of Randy Newman.

Newman is best known nowadays for his film scores, and specifically his work for Disney/Pixar, but prior to embarking on his composing career he was a singer/songwriter. His work as a solo artist in the 70s featured a caustic wit running through much of his material.

His move to composing could be seen as an inevitable one, as his uncles were both composers for film. Newman has managed to firmly establish himself as one of the finest composers and songwriters working in the medium today, earning fourteen Oscar nominations throughout his career so far.

In a double blow to mentor Cheryl Cole, Cohen found herself in the bottom two against another female act, Katie Waissel, after they failed to impress viewers with their chosen American anthems on last night's show. In the final sing-off, Cohen covered Toni Braxton's 'Unbreak My Heart', while Waissel seemingly gave up part way through her performance of 'Please Don't Give Up On Me' by Riders In The Sky, shouting "Sod it!" and sitting down on stage. When it came to the judges' vote, Cowell first declared that he considered Cohen to be "the better singer" but saw Waissel as "the more interesting performer". However, he ultimately sent home Cohen, figuring that the viewers would prefer to see Waissel next week. Host (more) »
