Exclusive: Denzel Whitaker Talks Abduction

9 September 2011 6:04 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

During last night's Hollywood party for the Blu-ray and DVD release of X-Men: First Class, I got to speak with young actor Denzel Whitaker on the red carpet. Denzel Whitaker stars in the upcoming thriller Abduction, portraying Gilly, the best friend of Taylor Lautner's main character, Nathan. Here's what he had to say about Abduction on the red carpet.

"Gilly is Taylor Lautner's character's best friend in the film. Taylor's character, Nathan, sort of gets into some trouble, where he sees his picture on a missing persons website. That sort of spawns the whole action throughout the movie. Basically, my character is the one dude he can trust, his best friend, he knows he's not going to turn on him."

I told him that when I first heard about the movie, that I had this thought in my head that he Nathan was kidnapped at birth by who he thinks are his parents. »

25 August 2011 6:04 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

We couldn't be bigger fans of the movie Young Guns, specifically the character Dirty Steve. So when we get a chance to chat with actor Dermot Mulroney, we jump on it.

Dermot Mulroney stars in the new comedy The Family Tree, which hits theaters this Friday, August 26th. While chatting with the guy, whom we love, about his role as a father going through a midlife crisis, we couldn't help but go back to Dirty Steve and his past exploits. As it turns out, Dermot Mulroney would love to see the character return in a spin-off called Young Guns: The Ghost of Dirty Steve.

"All the kids that were watching Young Guns when they were fourteen or fifteen, right when it came out, and everyone got VCRs? They watched it over and over again. You know what happened to them? They all grew up and got jobs. Now, when we talk, »

Abduction (2011) Movie Trailer: John Singleton, Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins

13 April 2011 11:50 PM, PDT | Film-Book | See recent Film-Book news »

The Abduction Movie Trailer has premiered. John Singleton‘s Abduction (2011) stars Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins, Alfred Molina, Sigourney Weaver, and Jason Isaacs. Abduction‘s plot synopsis: “A thriller centered on a young man named Nathan Harper (Taylor Lautner) who sets out to uncover the truth about his life after finding his baby photo on a missing persons website.” They sure did give away many of the plot points in the first movie trailer for Abduction. They showed key people dying in this first trailer for Abduction but they certainly didn’t go down without a fight. I really hope they explain how all of those “skills” suddenly turn on in Nathan. Seems a little strange. In the Bourne Identity its explained. Let’s hope they do the same in Abduction and that Nathan doesn’t have amnesia. That would be lame if this film turns out to be Jason Bourne in high school. »

Yelling to the Sky | Review - SXSW Film 2011

13 April 2011 8:26 PM, PDT | SmellsLikeScreenSpirit | See recent SmellsLikeScreenSpirit news »

Director: Victoria Mahoney Writer: Victoria Mahoney Starring: Zoë Kravitz, Antonique Smith, Jason Clarke, Yolanda Ross Yelling to the Sky is the story of Sweetness (Zoë Kravitz), the adolescent daughter of a Caucasian father, Gordon (Jason Clarke), and Black mother, Lorene (Yolanda Ross). We first meet Sweetness as she is surrounded by a gang of neighborhood bullies led by the intimidatingly rotund Latonya (Gabourey Sidibe); Sweetness' older sister, Ola (Antonique Smith), comes to her rescue and the siblings scurry home. (Presumably the encounter is related to Sweetness' mixed-race parentage.) Things at home are certainly no less dire. Sweetness and Ola's father is a violent alcoholic who disappears for extended periods of time; their mother is a total zombie, incapacitated by depression and God knows what other afflictions. We sense an inner rage boiling within Sweetness, and it is not long before she starts peddling drugs in the stairwell of her high »

Run, Taylor Lautner, Run! And Take Lily Collins With You!

MTV‘s got a new look at “Twilight” guy Taylor Lautner’s upcoming chase thriller “Abduction”, which co-stars the suddenly redhot Lily Collins, who is currently up for every role in Hollywood that requires a pretty female lead. The former music network will also be premiering the first ever trailer or “Abduction” next week. John Singleton directs the film, which finds Lautner running away from shady Government types determined to stop him from uncovering the truth about his past. It’s like a Bourne movie, if Bourne was really obsessed with showing off his abs. Also starring Alfred Molina, Jason Isaacs, Maria Bello, Michael Nyqvist, Sigourney Weaver, Antonique Smith, Denzel Whitaker, Nickola Shreli, Allen Williamson, William Peltz, and running into theaters September 23, 2011. »

SXSW Review: Yelling to the Sky

18 March 2011 7:00 AM, PDT | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

I'm a longtime fan of films that deal frankly with society's worst problems. Poverty, domestic violence, crime, racism and other harsh realities of the human condition can be the stuff of stunningly powerful cinema.

Unfortunately, the gritty and earnest Yelling to the Sky isn't quite the powerful social statement it aspires to be. While it presents many convincing images of an impoverished and completely dysfunctional family, it suffers from clichéd story elements, uneven pacing and underdeveloped characters.

The film, which screened at the Arbor on the first Saturday of SXSW, is the story of Sweetness O'Hara (Zoë Kravitz), a Queens teenager doing her best to survive in her beaten-down world. Her father, Gordon (Jason Clarke) is a violent, manic depressive alcoholic who's often Awol from the household. His wife, Lorene (Yolanda Ross) suffers from depression and other vague ailments that leave her barely able to function. Sweetness's older sister, Ola »
