Alim Serif Onaran(1921-2000)
He was Turkey's first professor of cinema, he had always been involved in cinema for many years. . He graduated from the School of Political Sciences in 1946. . in 1973, he was appointed to Ankara University Press and Broadcasting School as an associate professor. in 1976, he was appointed as the Head of Sound and Performing Arts at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Ege University, where he pioneered the establishment of the Cinema-Television Department, and two years later he was given the title of professor. He was the first professor of Turkish Cinema. Onaran was appointed as the Head of Cinema-TV Department at Marmara University School of Journalism and Public Relations in 1985. After his retirement in 1988, he continued to teach here and at other faculties.
He made many translations. The most important of his translations is the 16-volume 'One Thousand and One Nights'. 'Cinematographic Freedom' (1968), 'Sound Cinema History' (1977), 'Muhsin Ertugrul Cinema' (1981), 'Introduction to Cinema' (1986), 'Lütfi Ömer Akad' (1991), 'Silent Cinema' History' (1994) and 'Turkish Cinema' (1994). , by donating nearly 5 thousand books, enabled the opening of the library bearing his name in the building of the Faculty of Fine Arts of 9 Eylül University in Narlidere. These were Turkish, English, German,
Italian, Spanish, French art history, theatre, literature, cinema and television books. He spoke French, English, Italian and Spanish.
The 7th International Izmir Film Festival awarded him the 'Golden Artemis', and he received the 'Honorary Award' at the Türsak 2nd Cinema-History Meeting. He was a pioneer in the schooling of cinema.
