2010 Winter movie preview (part 2)

What's worth it this season?

A variety of movies are hitting the theaters this Winter, but which ones are worth the price of admission?  Until the expert critics (me) have their reviews up for these upcoming flicks, the only element moviegoers can go on are trailers and casting.  Based on that, here's a look at the 2nd half of 2010 Winter releases.

Read Part 1

Screen Gems is coming out strong in 2010.  They have a slew of releases early on and hope the variety of material they're putting out will attract audiences.  Dear John comes out in early February, and it tells the tale of a soldier who goes back on active duty, after the 9/11 attacks.  The plot will focus on the soldier's relationship with a young girl he meets prior to the attacks and how him reenlisting, takes a toll on their bond.  Channing Tatum will play the soldier and Amanda Seyfried (Jennifer's Body, »

Year in Review Part 2: Burn the Negatives!

30 December 2009 9:23 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The title of this post is indefensible, exclamatory (!) and puerile. But these movies piss me off and if they can be super obnoxious, so can I. Now, in truth, I probably never see the absolute "worst" of the movies that play in theaters since I can pick and choose my own film menu. My New Year's Resolution is to be more constructive when I criticize (I'm not giving up criticism. That's mother's milk). I'd also like to be more positive in 2010.

Thus, I retract the titular command: No negatives of the following movies and performances should be incinerated ... instead let them live on as cautionary tales to actors and filmmakers. People are watching. Try harder.

Worst Supporting Actor

I've already expressed my concerned about the "too much!" of Stanley Tucci's continually nominated performance in The Lovely Bones. I don't know what the hell Richard Gere was doing in Amelia, »

Channing "Russell" Tatum

30 December 2009 3:30 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

This just in: Channing Tatum to star in a remake of Gladiator. "That movie is so old" a studio executive whined, "Time for a reboot!" The star suggested bringing sexy (shaved head) back but producers felt his skull wasn't shaped enough like Russell Crowe's so a pseudo caesar haircut would have to do!

Actually it's a still from Tatum's 2010 release The Eagle of the Ninth. I have no idea what it's about (I have no time to read... especially when there are pretty pictures to look at!) but like Ridley Scott's Robin Hood trailer it wants to remind you of Gladiator in a big big way. Are you not entertained ........ by the bald great-by-association ploy? More pictures including a strapping Jamie Bell here.

Jamie Bell danced into audiences' hearts in 2000's "Billy Elliot" and judging by the photo below, he is set to earn a whole new set of fans when "The Eagle of the Ninth" is released in 2010. Bell, now 23, plays Esca, the Celtic slave of Channing Tatum's Marcus in 140 Ad Roman-ruled Britain. And he takes his shirt off. New stills of the movie show Bell dirty and bare chested, but sadly there are no shirtless photos of Channing. In the 9 years since "Billy Elliot" Bell has had supporting roles in films like "Jumper," "Defiance" and "Flags of our Fathers." Jamie Now: Jamie Then: Channing Tatum: »

Yahoo! Movies has some newly released pictures from Kevin Macdonald’s upcoming The Eagle of the Ninth. In case you haven’t heard, the film stars Channing Tatum as 2nd century Roman soldier Marcus Aquila, who sets out to solve the mysterious disappearance of the Ninth Legion (which was commanded by his father) from Scotland some 20 years before and, in the process, to retrieve the legion’s lost emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth. The film co-stars Jamie Bell, Mark Strong, and Donald Sutherland. While there’s nothing terribly illuminating about the images in question, this bundle does feature a number of pics to add to your collection of Channing Tatum stills including such instant classics as “Channing on a horse,” “Channing on a rowboat,” and the ever-elusive “Channing conversing with Donald Sutherland.”

First Look: Channing Tatum in The Eagle of the Ninth

30 December 2009 9:20 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

We'll soon see dueling films about the Roman Ninth Legion, a semi-legendary force that disappeared or, more likely, was wiped out in or around the year Ad 117. Neil Marshall (Decent, Doomsday) has one film, called Centurion, which focuses on the force as it attempts to destroy the Picts. The other picture is The Eagle of the Ninth, based on the Rosemary Sutcliff novel of the same name. That one reunites The Last King of Scotland writer Jeremy Brock and director Kevin Macdonald. It stars Channing Tatum as Marcus Flavius Aquila, a young officer trying to discover the truth about his father's disappearance. The first pics are out now. Yahoo has the first images, which also briefly show Donald Sutherland and some of the other cast. In addition to Sutherland and Tatum, Mark Strong plays a primary role, and Jamie Bell, Denis O'Hare and Paul Ritter are in the mix as »

New Eagle Of The Ninth Images Look A Lot Like Gladiator

30 December 2009 7:17 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

I wasn't alive for the previous heyday of sword and sandals movies like Spartacus, so I really have to ask-- are they all the same, or do they all just look the same? In the decade following Gladiator, I haven't been able to look at a single movie featuring guys in sandals and togas without saying "Well, that looks exactly like Gladiator"-- and usually that judgment is pretty accurate too. Yes, I realize that that's how they dressed back then, and you can't make a Roman epic featuring guys in space helmets. But admit it-- most of these movies have the same plot about glory and revenge, and none of them are as awesome as Maximus shouting "Are you not entertained???" So is there any reason to expect something new and novel from Eagle of the Ninth, aside from the fact that it features the super-hunky Channing Tatum? I'm »

Eagle Of The Ninth Shots = Sword and Sandals and Channing Tatum

30 December 2009 5:02 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

It’s been hard, up until now, not to compare the careers (and acting styles, for the most part) of Channing Tatum and Sam Worthington.  They both broke onto the scene about the same time.  They both have that same amount of charisma (okay Worthington pushes ahead here and there).  They are both jettisoning themselves into any, big budget film role Hollywood has to offer.

However, looking at these new still of The Eagle Of The Ninth, the new medieval Roman actioner directed by The Last King Of Scotland helmer Kevin Macdonald, some comparisons to another actor may be in order.  Ladies and gentlemen, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies, I give you mid-Hulk transformation stills of Josh Hartnett (and one of Jamie Bell).

All kidding aside, this looks like it could either be truly epic or it could be another walk in the lazy, Roman park like what we have seen »
