Shia Labeouf to become A Giant

19 October 2011 7:43 PM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

While most of the world only cares about Shia Labeouf getting decked by some yahoo outside a downtown Vancouver nightclub a few days ago, there's also some showbiz news of his to report. The Transformers star is now attched to topline A Giant, a drama/fantasy that has Monster House director Gil Kenan also attached as its director.

The project would see the 25-year-old play a man who's 20-feet-tall, which is more than a few feet higher than the tallest man on record. The giant lives as a recluse inside his own home until he begins a friendship with a rebellious woman who is his next door neighbor. The two eventually fall in love, and their relationship is described as a "modern day adult dramatic fairy tale."

The Jim Henson Company is involved with the project, which suggests that there may be other fantasy elements at play. Also involved creatively »

Shia Labeouf is A Giant 20-Foot-Tall Man Child

18 October 2011 1:38 PM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Director Gil Kenan showed what a vivid imagination he had with his debut animation feature Monster House in 2006 and although his live-action, big family adventure City of Ember didn’t quite work out for him three years later (the box office failure of which cost him the directing job on Green Lantern which he was briefly attached too), there’s little doubt that there was plenty of talent on display. And his next picture sounds like one that will allow him to flex all his creative muscles.

Variety reports that Keenan has secured Shia Labeouf to star in A Giant, a quirky romance tale he has penned about an unlucky in love and broke girl who moves back home to reconnect with her brother but ends up falling in love with a 20-foot-tall man child neighbour.

Casting Bits: Shia Labeouf in Indie Romcom, Melissa McCarthy in ‘Tammy’, Nicolas Cage in ‘The Black Butterfly’

18 October 2011 10:30 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

[1] Shia Labeouf may be out [2] of the Transformers franchise, but the young actor is hardly wanting for work. He's wrapped John Hillcoat's The Wettest County in the World, is currently shooting Robert Redford's The Company You Keep, and is now attached to star in an offbeat romcom going by the working title A Giant. Gil Kenan (Monster House) will direct from his own script, which revolves around a girl who's unlucky in money and love. When she moves back home with her brother, she forms a relationship with her next-door-neighbor -- "a 20-foot-tall man-child" (Labeouf). Labeouf was reportedly in the running to star in Fox's Frankenstein, which is being directed by Shawn Levy, but ultimately chose A Giant over the horror adaptation. No start date for A Giant has been announced, but Labeouf's involvement should help the project get going. [Variety] After the jump, New Line picks up Melissa McCarthy's Tammy, »

Shia Labeouf is the Giant Next Door

18 October 2011 9:35 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Shia Labeouf wishes he was a giant. Then he might not have looked so awkward starring alongside Victoria’s Secret supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in the last “Transformers” movie. Hard to look convincing next to your leading lady when you have to look up to kiss her and not the other way around. Hollywood magic can usually “trick up” an actor’s height onscreen, but there were moments in “Dark of the Moon” that was just, well, awkward. Labeouf may still be smarting from that “my girlfriend in the movie is like a foot taller than me” complex because he’s signed on to star as a 20-foot giant in a new movie called “A Giant”. “A Giant” (the current working title) is from writer Gil Kenan, who will also direct the movie. The storyline finds a broke girl with bad luck in love moving back home with her estranged brother, »

Shia Labeouf to Become 'A Giant' in Quirky Love Story from Gil Kenan

18 October 2011 9:03 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Since yesterday brought the news that franchise star Shia Labeouf would not be returning for what looks to be back-to-back Transformers sequels with Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay returning in their respective roles and executive producer and director, that means a different project will have his talents instead. Variety has word that Labeouf is attached to a quirky love story tentatively titled A Giant. The film, which will be written and directed by Monster House helmer Gil Kenan, will see the Eagle Eye actor playing a 20-foot-tall man-child who forms a relationship with the pretty girl who lives next door. Read on! The young girl in question has yet to be cast, but the strange love story makes sense with her being broke and distraught from a series of terrible relationships and moving back home to reconnect with her brother. Shia Labeouf To Star In Quirky Love Story Called A Giant

18 October 2011 8:53 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

It's easy to pick on Shia Labeouf. He's got a funny name. He stars in the godawful Transformers movies. He inherently brings back memories of that Indiana Jones movie which must not be named. You might be slower to razz the poor guy, however, if he were 20 feet tall and lived next door to you. Then again, you might just fall in love. That is, more or less, the concept behind A Giant, a new film project in which Labeouf has signed to play the oversized lead. Based on a spec script by Gil Kenan (City of Ember), A Giant tells the story of a young woman who moves back home to repair her relationship with her brother and heal after a string of crappy relationships. Instead, according to Variety, she falls in love with Labeouf's character, a 20-foot giant man-child who lives next door to her new digs. Too »

Shia Labeouf To Play A 20-Foot-Tall Man-Child in 'A Giant'

18 October 2011 7:41 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Anyone remember the 2009 sci-fi family-friendly "City Of Ember" starring, among others, Saoirse Ronan and Bill Murray? We barely do either but that film was the sophomore directorial effort of Gil Kenan that somewhat halted his career after 2006's animated flick "Monster House." More recently, Kenan was attached to helm "Green Lantern" and even touched up the script (what remained of it in the movie you saw, we're not sure) but after the abysmal box office takings of 'Ember,' Kenan found himself on the outs. It looks like the young helmer may be on the road to recovery though, with… »

Shia Labeouf Playing A Giant In Newly-Formed Lava Bear Films’ “Quirky Love Story”

17 October 2011 11:28 PM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Shia Labeouf seems to be leaving the franchise game behind in favor of smaller, character-centered dramas. Next year alone will see him in both The Company You Keep and The Wettest County in the World, with Horns still coming down the pipeline. Variety tells us of another project in something of that vein, this one a currently-untitled “quirky love story” from Monster House director Gil Kenan. Lava Bear Films — overseen by David Linde, Tory Metzger, and Adam Rymer — will make it their inaugural film, and The Jim Henson Co. will also produce.

The project, going under the working title of A Giant, is centered on “a girl, broke and running from a series of bad relationships, who moves back home to reconnect with her brother.” In lieu of her sibling, she ends up bonding with Labeouf‘s “20-foot-tall man-child who lives next door,” and this is presumably where the romantic elements come in. »

Shia Labeouf to Star in “Quirky Love Story” A Giant, Written and Directed by Gil Kenan

Shia Labeouf has spent the last few years starring in numbered movies: Indiana Jones 4, Wall Street 2, Transformers 1-3.  Now that he's one of the most powerful young actors in Hollywood, Labeouf looks to be branching out into less sequel-heavy fare.  He has the period bootlegging drama The Wettest County in the World in the can, and is currently filming the political thriller The Company You Keep with director/star Robert Redford.  Though Labeouf has suggested he's ready to dive back in for Indy 5, the latest project he signed on to is unique enough to counteract any cinematic karma.  Variety reports Labeouf is attached to star in a love story going by the working title A Giant.  Written and directed by Gil Kenan (City of Ember), the film centers on a girl who moves back home to reconnect with her brother and forget a series of bad relationships: "Instead she forms »
